5900 grip, woodgrain plastic?

Was in my local shop today and he had a 5906 with what looked to be factory S&W Delrin grips but they were brown. Closer inspection revealed they were Delrin with a wood grain finish. Anyone else seen these? Are they factory? I want one.

I believe they are factory, have only seen them in online pics, and believe they may have been an option for PC guns--but I could be wrong.

Yes, they are factory.

They were limited to a stocking dealer special 5906, which IIRC had a high polish finish on it. Regards 18DAI.

I had the pleasure of working for S&W stocking dealers from 1988 until about 1996. I have never seen the grips you described, but then again, our corporate buyers did not always order the coolest stuff, either. I did sell quite a few S&W 3rd Gen autos in that time, however. I think those grips would look good on a black 5904 frame with either a blued or stainless slide.

S&W 5906 SE "Special Edition". The woodgrain look is a thin sticky sheet over standard grips. I still have mine that I bought new in 1993 or so, used it as a LEO duty gun for a while, and you can tell about the grips from wear and tear.

After seeing these I'm thinking about picking up an extra set and have them hydroprinted.

those are sweet looking! Recently someone had a set of actual wood grips on the trader...wish I could have gotten them.

FYI, the one I saw is now listed on Gun's America. Odd price though.

Hogue makes some very nice 59x series grips out of Rosewood, Cocobolo, etc., both smooth and checkered if you want another option. They hold up really well and of course can always be refinished.

Of course these double stack guns are already pretty beefy for CCW so this adds a little more width to the grip, but makes for a very nice shooting firearm.

I've been real tempted to get a set of the Hogue wood grips for my 6906...it's in good enough shape that I think it would look good, although I'll admit I like wood grips better on blued guns.
