Default model 41 problems

My friend asked me to shoot his model 41 to see if I had any better luck with it. Here's what I observed. When you load 10 rounds into the mag, chamber a round, and fire the gun, it jams as the fresh round begins to feed, before the first round has been pulled out of the barrel. If you only load 9 into the mag, the gun runs better, but still sometimes fails to eject. I was using bulk Federal ammo, and it looks like the rim isn't large enough for the extractor. There is a channel near the barrel that receives the extractor, and the ammo rim doesn't appear to extend into the channel area. I'm wondering if that is part of the problem. I also suspect it could use new springs. It doesn't look to have been shot very much, but it's an A serial number gun, and I bet it has its original springs. Anyone have any other ideas? Also the trigger occasionally sticks and won't release the hammer. Haven't a clue why that occurs. Any guesses? Thanks.

Why not try some other ammo? Most 22 RF semi-automatics are all somewhat finicky as to what ammo works best.

Check out this link

Model 41 maintenance

Also as the other poster said try different brands of ammo.

Finally try cleaning the magazines.

Default ...ammo and safety...

While learning about how to use my Model 41, I had the same experience.

Based on advice, I tried CCI Standard Velocity ammo and the extractor/ejector problem has nearly disappeared.

While shooting with a friend, I had the trigger lock up on me again. My very observant friend noticed that the base of my thumb, as it wrapped around the grip, had pressed against the bottom of the safety. It did not cycle the safety to the safe position, but it moved just enough so that it was in safe though it looked like it was in the fire position.

I now press full down on the safety often to check it.

Another thing I've learned is that I was over lubricating my pistol. I sent it to the gun shop for an ultrasonic cleaning, and followed the manuals lubrication guidance of lightly oiling the back of the rails on the frame.

With a clean and properly lubricated gun, a change in ammo, and paying more attention to not bumping the safety, I have not had the previous issues.

I hope you find answers to yours as well.

Jason

I'll definitely give the CCI Standard Velocity a try. Looking at the specs, the Federal I was using is a bit hotter. As for the trigger I don't think I was riding the safety because I'm left handed. I might try adjusting the trigger stop to see it that helps. Can anyone tell me if the rim of the seated cartridge is suppose to extend into the extractor cutout area?

Do you mean in the barrel or on the slide?

On my gun when a round is in the chamber it very slightly overlaps into the extractor channel in the barrel. In the slide it hooks under the extractor and the tip of the extractor just kisses the side of the round at the rim.

In the barrel. The Federal ammo I used did not appear to overlap the extractor channel at all..., at least those rounds that failed to eject.

Try some other ammo.....CCI standard velocity is a good bet. As for the trigger issue, try adjusting the overtravel screw behind the trigger.

Had problems resulting in too many lost points in bulseye due to ammo glitches in my 41. Now its CCI Standard Velocity only or I shoot my Ruger MKIII, it eats anything. The 41 is like a 52...great shooter but can induce heartburn in a second.

Anyone else having trouble with the second round being picked up from the magazine? This happens about 40% of the time. First round ejects and I'm left with an empty chamber. No problems with subsequent rounds.

Default Model 41 Sear

Hello, I am in the Cleveland / OGCA area and am having trouble with the hammer following the slide forward on my 60's vintage Mdl 41 A290XXX leaveing the pistol uncocked for the next shot.
The gun is in excellent shape and has many round through it. I assume a Trigger/ Hammer Sear is at fault.
I would like to get this fixed. Any help would be great.

I'm a dealer. I bought a new 41 in March of this year. Yesterday I had a person buy the pistol. First off let me say this: I've personally owned three 41's over my lifetime, but this NIB pistol has been a major disappointment. There are three issues with this gun out of the box. 1) It fails to extract more than once per clip (10 rounds). This issue seems to center around Federal Classic ammo. CCI, Winchester and Remington seems to function better. This is a problem that can be worked around. 2) The magazine fails to lock in - even with the bolt in the open position. After a few rounds, it comes unlocked and causes the gun to stop shooting. 3) This is the biggest one - after shooting, the safety will creep just enough to block the trigger and thus prevent the gun from firing. This is totally unacceptable. If you maintain down pressure on the safety, you can usually fire all 10 rounds in the clip.

For a gun that runs in excess of 1000.00 dealer price, this is a HUGE disappointment to me as a seller and to the buyer who now wants nothing to do with a model 41. It's going back to S&W tomorrow morning to hopefully be rebuilt correctly this time!
