I have no input on the sigma, but the m&p and the 3rd gen smith and wessons are great.

The wife has a M&P in 9mm and loves it, I currently have a S&W 6906 and it is a great gun, I think with either you couldn't go wrong. CDNN has the 6906 for $329.00, the M&P is going to cost a little bit more.

Sigma is a great gun. especially for the price. If your eyes are getting bad you want something that will be easy to put larger sight on. I do not know if it is that easy to do with a Sigma. regardless you can always get a laser with a 1" dot at 25 yards. not sure if that would be a great thing though.

If this new gun is intended mostly for range use, then a S&W model 659, or something in that family would work well. I own a 659 and it is my favorite gun for shooting targets.

The S&W 39-2 is the pistol I enjoy the most at the range.

I don't have a smith in 9mm BUT did buy a 40 cal 3rd gen gun... the 4053. and I really enjoy it's sights. Old guy here too and the novacks are really great. I have an older kimber 1911 and have threatened to send the silde in to have his sights installed. For what it's worth, the 686, 29 17 and bhp all still do OK but need something else... what I miss the most, it's my sight...

I have a year old MP9 and my 50 year old eyes have no problem picking up the 3 dot sights at the range. Save up for an MP9, you will not regret it.
(FYI- also have a 5906, just love the MP9)

The Sigma is not a bad gun for the price but the trigger is terrible out of the box. It can be easily fixed by removing a spring or two... I had one and did that mod which really helped alot... It's still a cheap gun and I did'nt keep it long.
That being said, the M&P is a much better chioce and so are the older 3rd. Gen all metal S&W's...Especially for range use.
I've got a M&P9 now and love it... Also have a 6906 and 457 both of which I like just as much as the M&P... Not too long ago I also had a CS-45, 4516, 4566, 5906, 5903 and was very happy with every one.
For a range gun the 5906 is a better choice than the 6906 since the barrel and grip are both longer and the gun is a little heavier since it's stainless top and bottom where the 6906 has a aluminum frame.
CDNN Sports has 5906's for right around 300.00

I've owned a sigma, and I currently own two "value series" (Gen3), two M&P's, and now a S&W 1911.
The M&P is probably the way to go. Price wise they are reasonable; I think my local shop has the basic guns for $480 and the "range kits" for $525. The stock triggers are decent, and if you're willing to put a little money into them they can be excellent. There's a huge amount of aftermarket support: triggers, holsters, etc.. I have had a couple problems with mine, but most of that was a lack of lubrication combined with poor quality Russian ammo. If for some reason every gun I owned disappeared overnight, I'd be buying an M&P9c tomorrow morning. They aren't sexy, but they work.
If this is going to be used exclusively as a range toy, I'd avoid the older SA/DA guns. Personally I've found that my group size with them (even on SA) are about twice times the size of the groups I get shooting an M&P (four times as large as an M&P with a trigger job). I think this is most likely due to the longer post-travel after the shot breaks, but I'm not sure. Either way, unless you're just after a thin carry gun (or just like the style), I'd skip them. There's also not a lot of holster options for them. They are insanely reliable though.
The SW1911 in 9mm is a bit of a race car. If you want a 1911, go for it. If you just want "a gun", the extra cost probably isn't worth it. It feels like it was designed specifically for competing in IDPA ESP division, which is what I'm planning to use mine for.
To be honest, I didn't put enough rounds through the sigma to really get a good feel for it, and I was such a new shooter when I sold it I really can't speak to the overall accuracy. I did have a few jams in the ~1500 rounds I put through it. They are cheap guns though. The SD series is basically a new generation of Sigma. There's not a lot of support for them in terms of aftermarket sights/holsters/parts, so I'd avoid them if you're thinking about getting into competition shooting.

I know it's not mentioned, nor is this the right forum, but have you considered a Beretta PX-4?
I kind-of looked at it before I got my M&P 9, but not too seriously. My son just got the Beretta in .40, both guns handle about the same, comparable size and weight, but the perceived recoil of the .40, when shot back-to-back with the M&P is less.

M&P 9mm recommended
I own 6 different guns and the M&P 9mm is by far my favorite. I have fired close to 1,500 rounds through it and have never had a jam or misfire. It is easy to clean and looks as good today as it did new. I highly recommend it.

Went to the range with my P239 and my buddy's MP 9c. First time I had ever shot the M&P. All I can say is WOW. What a fun gun to shoot!
He has over 600 rounds through it and not one problem.
Made me look twice at my Sig.

See if you qualify for first responder pricing, or if someone you know is qualified and wants to give you a gun.
First responder M&P's cost $389 and come with 3 mags instead of two.
You can buy them at Bud's Police and Express Police Supply, both are online. All of mine were shipped for free.
May be worth a try.

If you can get your hands on a third generation auto, grab it. My humble opinion is they are tops. I carry a 3913 notaglock daily and couldn't be happier with the performance of that firearm. Great guns, the third gens.
