^^^ Ditto. Another 1076 owner happy to pay you $225 for a .40 S&W drop-in barrel. Very much appreciate your efforts on our collective behalf.

I contacted Bar-Sto about a group purchase and was told 50 orders would be required (as mentioned elsewhere in this Forum). Price was $193.25 plus S&H with a 10% discount. For me the price difference is negligable, but the lack of stronger interest is a bit disappointing. Given the decided edge in cheap practice ammo a .40 S&w barrel provides, combined with the lack of other viable options for a barrel swap, I honestly thought there would be MUCH greater interest than has been shown thus far.

Tip 'o cap to BM1. Hope you can at least get one run completed.

Default Good news, getting a little closer

The emails are coming in and I’m also seeing some more replies to the post.

So the good news is, the precision barrel blanks were ordered today, both in .40 S&W and some 9’s.

These length quantities with chamber combinations may vary slightly prior to the commitment of sawing them into the lengths needed for the production run.
The chamber dimensions are the last thing to be machined.

A poll will surely be needed to be taken to figure this one out.

In the .40 / 10mm, I will be able to make;
28 to 30 pcs. – 5.00” Lengths for 1006, 1026 and 1046
and
42 to 45 pcs. – 4.25” Lengths for 1066, 1076 and 1086

Or,
42 to 45 pcs. – 5.00”
and
28 to 30 pcs. – 4.25”
Or, some mix in between depending how I cut up the 26” barrel blanks.

And also in the - .357 SIG / 9x23 Winchester / 9x25 Dillon;
18 to 21 – 5.00”
and,
12 to 14 – 4.25”
Or some mix here also.

I will start a poll that will allow me to make a better decision to the production commitment.
Please look for it and respond, I do not know if you can vote for two or three barrels.
But it will give me another way to tally the counts besides the replies to this post.
Regards,
BM1

Put me down for a 4.25 inch barrel for the 1066 at the $225 or less price.
Thanks for your efforts BM1, this is quite an endeavor and I'm looking forward to owning a piece of it.

Was there not enough interest in the 4006 barrel in .357 sig to go forth with that production?

USMC586,
It's just the .40 S&W and in .357 SIG in the 10XX series are the ones that are in more demand to start.
I've got about 10 that want a .357 SIG barrel for the 4006, I will be doing those also, but after the 10XX series run.

Thumbs up

Hello, I'd be interested in a .357 SIG barrel for my 1026. I would also be interested in a barrel chambered in 9X19mm. I realize that second choice would not be considered very practical or useful but I 'd like to try it just for fun/curiosity/"in the interest of science", etc. I would prefer the #2/semi-drop in type. I would like to fit the spherical end, as you mentioned, and the hood to breech face to minimum dimensions myself. Headspace held close to minimum would be a big plus to me.

Well this is what I have been looking for for a long time and Bad_Man_One looks like a great canidate to make this project work. We can only hope that BM1 can produce barrels of even better tollerances and qualities given his expertise and back round. I hope and pray for his success in this endevor and will buy some barrels from him.

I for one have the Bar-Sto Match Grade 40S&W and 9x25 Dillon 5.00" conversion barrels for my S&W1006. From a handloader & target shooting standpoint it only makes since to get the 40S&W conversion barrel for the 10xx series. Cheaper and more readily avalible ammo and plenty brass around to play with for handloading...

I had to hand fit both of these to my slide and frame to get the fit proper. But I must say the fit was ever so close from Bar-Sto for the 40S&W...it only needed a light stoning on the flat surface where the barrel rides up over the slide lock pin. Barrel hood width and length were precise on the 40S&W barrel.

Now about the 9x25 Dillon, this was more of a challenge, first off the width of the barrel hood required some thinning to fit the slide notch. The end of the barrel hood required trimming for the barrel to achieve proper lock up without excess clearance. Then as with the 40 barrel the underside of the barrel need to be dressed (filed & then polished with a stone and oil) where it rides over the slide stop pin. Bar-Sto had messed up the tiny notch where the recoil rod latches and this needed to be reworked and the chamber needed to be final reamed after the barrel was fitted to the slide. I sent the barrel to Mr. Van at The Gunworks, 1329 1st St, Sandusky, OH and he performed the reaming and rework of the recoil rod notch for me. He did a great job getting my barrel setup...many Thanks Van!

Both of these barrels have worked/functioned very well and are accurate. The cartridges do feed properly from the stock S&W 10mm magazines. However the 9x25Dillon's performance suffers slightly from the 5.00" barreland would better from a longer 6.00" barrel. I will say that the 9x25 Dillon cartridge requires some attention to details while handloading for it...the most critical is the sizing for proper head spacing which should be 0.002" +/- and maintaining tight bullet fit to eliminate setback issues...

In my conversation with BM1 last night it would be nice to get 6.00" barrel into the slide, but he is going to have to check on clearance issues to verify whether the longer barrel will slide thru the barrel bushing as that will be the limiting factor...machining or threading of the extended portion of the barrel might allow for some clearance to achieve this idea. However this will have to be up to him to consider this undertaking. The 10mm and especially the 9x25 Dillon would benifit form the extra barrel length greatly.

I want to add the 357Sig barrel to my collection just because of the potential and vesitility, I love the concept of adding it to the finest S&W 10mm pistols made...1006/1026/1046 and the 1066/1076/1086.

Therefore for those of you who have ever wished or considered the conversion barrel for your 10xx series pistol, stay tuned to this project. Like BM1 has stated this maybe the only chance we have for this to happen.

Shadow1006,
Thank you Sir for the wonderful accolades, it was my pleasure talking with you.
I promise I will do my very best to make everybody happy.
If anyone has any fitting issues with a "Drop in" barrel, I will bend over backwards to make it right.
From what I have deduced from the 7 (Seven) 10XX series that I have been reverse engineering.
I am very impressed with the tolerances that Smith & Wesson held to.

Today,
I increased the order for the 26" 9 m.m. precision barrel blanks, .357 SIG is getting more attention than I had expected.

Thank you again,
BM1

BM1, you may not please everyone but I'd bet most will be estatic with the final product. By the way, the part of the barrel which fits the barrel bushing is likely to be a standard that most all guns will accept without any further fitting because of those tolerances.

I would suspect that the 357 Sig conversion would do well because like the 40S&W ammunition is readily avalible at most common outlets and at reasonable pricing. Many people don't load for themselves therefore they will find that these conversion barrels will compliment their shooting budget in the long run!

Thanks again!

BM1,
Would like to modify my request for just one barrel, a 5" drop in for a 1006. Also, $225 would work for me. PM and email sent.

BM1, do you have a progress report on the barrels? Have the rifled blanks been delivered? Have you gotten started yet?
Best regards!

Shadow1006,
Waiting on the barrel supplier, I'll call this week and see how he's doing.
I made a "mock-up" plug for your 1006, 6.00" 9x25 Dillon.
I'll have to reduce the O.D. a little bit, but, it looks like we're good.
Regards,
BM1

I haven't been on the site for some time so I just saw this. I would be in for a 357 Sig barrel for my 1006 (option #1).

Default Keeping BM1 busy

I'm keeping BM1 busy till the barrel stock comes in. See the other thread on extended slide stops that he modifys, I just sent him 3 to do. Being a lefty I think they are wonderful things and a standard item for my 1911s. it is nice to finaly get one for a S&W. Even when I am doing weak hand shooting I never have a problem locking back the slide by mistake, seems far fetched. I wonder how many people have really done it and how many have read about it? My left index is down on the trigger and my right thumb is at the rear where a thumb safety would be if there were one. I sent him 2 1076 and 1 6926. I could see how maybe the right thumb might have problems with an extended on a compact but I want to give it a try. I shoot the HK45 a lot and never have trouble with the ambi slide release. The other argument is "all you have to do is slingshot" it is hard with a flashlight in your other hand or if you are laying on it in a dificult situation or it is unuseable due to some reason behond your control. I have practiced one hand reloading and it isn't easy till you do it a few hundred times and even then it is easier with an extended slide stop. Boy I am chatty when I have not slept in 36 hours! LOL Just my thoughts for what little worth they are.

This is a really great project. Makes me wish I had a 1OO6, as always. This thread makes me dream of a 9 x 25 Dillon barrel for my DW Razorback. I have three 4OO6's, but I don't really need a 357 SIG barrel for them. Sure would be cool to see some production photos making the barrels.

Until this post,
I had not given it much thought, I also own a DW Razorback,
So there is a slight possibility of making one or two.
It would be some time down the road, I'll let you know.

Unfortunately I don't have a 10XX at the moment, but I would take a .357 sig barrel for a 4006 when you get to round two.

Default Latest Update - Precision Barrel Blanks Shipped

The Latest Update - Precision Barrel Blanks Shipped Friday 3/18/2011
Both 9 m.m. and .40 S&W should be here next week.

IF YOU HAVE NOT PUT IN YOUR VERBAL REQUEST - YOU NEED TO DO SO NOW.

I am putting together the Excel Spread Sheet and I need the numbers to see if everyone will end up with what they want.

Telling me,
"To get in touch with me when you're ready to run" or "Let me know when you're ready to run",
DOES NOT PUT YOU IN FOR A BARREL.

I NEED TO KNOW THE SPECIFICS OF WHAT YOU WOULD BE INTERESTED IN;
The CALIBER and the MODEL NUMBER and HOW YOU WANT IT TO FIT?
(Ref. #1 - #4)
If no reference to fit is included at the time of the order, it will be a "DROP-IN".

#1. Drop-in means more clearance to fit all the guns, no guarantee of the accuracy but it will be no worse than the accuracy equivalent to the factory barrel.

#2. Semi drop-in, the spherical diameter on the muzzle end would be left oversize by .002" - .003" to be polished in by you,
just need to spin it in a “devise” and polished to fit with as little as 600 grit silicon carbide sandpaper or as little as a “Scotch-Brite” pad.
If you wish, the breech face locking lug to the barrel/slide locking lug length can be left over a little bit at this point and you can "file" it in.
I would need to know that request when the order is received.

#3. You can send in your complete slide and barrel assembly (barrel and recoil guide rod and recoil spring)
and your barrel will be match fitted with aerospace gauges that measure as small as .0001”,
the breach face locking lug, barrel/slide locking lugs and muzzle spherical end fit to your barrel bushing all in your slide, as I did with my 9x23 Bar-Sto.

#4. You can send in your gun, it includes #3 (above) and the bottom lugs will be fit to the frame and slide release lever locking pin for a total match lock-up.
If the slide overlaps the frame in either direction at the rear, I can match it better at this point (with the new barrel).
If your slide protrudes over the frame, with your factory barrel, I can/will correct that also at this time.
(I had correct this with my 9x23 Bar-Sto)
If the frame protrudes out from under the slide, there is nothing I can adjust to repair that.
This also includes range test firing with std. "over the counter factory ammo" to determine a recommended Wolff spring.
I purchased the full range of springs for both length barrels.
(Does not include 9 X 25 Dillon unless you send me 10 - 15 rounds)

The manufacturing facility that I am working with is a Class 07 FFL manufacturer.

The caliber choices are;
.40 S&W in 1006, 1026 and 1046
.40 S&W in 1066, 1076 and 1086

10 m.m. in 1006, 1026 and 1046
10 m.m. in 1066, 1076 and 1086

.357 SIG in 1006, 1026 and 1046
.357 SIG in 1066, 1076 and 1086

.356 TSW in 1006, 1026 and 1046
.356 TSW in 1066, 1076 and 1086

9 m.m. X 23 Winchester in 1006, 1026 and 1046
9 m.m. X 23 Winchester in 1066, 1076 and 1086

9X25 Dillon in 1006, 1026 and 1046
9X25 Dillon in 1066, 1076 and 1086

There have also been a couple "SPECIAL REQUESTS" that are being looked at on an individual basis.

The 4013 and 4003/4006 series will have to happen some time down the road.

Best regards,
BM1

That's great to hear!

Seeing the edit, I'm still down for a .40 (1) and .357 SIG (1) barrel for my 1006. I would like to send you my slide (option #3), but if the larger group just wants to do drop ins (option #1), I'll go that route to make it easier.

Smile Barrel Blanks Are Starting To Arrive

Hi All,
We just received the 9 m.m. barrel blanks today, the .40 S&W blanks should be in Friday.
Once they are all in, it will probably be at least 6 weeks before we start to deliver finished products.

I have the capability to make about 75 of the .40 S&W bore / 10 m.m. (45, 5.00" and 30 4.25")
and about 40 of the 9 m.m. bore / .356 TSW, .357 SIG, 9m.m. X 23 Win., 9 X 25 Dillon (24, 5.00" and 16, 4.25")

About 70% of my capability is already spoken for.

When we get close to the fitting and chambering operations, based on the verbal quantities that I have gotten, I will be taking the order/payments at that time.
All credit card payments will be done via phone.
Postal or Bank Money Orders by mail, NO PERSONAL CHECKS.
We are working on setting up the web site to display our products, contact information and mailing address.

Best regards,
BM1

What are prices for .40 S&W barrels in the different grades of fit and your charge for fitting one to a slide and or frame?

The additional costs to "Fit" the barrels were decided upon by traveling to, emailing and making calls to, I think all the gunsmiths within 100 miles of my location.
I was quite amazed how much these guys get to fit a barrel to a slide and/or slide-frame combination.
They quoted some outrageous prices and some have no more equipment than a drill press, a lapping plate and a couple of files.

Fit #1 - "Drop-In" barrel only - $225.00, as stated earlier.
Fit #2 - "Semi Drop-In" barrel only - $225.00 also.
Fit #3 - Precision fitting to your slide - Additional $50.00
Fit #4 - Precision fitting to your complete gun - Additional $100.00 (Includes #3)

See fit #1 thru #4 below, there is new added information for #2, #3 and #4.
I did not find any gunsmiths that would do what I'm doing for the prices I'm offering.
I trying to establish this as a true turn-key offer for you folks.

Regards,
BM1

I'll take my two barrels as drop-in (option #1) as opposed to fitting with my slide...

Need to cut some corners, being I just found out I’m having the kitchen redone.

If it's not too late, I'd like one drop-in .40 calibre barrel for a 1076.

Count me in for a 1006 bbl in 357sig & if/when you get to the 4006, I would love one in 357sig too. I tried to get Barsto to do them, but they wanted 25 then when I was almost there, they pulled the plug on the 357sig. Please keep me in the loop. Obviously a semi-drop in would be easier but I am open to custom fit. The price is very fair.
thanks

Hello,

If it's not too late to get in on the ordering, I would like a drop-in .40 and 357 sig barrel for my 1006, plus an extended slide stop assembly.

Thanks

Default Late Order

I just this week purchased an excellent S&W 1006 and now have just discovered this thread due to another post for a late order.

If it's not too late, I very much also would like to order a DROP-IN .40S&W barrel for my new 1006.

Thanks!

Default Production Update - Number of Remaining Conversion Barrels Available ! ! !

Hello Everyone,
Just to give you all the "Heads Up" on the project.
The first couple basic operations have been completed on both the 9 m.m. and .40 S&W barrel blanks for all the different barrel lengths, 3.625", 4.25", 5.00" and a special 6.00" length.
(Only the Shadow knows..........)
This includes the saw cutting operation and facing both ends to qualify the manufacturing OAL, over all lengths)

I am very pleased with the way things are progressing.
Open machine time has not been a hindrance as of yet.
I do see a couple of production bottlenecks down the road, I'll cross that path when I get there.

Because of the barrel supplier giving me gun drilled/riffled blanks that were not quite to the stated concentricity tolerance to the O.D., in one of the batches,
it has forced me to re-engineer the design, having to add a couple of operations to true up the parts to the through bores utilizing centers,
allowing me to drive off of more controlled surfaces (Diameters) that I have now created.

The long story - short version is that the irony of this;
because of this oversight on the part of the barrel supplier it will result in a much finer end product.

I have to say that I wish I had thought of processing them in this manner in the beginning so as not to have to change around all my CAD/CAM designs/drawings.
See note: "Hindsight is always 20/20"

The other thing I would like to add is that it appears that the quantities that I initially selected is close to working out perfect.
Without taking a poll in the beginning, there was no real way to judge what the response would have been and that would have added quite a bit of time to this little project.

If everyone follows through with their verbal requests,
it will leave me with very few to advertise on the other forums and that's OK for the first production run.

Available remaining barrels;

In the 9 m.m. bore, (9x19, .356 TSW, .357 SIG, 9x23 Winchester and 9x25 Dillon)
There are;
4 - 4.25" barrels available and
2 - 5.00" barrels available.

Slightly more remaining in the .40 S&W/10 m.m. bore, because I figured for twice the quantity.
There are;
10 - 4.25" barrels available and
17 - 5.00" available.

I thought more people would be interested in the .40 S&W conversion than the 9's and the .357 SIG
I now know better for next time, although it will probably be a smaller run being the market will be saturated, maybe?
See note: "Hindsight is always 20/20"

Sorry about being so long winded, I just want to answer any/all questions that you all might have.
Feel free to contact me with any questions.
Best regards,
BM1

BM1, Glad to hear of your progress, it sounds like it's going well. I would like to order a 4.25" in .40 in the #1 drop-in configuration and a 5.00" in .40, in the #2 configuration.

Please PM me with your payment details.

Thanks again,
TS
