Default Spurred hammer on a 3913 TSW

I'm may be buying a 3913TSW but I would like to replace the semi bobbed hammer with a spurred hammer. Anyone know which model# hammer works?

Also, is this the way a semi bobbed hammer looks? I can't see a hammer at all.

Default bobbed, semi-bobbed, shaved?

UCLA Law,
You may want to research this section of the Forum, as I believe this has been a recent item of discussion. I believe the answer is "yes" - you can replace the hammer with a different part number. 3914/3913, 6904/6906 pistols, along with the other compact versions have this semi-bobbed hammer arrangement for a reason. It promotes access to the pistol when concealed. Even though these pistols have serrations on the hammer, the DA mode makes thumbing unnecessary, as does the decocking lever. As one who still has a couple of SA 1911's I can understand the emotional "need" of a conventional hammer. But the reality is, from a practical standpoint, you'll be just fine....

You got that right. I need a hammer. But which one? I searched for an hour but no one ever says which hammer worked!

Default Hammer possibilities?

UCLALaw,
What I read some time ago stopped short of part numbers, but suggested that Midway might have the parts, if S&W didn't. I just bought a 3906, which is a standard size, WITH a hammer and it appears that it would fit my 6906, if I wanted to move in that direction. You might also want to pose your question in the gunsmithing section of the Forum.
So, my "guess" is that MOD 39, 59 series and their off-spring might be "donors" for your project. I'm hoping someone, who has actually done this, will chime in.
Rgds,

kbm: Yes S&W will, but it is a really easy job. Why don't you get a detailed dis-assembly/assembly printout and do it yourself? Get the hammer from Brownell's. Their product no. is: 940-000-341; Hammer, Blued. Their listing does not say specifically this hammer will fit your 6906, but it will. I just changed my bobbed original hammer on my 3913 with an eared hammer marked "5906". ......... Big Cholla

From the S&W smithing section of this forum....
Brownell's (not Midway - though they might)

Hope this helps,
XAVMECH

Rgds,
XAVMECH
I put a 645 hammer into a 4516 and wouldn't change it back, but that doesn't make me an expert. Generally all you need to do is use the correct length strut which can be removed from the 3913TSW's existing hammer. The hammers are not different for different size guns or different calibers but older forged hammers and triggers may be slightly different than the 3913TSW's MIM parts. I think they will interchange but that's a question for the gunsmithing forum. You can get parts numbers from the parts lists on S&W's website or call them.

The desire for a hammer spur is not just an emotional need. A hammer spur makes a carefully aimed SA first shot faster and cocking for one safer. They are usually left off because employers do not trust their employees with cocked guns. I notice that hammer spurs' supposed obstruction to drawing is a very selectively made claim. The same people who make that claim about DA autos have no problem with the hammer spurs on their SA autos.

It's customary on this forum to type JMHO about now, but really, who else is typing?

Best Regards,
Gil

Default Emotional needs..

I should add here that I have no problems carrying my Kimber Ultra Carry (with its exposed hammer) as my CCW. When I'm lucky enough to find a good, used 3913 I face the same issue as UCLALaw, I suppose. I do agree about having the option to do that first round SA, by having a conventional hammer at the ready.

Does replacing the hammer have any effect on the value of the pistol?

Yes. Presuming 4516s ever attain collector status, when my time comes, I'll be laying in my coffin wearing a 4516-1 with reduced collector value. Of course grave robbers could always drop the original hammer back in. It's in the box.

Best Regards,
Gil

Myself, my family and all my clan are offended by that remark.

I've always trained for the first shot DA with my 3913. The transition from DA to SA not ever having been an issue, for me.

I liked the spurless hammer because it is easier on my suit coat liners. In fact, I've had my 4566 carry guns converted to spurless hammer since I carry them off duty in the winter.

Different strokes and all that I suppose. You should go with the spurred hammer if that is what works best for you. Regards 18DAI.

I recently bought a 457 with a bobbed hammer. I really didn't care for the bobbed hammer, so my gunsmith fitted an old (has the tooling hole in the spur) M59/39 hammer to it. Considering that this gun has the "tang" on the frame, I don't think the spur hammer will degrade its carry/concealability.

Don't confuse my ramblings with advise on how to do your job. I always use the DA on traditional DAs at matches but I got a coyote with my 4516-1 once and I my guess is you'd have cocked for that shot as well.

I've enjoyed your expert posts on 3rd gen. autos.

Gil

I'd have used my 4" model 66 on that yote. I'd have probably cocked it too. Best regards 18DAI.

Found out it takes a model 5906TSW or 5906 non TSW spurred hammer.

Since there is no real winter (or real concealed carry) in CA it's a moot point.
