Default Model 41 Opinions

I've always wanted a 41 and saw this one at Cabelas. Sorry about the phone picture through the glass, but that's all I had. As you can see on the tag, they want $775, but I have a $100 off coupon, so for $675 plus tax, I thought it is a good deal.

I believe the serial number is on the tag; (2125166 possibly?). I'm thinking it's fairly new due to the printing on the side vs. rollmarks of old. Would anyone venture a guess as to the year?

I would like to put a red dot on it; do these come drilled and tapped for a rail generally? Also, is it a 7.5" barrel?

Is it worth it or would you wait for something older or newer?

Thanks,
Craig

If there is nothing wrong with it and it comes with at least one magazine it is a very, very good price if you can get it for $675. Around where I live they go for at least $750 to $950 used.

I think that $675 is a good price if it is in good working order. It looks like a newer gun so it should be drilled and tapped for a scope mount, just look at the top of the barrel for the filler screws to be sure. Cabela's often has a bit of room on their guns so ask for the best price and then present your coupon at the register.

Yes, it's a very good price. The new guns like the one you're considering are drilled and tapped. hsguy is giving you some sage advice on how to make your offer. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Default S&w Model 41

I have a 41 with a rear site like the one in the picture and it does not have pre drilled holes.
I looked at a lot of 41's and none with that type of rear site were pre drilled .

It cost me $70.00 to have it done.

Thanks guys for the info. I didn't realize Cabelas was "negotiable"; I'll give it a try.

So any thoughts on how old it is since it doesn't have a dovetail for the rear sight? Is that the right serial number? Cabelas usually puts in on the hang tag.

When I go back to look at it and get a chance to handle it, is there anything peculiar to 41s that I need to look for?

That is a 7" barrel which was introduced around 1978 when S&W discontinued the 7 3/8" barrel with muzzle brake (see my avatar above). That is not the serial number, but you can find it on the left side of the frame above the trigger. It should be three letters followed by numbers. It appears to be a 1990s or newer model to me.
