Default 4006 CA Parks with the bear trade ins?

Anybody get one of the recent 4006 trade ins from CA Parks Service with the bear engraving?

No, but possibly next on my list, so I'd love to hear feedback as well. They look nice.

I bought one a few years back from forum member Grinder, albeit in much better shape than the trade-ins appearing recently.

They are basically a 4006CHP, which doesn't have the trigger free play spring installed by choice.

From what I've seen from the listings on Gunbroker, except for the markings, they are just like any other LE 4006 trade in.

Could you explain the free play trigger spring? I have had a CHP pass through my hands, although I did not shoot it and have been lusting after one of these CA State Park guns.

I too just bought one. There is a little (and I do mean little) holster wear on the top of the slide. Otherwise it was in like new condition.

It is a CHP spec 4006 with the bear and CSP laser engraved on the slide.

It came in the original SW box and was even wrapped in paper.

There is one now on "that auction site."

I like the bear image, but I shrink at the thought of having the word "California" on any firearm that would come into my possession.

If someone can get that one at the opening bid, it will be a good price. I'm surprised the mods haven't deleted the link to a live auction. That's a forum no-no.

If you look a round a bit there are several sellers that are offering them online right now. I'm considering one for my next full-size gun purchase, especially after I scored the last 5 4006 mags from CTD for $7.97 (I don't own a 3rd gen .40 yet, just know I'm going to get one eventually).

I didn't know they didn't have the trigger play spring. So, that is good info. Is there room to put the spring and rivet back in, or does it require a replacement trigger bar?

The spring and rivet can be ordered from S&W, and installed in the existing trigger bar.

But installing it is not a DIY operation unless you know enough to be able to detail strip the frame and reassemble.

This is good news, means it only needs about $10 in parts vs iirc about $60 for a new trigger bar.

You did? Good job !

I was trying to get home to bid at the last minute. We block access to "weapons" sites at work.

Well, I appreciate you not out-bidding me cause that was my max bid. I have waited a long time for one of these and this is going into the collection. On a side note, I will be placing another 4006, marked Sunnyvale DPS, up for sale in the coming days. This gun is in very, very good condition.

All you non Kalifornians always bagging on us but, you have no issue taking "our" guns? Thats just not right

That said, I love my AK DPS trade in 4006. Haven't seen any of the CA state park guns locally.

Not sure about condition though...
In this thread/ad: WTS ID: Smith & Wesson 4006 California State Parks 40 cal

There are a couple of pics of the higher priced "very good" $375 models (vs the $310 ones):

but I wouldn't have rated it as a "VG." Yeah, yeah, I know they are trade in's, but I am picky.

I was told a long time ago that the Parks folks essentially piggy-backed their M4006's off the state contract for the CHP guns.

One of the older CHP weapons officers for the state told me that while the original 4006's had the standard trigger play springs, at one point the academy gunsmiths eventually decided to do away with them. I was told they drilled out the rivet hole in every drawbar in every gun in inventory so a trigger play spring could never be installed again. Talk about labor intensive when you consider they have something like more than 9,500+ guns scattered around the state.

I have no idea if the Parks people decided to do the same thing to their 4006's, though. The drawbar would have to be checked in any specific 4006 in order to determine if it had been modified, or not.

My CSP 4006 doesn't have the spring, it makes the unmistakable 2 clicks on trigger reset. It is a VZD serial no.

I wonder how much extra California had to pay for the bear? Thats probably one of the reasonsthe state is broke and Jerry Brown wants to close down the State Parks!

Bud's had one on the used LEO shelf at their brick and mortar a few days ago for $350 I think.
You might be able to call store directly and have them ship it out.

As far as what you saw at Bud's, was it one of the old 4006 ones with the silver frame, or was it one of the new .40's with the black frame? They were just selling the new .40's with the black frame, and they sold out before I could get one online. Also, if you're close by to them, is there any chance you can stop by and check if they do still have it? I can PM you my info to pass along to them. I'd truly appreciate it!

I believe the Cali Parks iteration only came as a stainless model. I don't think I've ever seen a blued model.

Also, if you're close by to them, is there any chance you can stop by and check if they do still have it? I can PM you my info to pass along to them. I'd truly appreciate it!
