Default Recoil spring for 4516-1

I've read somewhere recently that you can't get recoil springs for the 4516-1 anymore from S&W-only from Wolffe and maybe another source or two. Maybe it was somewhere on this forum...can't recall.

I've been able to get recoil and mag springs for the 4506, 4566 and 457 without any problem and wondered why this one was so special it's no longer available. Maybe there's a difference between the 4516 and 4516-1 with recoil springs, I'm not that familiar with the zillion model numbers .

No problem-just figured since S&W had every other spring it was odd they didn't have this one.

Is it a single spring or double spring? Wolff does not have the double spring type and they can only be had from S&W. The single type from Wolff work great.

S&W went to the double spring setup on both the compact 45 and single stack 40s' based on the same frame. They did do a upgrade on guns sent in for FTF/FTE issues and put the double spring set up in them. I don't know why they would have dropped the single spring from inventory but they have. The double spring setup isn't a drop in, it requires a bushing to be installed in the slide for the smaller recoil rod. It seems it would make sense to keep the single spring available for people who weren't having any problems with their guns and just want a replacement.

I don't have one...just looking at a prospective one and wondered about the spring. I don't know if all -1 4516's had a problem or not and that's why they changed from one spring to a dual setup. If I ever purchase one and it has the single spring, I'll just order one from Wolffe until I see any problems develop. I can't image why this particular model would have anymore trouble than another one, however, with the one spring setup. Nevertheless, if problems exist, I see no reason why not to send it to S&W for the dual spring setup.
