Default ATTN. 10XX Auto Owners, Production Has Started - .40 S&W & .357 SIG Barrels

Anyone interested ?

Many of you know me through this great forum and that I have been heavily involved with the .356 TSW cartridge.
Posting the many conversions that I have worked with, having great success and enjoying the testing and evaluation of this great round.

6906 in .356 TSW, Marlin Camp-9/.356 TSW, New Project - Ruger PC4/.357 SIG

Making .356 TSW from other cartridges? - PROBLEM SOLVED

356 TSW Reloads

Anyone want to turn a standard 9 m.m. into a .356 TSW ?

.356TSW brass - Group buy?

WTB - S&W 6906 barrel P/N 236940000 - (Found One)

Model 3566 - 356TSW - Hope I did the right thing here?

My retirement from Aerospace Machining with 30+ years experience in many, many types of manufacturing processes has benefited me a great deal in my “odd” endeavors.

I am now contemplating the development and manufacturing of drop-in/semi-drop-in replacement barrels for all of us that have been thinking how nice it would be to have the advantages of shooting the .40 S&W and .357 SIG from out 10XX series handguns.
The first “Test Run” would probably be a lot size of 25-50 of each barrel (depending on the demand?) to accommodate the two different calibers in the two different barrel lengths, 5.00” and 4.25” with retrospect to the 1006, 1026, 1046 and the 1066, 1076 and 1086.

Wolff Gun Springs has a variety of replacement springs to taylor the recoil impulse and brass ejection to your liking.

Wolff lists the stock spring for the 1006, 1026 and 1046 @ 18#’s
They show 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, 22 and 24#’s

Also the stock spring for the 1066, 1076 and 1086 @ 17#’s
They show 14, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, and 22#’s

I am hoping to start the development after the first of the year.

If this dream works out I would like to expand to the 4013 style and 40XX series with .357 SIG barrels.
But that would be a little ways away at this point.

Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
BM1

Hey BM1, I would definetly be interested! I have a 4006 and wouldn't mind "spicing it up" so to speak with a .357 SIG barrel!
So when you get this project up and running I'd appreciate a PM.
Happy Holidays, Dale

Assuming it was affordable, I would definately be interested in a .40 bbl for a 1006. Might be interested in a .40 bbl for a 1076 as well.

Greetings and Merry Christmas.

I have a 1086 that is a keeper. I would not mind having a drop in barrel
for .40 S&W ctg. if priced in the $100. range.
I have little experience with such things but, have done some
1911 barrel swapping in the past.

I do not have much interest in the 357 sig ctg. but would gladly experiment with a barrel in my 1086 if asked to.

Regards
Allen Frame

I'd love a 357SIG barrel for a 4013TSW or 4006TSW.

Default More information added

Adding a note here, as I mentioned before;
I am a retired Aerospace CAD/CAM/CNC Manufacturing Engineer/Plant Manager.

All barrels would be manufactured on CNC Turning Centers (Lathes) and CNC Machining Centers (Mills)
To the latest ANSI/SAAMI Chamber Specifications and standard SAE and JIS thread specifications.
Included would be Centerless Grinding operations and Glass Bead Blast surface finishing, like the satin factory finish.
All barrels would be engraved to identify the calibers.

All of which means MATCH GRADE Barrel Tolerances.
Not what comes out the factory or mass production shops as some of us have experienced many times.

I neglected to mention that there is the opportunity to have your barrel threaded here also, with your choice of thread.
The friend of mine that I am working with on this project has a CNC manufacturing facility and the FFL license to manufacture firearms and also silencers.
We have not finalized which grade of steel we are going to produce the barrels out of yet.
I'm thinking it will either be 410, 416 SS or we could opt for a stronger 4140 Chrome Moly Steel but it would be delivered to you in the “White” state, not blued.

I am venturing into this because it is something that I have always wanted to do this with my 10XX series firearms and
I love to tinker in different caliber interchangeabilities as some of you may already know.
I'll just make many more to share.....................
The cost is to be determined based on covering the material and production costs.
The factory charges about $125 for a stock replacement barrel when they are in stock, Numrich gets around $133.35 and again, when they are in stock.
They will be more expensive than a factory replacement barrel from Smith and Wesson, this I can say with certainty, as I'm sure you all know.
What we are planning on manufacturing is a barrel that would be far superior to the barrel manufactures that I see out there pedaling their goods at prices between $150.00 and $300.00+

Hey, I've paid $80 to $130 for grips ranging from modified factory plastic to exotic wood all for the looks and of course also the feel.
These barrels will be precision machined steel and are specifically designed to enhance the range of functionality of your gun [shooting ammo], cheaper and/or faster/more accurate rounds.

Another additional note;
We are looking at also producing extended slide stops for the many different frame widths of the third gens and also extended magazine release buttons and a button to replace the decocking lever on the right side of the ambi safety/decocking levers.

As I mentioned before, this is all in the early stages of the whole process.
Please be patient.
I am happy that I have been overwhelmed with responses I have received. but it takes allot of time to go through the emails and respond.
Please use this email, [email protected] for any and all questions on this endeavor.

I'd be in for a .357 SIG and .40 barrel for the 1006... more emphasis on the .40, but would snatch up a .357 one, as well. Would prefer stainless, especially since I'm planning on bead-blasting my 1006 sometime in the future. I jumped on the BerettaForum’s SGS compensator project, and definitely would be up for adding this to my collection.

I remember from another 10mm conversion thread that there was talk about taking .357 barrels and turning them into 9x25mm Dillon. I believe DoubleTap makes a few different loadings for the Dillon, so it might be another one to look at. Figuring that two barrels would probably already put me into debt, I might buy a third for 9x25mm Dillon, if it were an option.

I know a few other 10mm owners on the various forums, which I’ll point them to this thread. Not sure if you are a part of 10mmTalk, but if this does get closer to production, I'm sure you'll get a good amount of interest there. If you are not a member, I can link this thread to them, but I do remember at least two other threads that didn’t lead anywhere, so some are a little weary on this subject.

Happy Holidays.

I'd be interested in both a .40 and 357 Sig barrel for my 1006. Would the 10MM mags need to modded also, or will they work with the new barrels?

I think I would also be interested in a .40 barrel for a 1006. I am curious though, what magazines would work to feed .40 in a 1006? Would 4006 magazines work?

For conversions like that, you would use standard magazines.

The .40 round is a shortened 10mm, so it will fit in the magazine with some space to spare. The .357 would be similar since it uses a bottlenecked .40 casing. Glock 20 conversions work the same way, and back when .40 1006 barrels were produced, that is how they were ran.

The magazines would not need to be modified. Also, 4006 magazine would not work, since they are double-stacked and the 10mm magazines are single-stacked.

So at one point in time there were .40 barrels made for a 1006? Were they factory made?

I would be interested in a 40S&W barrel for a 1006 depending on price. $200ish range would be good, while $400 would be too rich for my blood. Definitely prefer for it NOT to be in the white.

I would be interested in a 357 Sig barrel for a 4006, plus a 357 Sig barrel for a 1006.

I've got the reamer for 9x25 Dillon, so if I don't like the barrel for the 1006, I'll just convert it to 9x25.

Hope this helps.

Not factory... they were produced by BarSto. I do know that a member of 10mmTalk has a 9x25mm Dillon barrel, which I believe was also made by them.

Most of the past attempts to get a .40 or .357 SIG barrel made has been through them, but they want a minimum of fifty barrels to be purchased (not for all types, like a total of both .40 and .357, but fifty of each type). When you try to get that together on the internet, it is impossible to get fifty people. You may get some that say yes, but not respond when you are ready... which would screw your run if you were just around fifty.

I got a .357 sig barrel for my 4046 from bar-sto before they stopped making them. It works like a champ! Swap barrels, add a heavier spring for the .357 and voila. Point of aim differences are not that bad and one day I'll switch to Novak adjustable sights and that will be that. A perfect 2 caliber gun.

I think it would be a great idea for the 10XX series but what about magazines to handle the shorter cartridge length of .40 S&W and 357 sig?

+1 on the .30 Luger 39XX BTW!

/c

I would definitely be interested in .40 S&W and .357 Sig barrels for my 1006.
A .357 Sig barrel for a Shorty .40 would be cool, too.

I would take a 357 sig for the 1006 and the 1076, and maybe for the 4006 also. If you go for it count me in.

Default 40 S&W & 357 Sig

I'm interested in both for my 1006! Have a 357 Sig in the works for my Model 22 Glock! Let me know if/when production is nearing. Assuming true drop in fit!

Works fine in other 10mm platforms. In fact, in my Delta Elite my 10mm mags work better than the 40's with the spacer.

If you made a run of .40 S&W for the 1066/76/86 barrel lengths I would be interested in one.

The magazines would not need to be modified. Also, 4006 magazine would not work, since they are double-stacked and the 10mm magazines are single-stacked.
I agree regarding the magazines. The 10XX-series mags should work and feed fine for the .40S&W, .357Sig & 9x25Dillon cartridges, just as the stock 10mm mags for the Glock 20 & 29 work without a hitch w/ those rounds. 10mm fans on GT and elsewhere have posted repeatedly about having NO issues with feeding.

These rounds are all 10mm case-derivatives anyway, so for extraction and ejection purposes the critical "back-end" dimensions are identical. Plus, the polished, integral ramp of 10XX-series barrels should work in favor of smooth feeding off the mags, not against it.

In 1911 guns, I've read about IPSC/IDPA guys who, when they interchange their 10mm barrels for .40 tubes, "long-load" their .40 reloads (i.e., increase the COAL a bit) to ensure consistent feeding. But my understanding was they still were using a stock 10mm mag.

Just FYI ...

BadManOne,

It'd be terrific if you turned this into an on-going second career -- after retirement.

Please place the emphasis on "on-going"!

Any way you shuffle it, it's a terrific idea -- provided they all drop in.

Keep us posted!

With that being said, a member on 10mm Talk has both a .40 and 9x25 Dillon barrel (both were BarSto). He posted a few times in the project threads over the years, and never made any mention of issues.

Don't think there was a .357 SIG barrel made, but being a bottlenecked round just like the 9x25, it should feed just fine.

Really hope this goes down. I'm looking at moving to an organization that uses .357 SIG, and wouldn't mind seeing what kind of performance I can get out of the round. Converting is better than buying myself a P229 in it (I don’t have a .40 gun to convert).

Default Progress report on the 9/40 conversion barrels

I have contacted quite a few barrel manufactures about producing some 9 m.m. and .40 S&W rifled blanks because
they can do the gun drilling and button riffling more efficiently than I can.
They seem to prefer to use alloy steels (4140 types), where I’m asking for 400 series Stainless Steels.
I am still waiting for more quotes to come in.

In the interim I found a Bar-Sto barrel in 9 m.m. X 23 m.m. from a forum member and purchased it.
The reason is partly that I wanted to see the quality, fit and finish of a Bar-Sto (Drop-in?).
The other reason is that I had found 7 - 50 round boxes (at a good price) of 125 gr. Winchester Silvertips HP's in 9 m.m. X 23 m.m
with the thoughts of de-capping them to use the brass for my .356 TSW reloads.
Well, after de-capping one box, what a pain in the butt that was.
I got to thinking about shooting the ammo rather than de-capping them and happen to find the Bar-Sto barrel by chance.
Was I ever surprised when I received it? It had to be re-worked quite a bit, it was definitely not a "drop-in".
The barrel locking lug in front of the chamber hood that seats into the slide when in battery was not cut deep enough by .024” on the diameter compared to my factory barrels.
The location of the breech face lug on top was binding on the slide breech face and was also way out of square to the thru bore.
I ground .010” to fit leaving .002” clearance during lock-up. Stock S&W barrel and slide seem to be .004-.008 clearance.
The .204 diameter pin on the slide lock lever that holds the assembly all together and contacts an area under the bottom lug and
controls the position that the slide locates forward lock-up relative to the back of the frame was off.
It had to be reground with a matching radius, I had to push it back an additional .032” for the back of the slide to line up.
The chamber was also way out of spec and it was re-bored in a CNC Lathe to SAAMI Specs.
Now it's ready to go to the range.

Some pictures here:
1006/1026/1046 in 9mm X 23mm / .356 TSW

I will update as needed, best regards,
BM1

Default Another progress report on the conversion barrel

Please read all the way to the bottom as you will need to decide how you would like yours to “fit”.

All the chambers will be machined to “Match Quality” specifications
in .40 S&W with a 1-16" (6 Groove) twist per SAAMI/ANSI Specs,
(Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute, Inc. / American National Standards Institute)

I have made the decision to make the initial run of 60 barrels total.
30 pieces will be with a 5.00” length for the 1006, 1026 and 1046 and 30 pieces with a 4.25” length for the 1066, 1076 and 1086.

They will be made using Crucible 416R Stainless Steel.
You can look it up on their web site here.
Crucible Selector - Crucible 416R
It is a hardenable chromium Stainless Steel particularly suited for use in high quality precision barrels.
The attainable hardness of Crucible 416R is guaranteed to RC35 minimum.

Typical Chemistry
Carbon 0.12%
Chromium 12.50%
Manganese 0.40%
Phosphorus 0.03%
Sulfur 0.13%
Silicon 0.40%
Molybdenum 0.40%

Now, here it is:
Because I had to substantially rework a “DROP IN” Bar-Sto barrel for my 1006 in 9 m.m. x 23 m.m. Winchester to make it fit.
Read post #5, your results may vary depending on the ammo and/or the load/bullet combination you shoot.
1006/1026/1046 in 9mm X 23mm / .356 TSW

With the manufacturing tolerances that Smith and Wesson use, there are four ways to supply the barrel.
Question is which way would you prefer it?

1. Drop-in means more clearance to fit all the guns, no guarantee of the accuracy but it will be no worse than the accuracy equivalent to the factory barrel.

2. Semi drop-in, the spherical diameter on the muzzle end would be left oversize by .002 to be polished in by you,
just need to spin it in a “devise” and polished to fit with as little as 600 grit silicon carbide sandpaper or as little as a “Scotch-Brite” pad.

3. You can send in your complete slide and barrel assembly and your barrel will be match fitted with aerospace gauges that measure as small as .0001”,
the breach face locking lug, barrel/slide locking lugs and muzzle spherical end fit to your barrel bushing all in your slide, as I did with my 9x23 Bar-Sto.

4. You can send in your gun, it includes #3 and the bottom lugs will be fit to the frame and slide release lever locking pin for a total match lock-up.
The manufacturing facility that I am working with is an FFL manufacturing shop. I also did this with my 9x23 Bar-Sto.
You can see all my results for a custom fit in the link above.

Regards,
BM1

Many have replied, BUT, some were not specific about model designation and caliber combination?
The first run is for both 5.00” and 4.25” 10XX series, ONLY 30 OF EACH, that’s it for the first run.
When their gone, their all gone.
The material/barrel blanks will be ordered Monday.

So, based on those that were specific, I was able to make some kind of tally, so far.
12 pcs. - .40 S&W for the 1006/1026/1046 Series
7 pcs. - .40 S&W for the 1066/1076/1086 Series

It’s still early for the .357 SIG, but based on this, I’m thinking it does not look like this is going to happen in any kind of quantity.
I would just order a couple .355 bore barrel blanks for the SIG and just make a few for myself,
it would be better making more of each, like I’m doing with the .40 S&W.

If I get a better response then the .357 SIG would be next.
8 pcs. - .357 SIG for the 1006/1026/1046 Series
2 pcs. - .357 SIG for the 1066/1076/1086 Series

After that maybe the .357 SIG for the 4006, 40XX series and a few for the 4013.
Although in doing a little more research 40XX series, there were multiple barrel part numbers for them also.
Also the 4013, I find that there were three different models and six different barrels.
You would have to either, send yours in or send a blueprint or describe in detail all the dimensions so I can compare mine as a reference.
Maybe in the future, with the help of the forum members that have the different barrels,
I can establish a data base and identify the different part numbers of each by a quick dimensional check.
5 pcs. - .357 SIG so far.

Please,
If you responded but were not specific, I need the specific detail about the model designation and caliber combination that you would be interested in.
PLEASE DO SO NOW.
You are not being held to it, I just need some kind of numbers to “shoot” for.
I have no fear that when they are all done that they will all go, this may only happen once in my lifetime.
I am expending quite allot of time and $$$$ with the reverse engineering of these and I do not want to disappoint anybody here.

Regards,
BM1

For me option 1 is preferred but option 2 is acceptable. What is the projected cost? 1066 is probably my first choice. thanks

That would not be a problem once I start the 9 m.m. production.
You have the advantage that I would like one myself also.

I'm going to try to hold the cost at no more than $225.00, I'm hoping it will be much less.

I just spent $200.00 on a Bar-Sto, 9 m.m. x 23 m.m. Winchester and had to rework the heck out of it because it did not fit, never mind function.
No fault of the forum member that I bought it from.
He told me that there were no guarantees and I agreed to it knowing full well that I can re-machine anything with the equipment that I have available.

If the numbers of sales just aren’t there, then I'll have to sell them for the value that I have into them.
At that point we will not see this kind of undertaking ever again.
Metaphorically speaking, I will not hand them out with a $50.00 or $100.00 bill wrapped around each one of them as a gift, I have to cover my costs.
I'm doing this because I want to, there is no profit in this for me, I think everyone needs to understand this.

I am going to hold off ordering the .40 barrel blanks for least a week.
I was going to place the order Monday for 15, 22'' barrel blanks, that would make 60 pcs., 30-5.00" and 30 4.25",
(I loose 2.00" worth of material on one end for the button riffling tools to start the cut properly).
Because of the massive lugs of the 10 m.m. barrel, 1.500" stock in 416R Stainless Steel has to be used, 1.400 by design but not available.

I need to know if the $225.00 (MAXIMUM) price will work for you guys.
If that is not acceptable, then, I’m truly sorry, it’s over before it starts.

You keep me posted and I will keep you posted.
Regards,

Ill take one in 40 for the 1006. As long as it is made to be a drop in fit, I'm in. I don't have the tools, time, or talent to take it any other way. Just let me know where to send the money order.

I have to put this back to the top of the postings, I will do it daily if no one responds to keep it on top.

Please read post #45, I need more replies on the price before this project can commence.
The amount of money that I will be putting front here is substantial.
I need those replies/comments on the $225.00 price…………….

And,
Another option that was brought to my attention by a forum member is a 10 m.m. Match Grade fitted barrel.

Yes it is option, one I had not thought of.
All the operations will be done using CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled) equipment.
The chambers are single point bored using a rough and finishing carbide boring tool.
At that point in the production process it’s just a slight program change.
I would contact you when we are at that point in the production.

I need to know if the $225.00 (MAXIUM) price for a DROP IN barrel will work for you guys.
If that is not acceptable, then, I’m truly sorry, it’s over before it starts.

You keep me posted and I will keep you posted.
I really need the feedback here……………………..
Regards,
BM1

I will pay $225 for a .40 barrel, drop in, for a 1006. Just let me know when and where to send the postal money order.

Thanks for your efforts.
