5904 Stainless/alloy and 4006 join the stable UPDATE
I did a swap today which included a 5904. Initially I was told I was getting a 5903 but when I saw the gun it was stamped 5904. No problem, it was in great shape and with S&W having soooo many models, I thought nothing of it. So I look up 5904and I find it is a blued version of the 5903. This gun is not blued. It has a dull SS slide and "silver" alloy frame. Identical in looks to the "03". Is this some "special" version S&W built? I could be hallucinating but I know I saw "5904" stamped on the frame. I also got a 4006 in trade. Its a non issued Alaska State Patrol gun with logos intact albeit very faint. Both are in great shape and I can't wait to pick them up.
UPDATE
So here they are. I am very pleased with both. The "04" has a crazy short reset with the "06" not far behind. Both triggers are smooth and break nicely. Both are super clean in and out. The tritium is burned out on the 4006. The "06" has a decocker only, not a safety. Maybe because it was a LE gun, not sure. I am going to change to "06" grips to the factory plastics because I am not a fan of what the wear now.

The frame could have been refinished and someone install a stainless slide. Hopefully they didn't just strip the frame. A call to S&W with the serial number will tell you how it left the factory, but yes a 5904 is a blued carbon slide/blue alloy gun.

Definitely. I looked at it fairly close and it does not seem like a refinish. I bought it from a LEO that bought it from another LEO that supposedly bought it new. Thanks to the CA waiting period it won't be until after the first for pics.

Mine was blue on blue, as it came from the factory...
I recall some guys thought that stripping blue from the alloy frame looked "cool", and I assume someone did this to your pistol.
Mine was a great combat/duty type pistol - I carried it for several years to ride to work through som bad parts of town. I NEVER had any problems with it at all-it's on my all time most reliable autos list.
I got the straight back grip from Smith for it - felt better to me.

3rd generation frames stamped with the wrong model number is not unheard of, but not common either. The original box would be interesting. Post detailed and sharp photos when you can.

Well, very nice sir. I can't tell you about the "silver" 5904 but it does catch one's eye. Did you get the factory box/case with it, the end-label would be interesting to see.
The 4006 is also very eye-catching with the front slide serrations.
Thank you for the pictures sir.

No box or other papers unfortunately. I may contact S&W for more info just for fun.
Are the front serrations not normal on the 4006?

I believe that front serrations are usually reserved for Performance Center guns however it's possible they're available for special orders such as department specific items.
Someone who knows more about the subject should be along soon...paging handgunner356.

Could you please take and show pics of the Alaska State Trooper logo on the one? I have been looking for one and would like to know what to look for. Thanks.

Both are unique looking pistols. Can you post a photo of the reverse side please?

I recall reading or hearing that the ADPS 4006 models were worked by the Performance Center before being shipped. It is not a true PC pistol but has some features, such as the front serrations.
All of the ADPS 4006s I've seen have a condition where the slide sits slightly forward on the frame. I don't know if this is a defect that affects performance or if it is just cosmetic. I'm sure someone here knows the answer to that.
Be sure to let us know how they shoot.

All my info is from the seller, a LEO that purchased it unfired from another source, so I have no idea on its configuration from S&W. It is very smooth in every way from slide to trigger etc. It is much smoother than the 5904 so I would guess there has been some type of "tuning" done to it. Unfortunately I have had no time to shoot either but hope to soon. I must say the 06 seems to be desireable as I have had three offers to buy it here on this forum alone. Nice to know I got a good one

They can pretty much get what ever they want on LE orders, but the forward serrations are uncommon. The Alaska guns were the only 4006s' I've ever seen with them, the decocker only is also unusual on those guns. Pretty much the same features the PC put on the 5906 IDPA guns.
