Default .40 cal tactical question

Got a guy coming by today wanting to trade me a .40 caliber 3rd gen. Smith that is a tactical model. I don't know much about semis, liking the revolvers better. Are the models marked tactical worth more? I wish I had more info for you all, but this is all the guy could tell me. Any ideas on value? Are these desirable guns in general? I think he is valuing his gun around $400.

I'd say it really a run of the mill gun. Most have rails for mounting a light, which ruins the smooth lines of the 3rd gen for me. It's entirely possible that it is a LE trade in and he could have got it for less than $400.

I say it depends on condition and if you want it (or if you are a dealer, if you can mark it up enough).

There is a difference in the fitting of the slide on the TSW models. Accuracy is supposed to be enhanced. That's probably about the market value if in good condition.

TSW series is a step above the regular production pistol. Most but not all have the equipment rail that people either love or hate. The early models are marked with "TACTICAL" only and dont have all the upgrades. The latter will be marked with the caliber ahead of tactical. If it does not have a lot of holster wear $400 could be fair.

I own four various models. Two 4003's, a 5903 and a 4563. One of the 40's and both the nine and 45 have rails. I can live without the rails, but it didn't stop me from buying them. The fit and finish is better, IMO. The slide and frame are mated from the beginning to the end of the production line, insuring a superior fit. They have a loaded chamber indicator, night sights and are the last of the 3rd gens. Fully loaded, they weigh a bit more than a Glock. They are usually considered the best, save for the Performance Center variants. Do not hesitate to make the trade. You will enjoy it.

Thanks for the input. He is currently supposed to get back to me on a trade. We will see, but I think I will jump on this one. I need a carry gun.

When I finally switched from revolvers I purchased a 4013 TSW, no rails, and I loved that gun. I shot several thousand rounds through it without a hiccup. I finally had to sell it and I regret it to this day. I recently purchased a 4013 single stack and I like that better because I have small hands with short thick fingers. At four hundred I'd jump on it. Mine really liked the 135 grain Corbon and Hydra-Shoks.

Not a Pc model. Might be moot at this point, he is not calling me back. I hate it when they do that!
