Model 4004
Virtually nothing here about this model. I counted one page of threads where it was mentioned.
Basically a black 4003.
Anyone have one? How is the accuracy? How does it stand up to alot of shooting?
Anyone here actually seen one? In person? Thanks! Regards 18DAI.

I have only seen pictures of 2 separate 4004's. I have a permanant search saved on gunbroker for one of these, and haven't had a hit on it for at since I started it a year and a half ago. I would love to have the chance to pick one of these up, I'm just not sure it will happen anytime soon. I have seen a couple of 4044's up for sale, but didn't have the money to pick them up. I sometimes think a 411 is the closest I'll get to the mythical 4004 in the near future.

Ditto what Firebird said. I have only seen one in all my years of loving Smith 3rd gens, and that was at a gun show. The dealer wanted some serious money for it too. Like performance center money.

A quick search of Google brought up this pic of a 4004 that the owner bought back in August of 2010. The pic is from INGunOwners.com. I would post a link but that is against the rules IIRC.

The Model 4003's hold up quite well to a lot of shooting, so there is no reason to think a 4004 wouldn't. The frame material for both guns is the same, just the color of the anodized finish is different.
The 4006 was my department's first issued semiautomatic. They replaced 4 inch Combat Masterpieces/Model 15's. A few of the guys didn't like the weight and bought 4003's. One of them was a good friend and he shot his several times a month for 15 years before he retired. I would pull it completely apart and clean it once or twice a year for him and it was just fine at the end. I saw him a month after he retired and I asked him if he was going to keep shooting it. He said he never really enjoyed shooting handguns and gave it to a relative a few weeks after leaving. I expressed surprise and he said had he known I was interested, he would have given it to me.
While the 4003 and 4004 were made for the same amount of time (1991-1993), I have seen a pretty fair number of 4003's in person but never a 4004.

Thanks all!
I've had fairly good experience with the aluminum framed S&W's.
The only S&W in 40 I've owned was a single stack 4013. I did not shoot it that much, and sold it in the divorce.
I'm pretty sure a 4004 will hold up well for me. Now to procure one! Thanks again! Regards 18DAI.

After 4 years of searching, I just bought a 4004 off Gunbroker. I did the "Buy It Now" within about 15 minutes of the posting.

Is that the one that was $300, buy it now for $350? It actually made it 7 days the first time with no bid, and was bought on the relist. I wanted to buy, but strapped due to christmas. if that was you, congrats on a sweet deal. Gun looked great.

4004
Here is a photo of mine I lucked up on some years ago. I am not 100% certain but I am under the impression that less than 400 of these model 4004's were made. I am a hardcore collector of these 3rd gens and I can tell you that 4004's are among the most rare. I have only seen a couple come up for sale in the last 5 years. Hopefully somebody here can chime in with more information.

Thanks for the input. I too am an avid 3rd gen collector of the more rare/hard to find models. I'm hoping someone has submitted a letter to Mr Jinks (or who ever took his place) for info.
Cheers!!!
