I find my 4516-1 more pleasant to fire than any of the short barrel 1911 .45s because the heavier S&W slide runs slower. Its precieved recoil is the same as a 5" auto. Also short barrel 1911 .45s tend to have reliability issues while my 4516-1 is has been close to 100% reliable for 20 years. Newer plastic guns are lighter to carry but consequently harder to shoot well.

4516 no dashes had minor problems that were corrected fairly quickly in the 4516-1. 4516-1s had 2 ounce heavier slides. All the 4516-1s that I've seen had forged parts. I have not seen a 4516-2 and the -2 may have been a change to MIM parts. Someone with a 4516-2 or their SCSW handy hopefully will post what dash 2 signified.

4516-1 mags were lazer etched "not for use in 4516". No dash and dash 1 mags had yellow followers until they were replaced by the current black follower mags that are intended for all guns. My dash 1 is reliable with all vintages of factory mags. New mags are expensive and I have found more used ones than I can use over the years so if you enjoy poking around at shows and shops it may be worth putting off buying mags until you find used ones.

Best regards,

Gil

TCS dates to 88-89 well before MIM parts and should be a 4516 no dash. These use two recoil springs, a inner and a outer, about the only other grips around are the Houge, I perfer the factory myself. On your mag search be aware that the 457 uses the same mag. Also 4506 8 round mags will work they just stick out below the grip.

The 4516 is a great compact 45. I have a 4516-2 and it still doesn't have mim parts (if such things worry you). The hammer and trigger are, however, blued instead of flash chromed like the hammer and trigger should be on your 4516 no dash. I have only had mine for around 6 months now, but haven't had any issues with it in that time. I do like the hogue grips on mine, over the factory grips, but just give them a try to see which ones fit your hands best. Magazines can be found at most various gun parts websites but a few would be midwayusa, cdnn, bud's gun shop, cheaper then dirt, etc.
Enjoy your 4516.

What kind of problems does the 4516 have? Is it something S&W will fix? or Did some of them work fine?

I have a 4516-1 and functionally it has been rock solid, a real "Mini Me" of my full size 4506-1.

My only gripe is with the shape of the rear of the grip, I wish that it extended down just a bit farther behind the magazine to be even with the bottom of that extention, and lend your hand more support.

With the front of the mag extention providing a place for your little finger to grasp, I find the lack of support for the bottom of my palm feels a bit awkward.

I did an experiment and put the 4516-1 top end on my 4506-1 and that was a sweet package. An 8 round mag with a barrel that's shorter than a 4566.

The only 4516 problems I ever heard of were with the original no dash models. There were slide inertia issues and a magazine problem, IIRC.

The 4516-1 cured those issues. I've run across a very few late production 4516-2's with MIM hammers and triggers.

My LEO overun 4516-3 has a MIM hammer and trigger, and HAD a MIM mag catch. When the MIM mag catch fractured like the cheap pot metal it was, during an IDPA match, I replaced it with a steel assembly.

With over 4000 rounds through the 4516-3 I can count the failures to function on one hand. Two were ammo related, one the mag catch failure, and one a magazine issue.

I tried all the popular compact 45's before deciding on the 4516, including the Kimber offerings, Colt Defender, Glock, Sig P245 and others. I've yet to regret my decision. Regards 18DAI.

I've owned three 4516 no dashes. None ever ever gave me a single problem regardless of what color mag follower I used.

Nice weapon.

I bought my 4516 no dash NIB in November, 1989, TCP18xx. (SCS&W III says introduction was 1990, but they were out a bit before that.) I and other deputies shot it a good bit back then, as our department was transitioning to semiautos from revolvers and we could choose to buy our own from a fairly wide list of choices, and lots of folks wanted to try it out. It worked quite well with every cartridge variant we tried.

The only stoppage I experienced or witnessed was when one of the guys loaded the mag with .40 S&W cartridges, chambered and fired one and it failed to cycle. Imagine that!

I never carried mine for serious. One of my partners bought one about a year after mine and carried it both plainclothes and uniform until 1999, when I sold him a much lighter .45 Chiefs Special.

Good, solid pistols.
