Default New .380 Bodyguard

My wife and I have been avoiding .380 guns because, at least around here, the ammo hasn't been easy to find in the usual places (Wallyworld, primarily). But over the last few months, we've been seeing it there on a regular basis and since I've been wanting something to carry that is very easy to conceal, we decided to bite the bullet and get a couple .380s.

She got a Ruger LCP that we both really like. My plan was to carry it myself now and then to see if I like it. Well, I do, and today I went looking for one for myself.

The people at my usual source actually had one in the store but it wasn't "in their computer yet". Worse, they didn't seem to be anxious to get the process moving while I waited, so they lost a sale.

I went down the street to another store and while they had the LCP in the case, it was $50 more than the first place. That's when the salesman showed me the S&W Bodyguard.

Didn't take long for the gun to sell itself.

I'm not a gun snob, and I'm not loyal to any one particular brand over the others. I have quite a few of each of the major brands. But this is really a sweet little piece. Small enough to fit in the pocket of my jeans, DAO makes it pretty safe to carry, and of course the built-in laser is a big plus.

So far, only 18 rounds through it but it didn't miss a beat. I put a mix of ball ammo and Golden Sabre hollowpoints and it didn't seem to mind either kind. This weekend, I hope to shoot a hundred rounds or so through it to help break it in.

I understand that the Bodyguard is pretty new on the market. Any comments, problems, suggestions or anything else I should know?

Thanks in advance,

Dan

I've read a bit on the web (reliability unknown) and they can be ammo sensitve. Your plan sounds like a good one re: 100 + rounds to break it in. I would not carry it until you've found a round it likes and cycles w/o fail. Congrats on your purchase.

It appears you missed all of the threads with the problems arising with the Bodyguard 380. I suggest you complete a search on Bodyguard 380 to find the threads. Basically the main problem has been with the slide release/takedown lever coming out after so many shots. It looks like S&W has come up with a solution which involves swapping out the faulty frame with a new improved frame. It is necessary to send the pistol to S&W on their dime to get this fix. Hopefully you won't have this problem with yours. Just telling you to be aware of it. Several other problems also occurred which you can find thru a search. Good luck.

Yeah, I did a little digging and found those threads. Mine's EAB25XX with the raised ring around the laser buttons.

If the takedown pin gives me trouble, it goes back to SW and I fully expect them to make it right. I've had other guns with teething problems and the manufacturers have always made good on their promise.

Mostly, what I'm looking for is things like broken firing pins after 10 rounds, magazines that don't feed out of the box, slide cracks, and the like. Things that have plagued other guns and just might cause the gun to go "click" instead of "bang" when it's called on.

Your EABXXXX should be just fine... it's like a "-1" on this model. Most of the problems with the take down lever were on the EAAXXXX models and S&W seems to have this problem well under control now. I had problems with my EAA model and had to send it back to the shop twice. Both times S&W was very efficient and timely in solving my problems so you can certainly depend on them. Have fun and keep your powder dry.
