New problem with a used pistol that is in very nice condition. There are times (5-10%) of the time, when I start to squeeze the trigger, and the hammer does not fall on the rim of the cartridge. When this happens, I carefully pull the slide back a quarter or a half inch until I hear "something" being released within the slide. To continue shooting, I remove the magazine, eject the live (un-touched) shell from the breech, reinstall the magazine, charge the gun, and trying to shoot again.
Normally, the trigger pull is very smooth, and is followed by the hammer drop and "bang," but what I experience 5-10% of the time is this: with my sight picture established, and my finger on the trigger, I start to pull (squeeze), but instead of a smooth pull followed by bang, I feel the pressure on the pad of my index finger increase, and increase, until I realize that I have to stop, eject the round, and start over. To repeat what I described in the first paragraph, what I have noticed at this point is: if I pull back on the slide just a little bit, I hear something being released within it. I'm assuming that this is the hammer.
If anyone can diagnose my pistol's problem, or thinks they could if I could only answer some of their specific questions, please respond.
If I can't figure this out and remedy it myself, then I will contact Smith & Wesson and see about sending it in to them.
Thanks in advance.
