Default Opinions...Model 659, re-visit with update and pics

Excellent condition....likely unfired...adj. sights...no box...two mags...

Book mentions a premium for "Interim" pistols (1988)..don't know what that is so I don't know how to tell?

Appreciate opinions as to market value...not sure whether I would keep this one or possibly use it for trade purposes...
***************************************************************
OK...Had to make some corrections to my original post above after having the 659 in question in my hands...

...fixed sights (not adj.)...and it does include the box...

Jim, if you see these pics, I now am assuming that this is a interim pistol due to the round trigger guard?

Also, was the 659 shipped with two mags?

Thanks all...

The 659 pistols do not have a large following, and prices suffer because of it. Most people want the third gen pistols for the dovetailed sights, and new style grips. I believe the transitional pistols were marked as 6590 using four digits, and had third gen frames, although I could be incorrect.
When I was searching for my 659, I saw many at $350 - $375, and going unsold. 639 pistols seem more desired, and more pricey.

Do not pay more than 300-325 for one of these. People try to sell them for 385-400, but the market will never support that price point unless it is NIB. Then it might sell at that price. That said, I have one in the safe that I can shoot as well as my 5906. I hate to admit it, but I like the 659 better. There is something about the second gen polished steel slide and frame that really appeals to me. My gun has the fixed sights which I prefer. Anyhoo, if you can find one in the low 300's, I say buy. You will not be disappointed.

not currently a "popular" gun

very unique appearance

not making them anymore

I say its a sleeper investment for when the day comes that folks realize, "Hey!... remember when they made those great big Smith and Wesson horse-pistol 9mm's with the gigantic rear sights!"

Well, at least I can hope for that day.

I want to like mine when it gets back from the factory repair.

I am surprised the Reservoir Dogs fans haven't snapped them all up. I know I want one in my collection some day.

I have also seen the 659 with the wrap-around grip like the 5906. Saw that on AA.

CDNN has the nice flat Uncle Mike's checkered rubber grips for the 659 (like in the picture above) for $8.99 if you're interested. Possibly the only case of a rubber grip actually improving the looks of a gun. Never was a fan of those plastics.

I like the 659's, don't mind the weight, they weigh the same as a Colt .45 auto and I don't see anyone complaining about them. Anyway, I know they don't sell well as I have tried to sell mine before and the highest bid I got was $300.00. I don't understand this because they are a great range gun and can be carried for self defense in a good holster. Mine has the round trigger guard and fixed sights. It is probably the most accurate 9mm I have ever fired and I have fired most of them in my day. Some day, you will be sorry you sold yours.
I like the 6906 almost as well.

That gun looks a lot like my S&W 645, which I love! It's heavy and huge, but it shoots .45ACP very accurately and with minimal recoil.

The 659 with the round trigger guard is not what is classed as an interim model. I have a round model and when I checked with S&W regarding this, as they are worth a few dollars more, they said this did not make it an interim model as they are marked with a different model number. I have two 659's and one is marked with a 5906 model number. It was made for the Pueblo Colorado Sheriff's Dept. I do not care for the high adjustable sights on most of the 659's as they remind me of a M1 Carbine sight. I was told by S&W, a factory rep, that they tried several different types of sights but none of them worked out, hence the high sights that most model 659's come with. I don't see why the Model 659 is not too popular because they are great pistols and I like them more than the 5906 which is also a good pistol . Excuse the ramblings of a 75 year old man who still shoots on a regular basis as I have for the last 55 years.

Default 659 revisited

Hi Duke,

The model 659/5906 must have been ordered by the Sheriff;s Dept. as it was and is identical to my 659 except for the following.
1. The one stamped 5906 has the same grips as the 3rd generation
5906.
2. I put a different safety in the 5906 as I didn't like the one on the
right side of the slide.
3. The barrel bushings on both pistols are identical as are all the rest
of ther parts. If I could post pictures I would show you them side by
side.
I failed to say that they are two of my favorites but don't take the place of my Model 39 (all steel) or my 39-2. I have been offered $2000 for the
39 but it is promised to one of my sons, the only son I have out of four that even likes guns. Of course the other three favor computers and stuff like that. Their mother's upbringing I guess as she likes those things too. I do have a daughter that likes to shoot pistols but doesn't want to own one.
Thanks, Duke for your comments.

Smile Model 659 revisited

I failed to mention the difference in my regular 659's trigger guard vs. the one I have stamped 5906. The one I got that was made for the Sheriff's Dept. has the round trigger guard but has the indent at the rear for the higher trigger finger position. It also has the combat trigger like all the later 5906's. I think this one was made up of left over parts as S&W is found of doing. I know I would use these parts up before starting with new frames and all. The 659 grips ,of course will not interchange with the ones on the 659/5906 model. I tried to install the 659 backstrap or insert as it is called in the model stamped 5906 but they wouldn't interchange There is a slight change in the insert's profile that wouldn't line up in the 659's frame. I like the one with the newer grips better but the Uncle Mike's rubber ones I have on the 659 feel and look better than the plastic ones in my opinion. Thanks again Duke, for your pictures. I wish I could show you mine and when my grandson gets out of school for the summer, I will try to have them shown.

I owned a 659 in the early to mid 80's when I worked with the Sheriff's Dept. in a north central Missouri county. I shot it very well scoring Pistol Master on the last FBI run qualification before a change in Sheriff's ended my service there.

I traded the 659 shortly thereafter and have always wished that I had kept it.

Yesterday, on the way home from St. Louis, my wife and I stopped at a newly moved gun shop near Barnhart. They had a very good++ condition 659 with adjustable sights and two spare S&W mags for $375.00. It is an A849XXX pistol with the round trigger guard.

I don't have pic's yet but I brought it home and it appears to have been shot very little.

Personally, I think it was a very good price. As for them not being highly sought after and not valued on the higher end like some of the other Smith semi's, I think people are missing the boat on them.

The 659 fits my hand very well and as I said before, I shoot them very well.

I will get pic's up tonight.

Within the interim models 659/5906 nothing is written in stone. There are three listed models 6590, 6591 and 6592. All of these are not necessarily marked as such. They can have an array of configurations within the same model number.
I have a NIB 6590. The box is marked 6590 and the pistol is roll marked 659. The frame has a square trigger guard with one piece wrap around grip. The slide has a removable barrel bushing, dovetailed front and rear sights and the safety has a phillips head screw on the right side.
I have a couple standard, if you will, 659's and a couple 5906's.
Both shoot and handle great. To me they both seem different in the grip. If I had a preference it would be the 659 only because I like the fell of the grips.
