Default Odd serial number 52-2

Hi, one of my 52-2 pistols has what seems to me a odd serial number.

It is TCMO 497

Does any one know of any special significance to this type of serial number ?
My other ones have a number with less letters and more numbers , more like all my revolvers have.

Thanks

Chris

Default 52-2 Serial number

Chad,

I looked again, it really seems that it is a letter o not a zero but I am not sure how to tell. I looked at one of the others, it has a number of
A485896 just as I have typed it, the others appears as TCMO 497
actually , not with a full space as I have typed, but not right together
as the second one is stamped.
I suppose it is just the difference between two stampings, actually one appears more "perfect" the other is as though the letters were individually stamped and are all a bit "crooked" or something , just very different
stampings I guess.

Autoloaders had the "A" prefix from 1970 to around 1984, when the three letter prefix started. I'd guess your 52-2 is from the mid to late 1980's.

I would guesstimate that TCM0497 is from around 1989. As others have all ready stated, the A prefix serial numbers stopped in 1984 and were replaced with a (3 ALPHA / 4 NUMERIC) system. The books show TCB4082 as 1988 and TEP-TFA beginning in April of 1990. Your guns number falls in between so should be 89 or early 90.

If you want the exact date, you can call S&W and either CS will give it to you or you can ask for the Historian and he will.

Please post a photo of the serial number if you can and that will make it easier to verify that it is in fact 0497.

My 52-2 # is TAN6195 that I bought in 1985 or 1986. Jeff
