My local gun shop had one which was priced at 995.00 for quite a few months. They finally lowered it to 795.00 and it sold within a couple of weeks. I thought about it but didn't want to add another caliber to what I already have,

750 to 1,000 but it would be nice to know how much he has in it. I bought my first PC auto almost NIB for less than 500.

Most that I see sold quickly at $750, so anything less I would consider a bargin. Excellant gun that retailed around $1500 when new.

I'll give you a legitimate price to deal with. I have a Shorty Forty Mk3 in the black finish that is in very good condition and is dead on accurate. Night sights and the original adjustable sights with box, manual and three magazines. The price is $625 plus shipping. You can buy it or use this to negotiate with your seller.

If you have never shot a Performance Center pistol, you are in for a real treat.

I saw this FS too. The guy wants 575 which seems pretty darn good considering what has been posted here. Wish I had the coin.

You can't go wrong with these pistols, this was the original compact 40. Production started in late '93. This one has the highest serial number that I have seen, some 1500 of these were made in the 1st generation, so this would be one of the last.

I paid $750 for mine slightly used back in '95, I also purchased my 2nd generation new in '95 for $900. I won't part with either of these pistols, the 1st generation is the only one that I shoot. Its by far the most accurate 3rd gen pistol I own.

Get it while you can, they won't make any more of them.

Cheers,
Sam

They did 3 runs of 500 SN# PCS0001-PCS0500-1992, PCS0501-PCS1000-1993, PCS1001-PCS1500-1995. I purchased PCS0573 +PCS0574 for my wife and I, NIB, from Lew Horton in 3/1993. They also made a Shorty Forty MKIII with a SN# prefix of PCW0000 in 1995 and 1997. All are very nice. I would like to find one of the black SS guns. Good Luck

I just stumbled into this S&W site. Interesting to catch up on the shorty forty's. I bought a shorty forty from Lew Horton in 1994, I think, it's # 102. It's a great pistol, hasn't been shot very much. Is anyone aware of a laser sight that would fit? I currently use a Kahr, P40 with a crimson trace laser.....works just fine.

I had one of the first Shorty's. I bought it used about 2 years old for $500. Sadly, it was a huge disappointment. It never really was reliable, even after S&W worked on it, unlike a friend's, which was great out of the box. My Astra A-75 I bought about the same time was just about perfect, for less than half the price. I'm looking for another Shorty now, and hopefully I won't get burned again. In the meantime, I bought another A-75, and it's as great as the first one was.

Would you describe that Shorty you sold in Ohio? I just bought one in Ohio and was trying to get a little more info on it. What problems were you having?

Ben

Viperpd....I saw your email showing serial number ranges for shorty 40s. Thanks for posting the info. I have a shorty 40 I bought from Horton's in 1994. The prefix on my pistol is SPC. I see that the prefix's you posted don't start with an S. Any thoughts on why this pistol starts with S?....Mike

Default my 2 cents

I think the production number is not exactly true, because I have one with the 1st gen grooves on the grip, but it's higher than PCS1500.

So, they made more than 3x500 of these "very rare" gems. Maybe that's why it's the only gun I have that one can buy on Gunbroker for 30%+ less than it originally cost from Lew Horton 18 years ago.

(This one was also a lemon. Had to be sent back to PC twice before it finally stopped jamming.
Even though these supposedly have some kind of an improved trigger, it always felt way too long and uncomfortable on DA, and sloppy with a lot of play on SA.

As for "dead-on" accuracy, my USMC (ret.) shooting instructor can hit the edge of a playing card with his Goldcup, but not with my Shorty 40.

Anyhow, of the guns I have this one turned out to be the worst investment, but I'll keep it for sentimental reasons, and because it's "so rare", "accurate", hand-fitted, "holy-grailest" and retains its value so well until one actually goes to sell it... )
