Only occasionally, usually it's a Glock 17 with TLR-1. As soon as Safariland sends the holster backordered from Streicher's, the Glock is going to be replaced with a 9mm 226R DAK with TLR-1. This one will likely still come out on occasion though. I'm a bit off-topic but you didn't specify granted I suppose it should be clear since we're in the "Auto" section .

I usually carry the 1911 9mm Pro Series, occasionally carry the 586 L-Comp.
My BUG is a custom 9mm 360J.
Off duty is a 9mm Fusion 1911 CCO.

I don't work uniformed patrol anymore, but here's what I use when I work saturation details. I carry a 4506 in the duty holster, a 442 on my ankle, and have a 4516-1 inside the car with me as well. My normal job is a detective, so I use the 4506 and the 442. The 1006 with adjustable sights is what I've been carrying in drop down safariland holster with heavy vest armor for call-outs.

I'm glad there are more like me out there. I'm the last of 3500 still carrying a S&W 3rd gen. on duty... I keep a 10.5" Colt Commando in the trunk, but in my personal opinion, nothing gets compliance better than a large frame S&W Auto and a shorty shotgun. It's too bad really that there aren't more S&W steel framed pistols in use with law enforcement. I had a recruit shoot my 4506 and complain it was too heavy and only held eight rounds. When I told him to get stronger and not miss the target he filed a complaint....such are the young recruits of today.

That's because when it comes to the current generation nothing is ever their fault or their responsibility. If it isn't a moderate weight DAO (read as: safe action) with no safety levers and a short/light trigger pull then they can't shoot it. I have been debating adding about 5-6 different style autos to the firearms training program and making it mandatory to pass a "manual of arms" course. Ever see a rookie try and check the chamber on a gun recovered in a search? Or make it safe? Like monkey (you know what-ing) a football.

Maybe you should put a revolver in there too. I had an OIT who just couldn't remember to push forward to release the cylinder on S&W, pull for Colt and press in for Ruger.... I just don't get it. Of those that carry backup guns, most are Glocks. There are a few of us that carry J-Frames, but even some are afraid of the qualification. AZPOST rules for qualification involving J-Frames still require 6 rounds at 25 yards, empty gun reloads and tactical reloads, and with a J-Frame you have to think it through....and thinking scares a lot of guys.

Although I carry three different guns for four different seasons; 5906TSW for summer, 4046TSW in the fall and spring and a 4583TSW in the winter, I am well armed besides those three. I carry a Ruger SP101 in .357 on my ankle and when I'm wearing a jacket I carry a 4053TSW in a shoulder holster. That doesn't include my RRA M4 and my Remington 1187 Police. When I worked for the County I was issued a glock but it blew up in my face and broke 17 out of the 27bones in my hand. You are correct in that todays policing it seems everyone wants to be lazy and do things the easy way especially when it comes to firearms. I'm thankful in that my Chief lets us carry what we want. And let me guess, the majority of the other officers in your department carry glocks with, lets say, SIG and HK running a close second and third?

If it were my choice I would. VA requires it's Federal Police to carry the Beretta 9mm. Soon changing to a Sig 9mm.

Leiden,

What an excellent set up you have. Did you install the spurred hammer on the 4516?

Was that target at 100 yards?

I'm not a cop but carried this one for maybe 3 days as a "rent a cop" along with a few other wheelguns, until the temp job I was working ran it's course.....I was about to buy an M&P 9mm but the need for it went away.......

Actually, I think we're running close to 75% Glock, and the second most common pistol is a Colt/Kimber/Springfield 1911. There are very few SIGs and a few HKs around. I'm the armorer for Colt, SIG, HK, Beretta and Glock, and by far Glock 31s are the most popular. We authorized revolvers and there are a few of those around too.

Yes, I put a spurred hammer on the 4516-1 and it's the perfect combination. I think of it as a "mini-4506" and wouldn't trade it for anything. I'd recommend adding the spurred hammer if for no other reason than it just plain looks right. I'll take a better photo of it tomorrow and send you one.

I need to get a better camera, but here's my favorite "carry pistol" for work - a 4516-1 with a spurred hammer. I carry it in a SIG P229 holster and can even use my duty 4506 magazines for reloads. I love the 4516-1 and it just feels right.....it's not plastic and just plain catches your attention at night when it's pointed at the bad guy. I think if it as a mini-4506. I just wish it came in 10mm.

Very cool weapon Leiden. I've owned three 4516's over the years and they're great, underrated guns. I've really thought about buying a 10mm barrel blank and making a barrel for the -16. Never have done it though.

This is what I carry every day:

In my world it's the only thing better than the -16. Hard to find though, and not cheap. Man, does it shoot.

Unfortunately I carry a "full" size M&P 45. My agency has had nothing but issues with it. We were previously issued the 4566 which I wish we would go back to.

I carried a 659 while I was Deputy Sheriff. I don't have a pic since I traded it for a tranmission for a 67 Chevelle SS several years ago.

Retired now, but I didn't carry anything BUT Smiths my entire LE career (except I did carry a Colt, actually a Springfield, when I was an MP in the early '70's). They included in order:

Model 19, Model 29, Model 66, Model 60 (court gun), Models 469, 645, 4516, 4566, and currently Model CS45. I also carried a short barreled S&W Model 3000 12 gauge shotgun which functioned identical to a Remington Model 870.

All were great firearms, none ever let me down.

My first duty weapon was 681. 7 years later we went to the Sigma .40 cal and 10 years later we went to a Glock 23. Thats what I have now. The 681 was the best shooter with the Glock being a distant third. I still carry the Sigma off duty and the 681 is my hog gun and hopefully deer gun next year.

Wow -- joined the police department in 1970, and my first Duty weapon was a S&W Model 19 Combat Magnum. I carried it for years, until I broke down and bought the Model 66 (Combat Magnum in Stainless Steel). I carried a Chief Special for plainclothes assignments. One day I got a "wild hair" and bought a Colt Python -- shot it one time, and sold it to another officer on my platoon -- I didnt like it -- it just didnt feel right to me. I took the money from the Python and bought a Bodyguard to carry off duty, along with a Mauser HSC in 9mm kurz. I used those two off duty guns for off duty carry until I retired.

When semi-autos were approved, I bought a S&W model 59 and carried it for a short time, sold it and bought two (2) S&W Sigma 40v's. One, I carried constantly -- the other was identical to the first -- and I kept it in the safe except when the "constant carry" Sigma was in the "shop" for a new sight, or adjustment, or any number of little "piddly" things that are needed over time.

I carried the two Sigmas until I retired, never having one single bit of trouble with either of them. I found out with experience that spending a fortune on a duty weapon was fine if you wanted to watch a lot of money slowly deteriorate with on duty carry. The Sigmas were relatively inexpensive, but were more than adequate for on duty carry, with all the backing of Smith and Wesson. For the money they were (and in MY opinion still are) -- the best deal on the market -- and best deal for DUTY SERVICE if you are required to purchase your own service weapon.

All in all, they were the very best weapon I could have chosen, and if I had to choose again --- I would go with Sigma's with no hesitation.

Started this line of work in 2006.... Started off with a Gen 2 GLOCK 17 in the academy and FTO, jumped to a Gen 3 GLOCK 22 and carried a S&W 642 (I removed the cursed lock) as a BUG. Left that agency and went to another and carried the GLOCK 37 in .45 GAP. Left them and went back to my first agency and I'm carrying a GLOCK 22 again....

I'm a 2nd Gen Cop.... my father has been carrying one model of a S&W revolver or another since 1975 and he switched to GLOCK in the early 1980s. He brought GLOCK down to South Florida and has never looked back. He's still a S&W fan as am I. Even though both of use currently carry GLOCKs (the old man carries a GLOCK 35), we both carry S&W 642s as BUGs.

One of my partners carries a Sigma 40 and a 686 as duty weapons. He swears by them. He is good with them too. I think he has been on duty for about 30 years now and still has his second hand 686 holster that he got a long time back. Peopls always comment about the old man with the revolver. Then he out shoots them and they shut up.

Reminds me of quals when the old man and I shoot. Everyone always looks at my Father like something that should belong in a museum display. All the young bucks (I'm part of that group ) that are SWAT or prior ground pounders think that they can out shoot him. When the command to fire is heard. He has his GLOCK 35 out of his holster and rounds sent down range accurately faster then just about everyone on the range. He's four to five rounds into the shooting relay while some folks are still breaking leather.

I'm proud to come from that stock and I'm proud that I'm starting to beat the old man in drawn time. Though I don't believe my skill has anything to do with that. I think his old age does. Though when it comes to the physical sparring and DT stuff.... he has me beat. It's hard for a 5'4" 145lbs guy to take down a 6'2" 260lbs guy that happens to be a black belt in Shotokan. I just get thrown around like a rag doll for the crowd's amusement.

These days, we are Sig only for the primary for regular duty, and the 640-1 below (with black Fitz grips) is a handy second.

If we return to a policy allowing several brands, this tack driving 5" 5906 would move from special duty back to regular, and once again accompany the 640-1:

No, I don't carry autos, but on duty I carry a 4 inch Model 686 in my duty holster with a nickeled Model 37 in my left cargo pocket. For plain clothes or off duty I carry a 3 inch Model 13 (usually in a Bucheimer "Concealer") strong side with the nickeled Model 37 weak side. When one of the Glocksters outshoots me at qualification, it might be time to retire.

My only duty is patrol, so arm appropriately!!

I carry this when patrolling for corn ear worms:

I carry this when lady bugs become rampant!!

Similar grips and barrel length make the change easier.

Don't get me started about when squirrels mob attack the apple trees!

Ah, the life of a retiree!!
