S&W 5906 - Grips - Can you put custom grips on it?
I will soon have a lightly used 5906 and thought I would look into getting some custom grips - wood or other material. Can this be done? It appears that the Hogues have only one screw/pin on the bottom and this grips have tabs to hold them on.
There are some out there but one had two holes on each grip [two per side]. I think these are for the #59 only...
Any one make custom grips for the 5906?

Hogue wooden grips are the only ones I am aware of in that material though I'd love to hear of other options. If they work the same way as on the 45XXs they will fatten the grip noticeably.
The ones with two screw holes are for the previous 1st and 2nd gen guns.

You're going to be limited to Hogue for wood grips.

K&N aka Nill grips out of Germany also makes wood grips. These are thinner than the rather bulky Hogues, but are pricey and require drilling and tapping of the frame. The latter isn't a big deal but at about 2x the price of Hogues, the cost is the problem for most.

I had Hogues on my P226 for awhile. They looked gorgeous and were well made, but were very fat. I wound up selling them on Gun Broker and putting the stock grips back on. I guess Hogues are great if you're looking for nice wood and a fatter grip, just wasn't for me though.

Go to eBay and search for 5906 grips. Can get you a nice $650 set of these:

How do you remove the grips on a 5906 (the newer generation with no grip screws. I haven't had much experience with S&W pistols, only with their fine revolvers.

Punch the pin out at the bottom and pull the grip off.

These aren't custom, but, they're factory "White Dress Grips" also called "White Parade Grips".
I have only ever seen this one.

Hogue Wood Grips 5906
I put a set on. They are beautiful grips, but really do fatten the grip.
I have short fingers, but no problem with fat grips.

How much "fatter" are the Hogue wooden grips compared to the Hogue rubber grips?

I've thought about those Hogue grips also for one of my
5906's or 4013/14's.
I wonder if you could sand down the side facing the grip frame and make them slimmer, or if that would make them too thin structurally?

The local range had a rental 3913LS with silver or grey factory grips. Maybe, just maybe, they were white ones that were evenly dirty, but I doubt it.

I've been hunting around the internet for a few days looking for those grips. I don't think S&W makes them anymore since I haven't seen them in their store.
The 3913 Lady Smith had similar grips, grey I believe. But it would be nice to find white grips for a SS finish.

Hydrographic or Wood grips
Here are the before and after pictures of the 5906 grips.
1. Original factory grips
2. Hydrographic Mahogany
3. Hydrographic Black Stripe Grain
4. ???? possibly Hydrographic Dark Walnut?
Can anyone tell me if #4 is real wood or Hydrographic? If you go to their website it kinda looks like their dark walnut (Wood Grain set 2). Anyone know if S&W ever produced a real wood grip? Thanks Hydrographic Printing by Hydro Print Services
PS if I used your picture I am sorry I just cut and pasted what I found here and on the internet.

Pic2 is my 5906 with Hydroprinted grips. No prob on using the pic. Pics 3 and 4 are; I believe, original S&W grips for a special stocking dealers run. More of a decal than anything else. One I saw you could see it peeling away. IM me if you want info on the set I have.

I had one set of the brown 5900 grips. I made the mistake of letting Gunscrubber get on them. The finish peeled right off.

I just bought a 5906 this weekend. I want to replace the rubber Hogue grips with the S&W plastic versions. Trying to decide between straight or curved. I am leaning toward curved. Any good sources to buy grips from? I see them for less than $20 on Midwayusa.com but the curved ones are backordered until at least August.
Likewise, any good sources for magazines (new or used)?

Stock straight grips...
*** I just found em at Midway USA... ***
I have been searching for the stock straight back grips for my 5903, as the ones that came with it are kinda worn (former LEO trade in - alot of holster wear on right side of grip). Same problem - everyone has them listed as backorder... and I was unable to get ANY dates sadly =P

For those curious, here's the measurements of the stock grip compared to the Hogue Rubber set for thr 5900 series.
5 1/2 inches, stock curved grips.
6", Hogue Rubber grips.
Measurements taken of the circumference between the middle back of the grip and the underside of the trigger guard.

Another option is to send in a decent (doesn't have to be new) factory straight or curved to ROBAR in the 'Valley of the Sun' and have them stippled.
I have done it over 8 times for all of my 9mm/.40/.45 guns. I like the svelte grip that the factory grips afford, but don't care for the way they look. The stippling affords me with "Gorilla Snot'-type of grip without hanging up on fabric like the rubber Hogues.
I have to confess that I will try the Hydrographic grip route on my Model 915. I just have decided if a light stipple will be done first.
I usually keep the S&W seal intact. Just another option. The grips last forever. Hope this helps!

I've been using Mec-Gar mags from Midway USA, save a few bucks and run perfect in my 59. Have a finger ridge on the baseplate that actually looks way better than my original

Here's an idea if you want to customize.
1. Take a junky pair of overly used stock grips.
2. Smear Liquid Nails smoothly 1/16 inch (or less)
3. Being careful to leave the butt pin open.
3. Let it harden (24 hours)
4. Stipple it yourself with a dremel to your liking.
5. Get yourself some bake-on duracoat color.
I'm seriously thinking very loudly here as I may try this method myself.

If you are talking about post #18, the second pic is Hydroprinted. States so in post #20. I've seen the ones in the last two pics and those looked like someone tried to place a sticker on the grips. Example I saw it was 'peeling' off. Hydroprint is the way to go.

Why not use one of the many texture type paints that are on the market? Another alternative would be spray on truck bed liner or rubberized undercoating.

I'm a long time fan and owner of the 5906 S&W auto, and went full circle on the grips. I'm a big fan of Hogue grips also, and bought both a set of Hogue rubber and a set of Hogue wood grips for mine. Even though I have fairly large hands, the Hogue grips were just too fat for me. I wound up going back to stock curved back grips. They just work best for me.

You may want to try the 40xx grip.
