Default Baddest Man to Carry a S&W on TV or Movies

Who was the "Baddest Man" to carry Smith & Wesson Iron on TV or in motion pictures?

Dirty Harry/Clint?

Sonny Crockett?

Sledge Hammer, though he was "bad" in a nonsensical way.

"I had to fire a warning shot at a jaywalker."

Had nickel .44 mag, though, or was it a 629?

More seriously, I nominate Lee Marvin in "Point Blank."

Dirty Harry never barged into an apartment, crashed through a bedroom door, and emptied a four-inch .44 magnum into a bed on the off chance that somebody he hated might be in it.

That's the gold standard, right there. I'll give you Harry as a continuing character, but Lee Marvin's Walker is the guy when it comes to one-time appearances.

Come to think of it, if you include Liberty Valance then Lee Marvin might be the baddest dude with a Colt, too. But there is room to discuss Jack Palance in this context, so I won't press that point.

Chuck Norris carried a 4" Model 29 during the first season of "Walker" I'm pretty sure he could beat Clint up.

There was also Michael Chiklis as Detective Vic Mackey. Did he carry a 4506?

And Michael Cudlitz Officer John Cooper in Southland. I think he had a 5906 or maybe a 4506.

It had the big winged adjustable sights.

1. Dirty Harry (Clint Eastwood)- The man who is still immortalized and is a cult hero for many people........Clint has become the unofficial spokesman for the Model 29, and even people who don't know which end the bullet comes out of still know a Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum is the most powerful handgun in the world........and WILL blow your head clean off! This movie has sold more Model 29's and still does to this day based on the "cool factor" of this movie.

2. Sonny Crockett - He was the coolest man on the planet from 1984-1989! What more can be said, he was the 80's James Bond, who didn't dream of being a Vice Cop in Miami in the 80's. The pistols he used weren't as important as Clint's, 90% of viewers didn't know or care if he had a Bren Ten, a S&W .45, etc. The director just wanted him to use a bad *** looking stainless auto for screen effect.

Will Money used a Schofield. Clint again!
Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy packed a nice pair of Smiths in 48 Hours, with Nolte playing the angry old cop role perfectly. His Smith was an N-frame of some kind.

Sorry guys, you all have forgotten about Denzel Washington (aka Detective Alonzo Harris) in Training Day. Dual wielding Smith & Wesson 4506-1's is bad ***.

With Clint you not only get Dirty Harry (S&W 29) and Unforgiven (S&W Schofield), but you also get the S&W 627 "Bloodwork". And how about that Model 66 in Tightrope?

I'm sure there are a lot more, but these are the ones that come to mind. The only thing is, I don't remember him using S&W autos - does anyone remember him using one?

Baddest ever? Travis Bickle in Taxi driver. Goes postal on pimps with three S&W's at a time, model 29, model 36, and a little escort auto.

Or the creepiest badass, Rutger Hower in The Hitcher, and his highway patrolman.

I have to agree with stantheman86

But, here is a little known fact from a S&W Rep;
Dirty Harry's gun is supposedly a Smith & Wesson Model 29 revolver, chambered for a .44 Magnum cartridge.
In the film, the gun is shown as being capable of sending assailants flying through the air, even when shot from a distance, however,
in reality the gun does not produce such dramatic results.
Additionally, the .44 Magnum round is not considered to be a practical caliber for urban police force use due to recoil (which makes target re-acquisition difficult)
and over-penetration issues, which greatly increases the likelihood of the bullet going through its target and injuring bystanders.
The actual gun used on set by Clint Eastwood was reportedly not a Smith & Wesson Model 29.
According to a story circulated by a member of the studio's prop department, Smith & Wesson did not have a Model 29 in stock at the time,
and so a Smith & Wesson Model 57 chambered for a .41 Magnum cartridge was used.
The Model 29 and Model 57 are identical except for minute differences in bore size, chamber dimensions, and exterior markings, none of which are visible in the film.
Fans however, have claimed that in a close up at the end of the film, the gun carried by Eastwood is in fact a genuine Model 29 chambered for a .44 Magnum.
The close-up clearly shows the markings "44 MAGNU," with the final "M" blocked from view.

Regards,
BM1

Clint's THE man!

...To address another post, it WAS a Colt Detective Special that Russell Crowe used in L.A. Confidential, not a Chief's Special. Lots of great shots of that classic piece, nonetheless. You're right. He definitely had the cool factor going for him.

And, while Clint is my generation's John Wayne, my honorable mention goes to Maxwell Smart [aka: Agent 86] who kept the free world safe with his S&W Centennial!

I have to mention Jack Webb in the later color episodes of "Dragnet" vintage late 60's- early 70's. He carried the venerable 2" Model 10 round butt of LAPD issue. Or maybe Dan Akroyd same role in the movie "Dragnet" when he gives Tom Hanks (Det. Straibeck) a lesson on weaponry, namely his issue Model 10 4" heavy barrel .38 Special. Both are classics as are the guns.

Al Pacino in the Godfather...Demonstrates the proper use of a snub nose at close range... bags the police captain and the Turk.

What about all the old detective shows...Cannon, Barnaby Jones, etc. If I recall on of the detectives uses his j frame snubbie to shoot down a small aircraft chasing him. These guys could consistently hit a man with a rifle who was shooting at them, stop speeding cars and get off up to 11 rounds without reloading their j frames.

George Clooney in from Dusk to Dawn with the 4" N frame..

How about the Humungus from The Road Warrior, my all time favorite movie. I had forgotten about him, and he used what looks to be a Model 29. There is no doubt that he was bad!

Mr Eastwood also carried a 2.5" 66 in "The Gauntlet" and I remember him using a Bodygurd to take out a victim on a train in "The Eiger Sanction".
The more I think about S&Ws in film the more Clint comes to mind. If one list all the GREAT movie tough guys(Bogart, John Wayne,Bruce Willis, Arnold, Stalone, Connery, etc...) it's tough to think of a single Smith! Too easy with Clint.

Dirty Harry carried a 44 magnum revolver, but he shot 44 special loads.
Didn't you guys watch "Magnum Force"?

Officer Phil Sweet: What kind of a load do you use in that .44?
Harry Callahan: It's a 44 Special light load. This size gun it gives you better control and less recoil than a .357 Magnum with wadcutters.

Of course, they were on an indoor range at the time. I interpreted his statement to infer his PRACTICE and competition load and not his carry load. This is realistic to the time and setting of the movie and the department's range competition that immediately followed this scene. The cops shooting their Pythons would have been using wadcutters for the competition and magnums on the street. Harry would have been whooped had shot magnum loads against them.
Clint Eastwood, the actor and director, is a shooter. So is John Milius, who directed!

1. Clint Eastwood, Insp. Callahan, Dirty Harry
2. Lee Marvin, Walker(Parker), Point Blank
3. Chuck Norris, McQuade, Lone Wolf McQuade

And as awesome as he is, the is no freakin' way Chuck could take Clint, and John Wayne could take them both!

Eastwood is bad for sure. He put the .44 mag on the map. Norris just carried the gun in 'Walker' in case the bad guys were too far away to kick!

Another vote for Vic Mackey and his 4506. Truly a bad man. And after all, this is the semi auto section. Regards 18DAI.

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for clearing that up. Harry carried a 44 magnum because he was a hunter, of men. He would clearly be using a hunting type load.

My vote goes to James Remar as Ganz in 48 Hours. A very small role, but very bad.
