Default Help! How do I put this back together?

I just bought a used S&W 910 today. Took it apart to clean, and I can't seem to reassemble it.

I've got the barrel, recoil spring, and guide rod back in the slide. I put the slide back on the frame (pushing down three pins in the back of the frame that stick up), but it won't move far emough back to re-insert the slide stop. No mater how much force I use, the slide won't move back from a normal "in battery" position.

I've tried following this video, but I'm stuck at 1:56. The pins are down, but the slide won't move any farther back than this:

Any suggestions?

Serial number is VCU2### if that matters.

EDIT: With the slide back on the frame (as in the picture above), I can't rotate the safety/decocker onto the "safe" position. If the slide is not on the frame, the safety rotates normally.

That doesn't seem to make a difference.

The gun didn't come with a manual, but I'm going through the manual for my S&W 908 (which never gave me this kind of trouble) and not finding much.

I can partially insert the slide release, but it doesn't go all the way in and I don't want to try forcing it.

Try checking the position of the recoil spring guide rod if the plunger on the rod hasnt slipped into the hole in the frame may be causing you problems.

Ok, I may be getting somewhere.

I tried re-assembling w/o the recoil spring, and it went on. It got caught for a second in the same place as above, but then slide back (quickly!) when I put a little force on it.

Is there anything obviously wrong with this picture?

It looks like the previous owner actually polished the outside of the barrel. Most of the barrel (except for areas I'd expect to see wear on) has almost a mirror shine.

Would it make sense to just replace the whole recoil spring and guide rod?

EDIT: One more picture.

It looks like the guide rod is lined up in the slide, at least to me.

I've got to go to work in about 2 hours, I'm going to take a nap and look at this again in the morning.

Watch this video on take down of the 4506. It's not much if any different than yours. Sometimes you have to take a small screwdriver and gently push that one particular arm down as some seem to be especially aggravating to push down with the thumb nail. I have one like that. Just a gently push is all that's needed if your fingernail won't work. That smallest arm(or pin) is not going down all the way. I have had trouble with my 4506 occasionally with it.

Watch especially from about 3:00 on through the end of the video. It's a good video but a bit out of sink or slow with the video speed.

Thanks. I'm watching it now.

I don't think it's those pins/arms near the hammer. I've already got to push them down to put the slide on as far as I'm getting; I just can't get it to move back beyond normal "at rest" (slide forward) position.

Iram, is the slide locking lever going in all the way? I just stripped my neighbor's 6906 and I could only get it to go all the way in after lining it up with the slide notch. This notch servers to purposes. First, the locking lever slides into it to lock the slide back and second it allows you to remove or install the locking lever.

Also, the recoil spring notch is the really small half moon cutout on the barrel. It's so small that I didn't believe it would hold the tension but it does.

Take your time you will figure this out.

Let us know your progress.

Ok did you see the guy struggle with the 3rd lever when he was putting on the slide? Maybe that's the problem.

Keep at it....

Turn the guide rod and recoil spring end for end. The small end goes through the hole in the front of the slide and the large end seats in the notch in front of the chamber housing.

Scooter, that seems logical but in this case the small end of the guide rod goes in the direction of the barrel notch.

There's something else going on here.... Thanks for the input though.

Here's a link for disasembly.

No, the lever won't go all the way in. I can't move the slide back far enough.

I've got the recoil spring/guide in the same direction that I use it on my S&W 908, so I don't think it's the direction.

Not to mention, I don't think I could physically get the recoil spring/guide rod installed in the slide backwards.

Ok, I just came dangerously close to sending my guide rod flying through the screen on a $2k laptop. I think it's time to take a break from this problem.

Do any of you think a new recoil spring or guide rod would solve the problem?

I tried removing the recoil spring, and I was able to re-assemble the pistol (had to hold it upside down to keep it all in place though). Obviously this isn't a solution, just a data point.

Yeah, I think I even referenced it in the first post.

Basically I've done everything in the video, except at 1:56 my slide doesn't go all the way back. I do have all of the stupid little pins pushed down.

you near Victoria Texas?

make sure your recoil spring assembly is centered on the barrel and slide.

make sure your barrel feed ramp is centered.

tolerances can make them off square and make contact with the frame.

I wish I was near Victoria, TX. I'm stuck up in the frozen north (MA).

Would the previous owner actually polishing the barrel be a potential problem with the tolerance? The barrel doesn't have a matte finish like the barrel on my 908; the 910 barrel has a near-mirror shine on most of it.

if you took off the recoil spring and it went on without it, then thats your culprit.

probably has some plastic slag on it or the plastic part is being a bear.

lay your slide on its sights.

looking straight down at it, make sure the barrel feed ramp is eyeball centered with the edges of the slide.

also make sure your recoil spring assembly is centered with the barrel.

slide on your frame and with one continuous motion, see if it goes full to the rear.

good luck

look at the marks on the plastic round flat. That is likely the hangup. make sure that part fits in the frame.

you may have to dress that with a file or sharp knife if it does not fit in the relief area in the frame.

I have had the same hangup occur on several different S&W pistols. It always requires a reset of the recoil spring guide rod to get the slide to fit.
I would check each part by placing in the frame separately to see how the parts normally fit. Look for burrs or hangup areas.

Sometimes when this hangup happens I just bump the slide and it goes back. That is usually after I reset the spring and barrel first.

You'll get past this problem eventually.

Sounds about right. It does happen on occasion. Good luck.

another area to look at.

look how the recoil spring is out of line with the black plastic round flat. make sure its square just in case that might be the hangup

I think I'm just going to have to call S&W on Monday for a repair. Kind of sucks since I'm sure it will take a month or so and will probably cost more than I spent on this thing.

I tried completely removing the barrel, recoil spring, and recoil spring guide. I re-assembled and it still wouldn't go. I'm thinking that the one time it "worked" with the recoil spring removed may have just been a fluke.

Would removing the grips reduce tension anywhere that might help with re-assembly?

My advice at this point would be to take it to a local gun shop and have them check and reassemble the gun. Be sure to have them show you how a couple of times. Then next time it will be easy.
Good luck
Bruce

BTW did you check the spring overhang as pointed out by SW CQB 45?
Just rotate the spring until it is not above the flange.

I think I found it.

I suspect this spring isn't supposed to be bent like this:

If it's a busted spring, at least I don't have to feel like a complete moron. I'm doing some detailed cleaning of the parts in the frame before puting it back together. Hopefully it's just that spring (which seems to fit fine when turned upside down...

That would do it... .

Good troubleshooting...I hope you get the new one real soon. Also let us know if it works or not. I'm sure it will.

Ok, it's back together and working. I switched the springs (right one on the left, left one on the right) and turned the damaged spring upside down. Looks like it's all working, but I want to replace the springs anyways. Anyone know where I can buy a replacement for them?

After this experience, I'm thinking I may want to have a COMPLETE spare set of springs just laying around in case of future problems.

Also, can anyone tell me what the grey piece with the '0' stamped on it is in this picture? It was a PITA to put back in, I'm just curious what it actually does.

Thanks for all your help.

Default part

The part is called the sear. It retains the hammer in the cocked position.

Brownell's has your springs. I would order a complete set and replace the firing pin spring and recoil spring.

Schematic for Smith & WessonŽ 910 R3 - World's Largest Supplier of Firearm Accessories, Gun Parts and Gunsmithing Tools

Try Midway for recoil springs as I don't see them listed at Brownell's

Boy...don't it give you a good feeling when you find the cause of a problem? It does it for me especially when I have been stumped for a while. Glad you found your problem.

Yeah, it feels good to find the solution. Odds are my neighbors are wondering why someone yelled "YES! THAT'S <bleep>ING IT!" at the top of their lungs first thing this morning...

It sure shoots nice.
