How many magazines do you have?
An old Shooting Times article by Skeeter Skelton cited a mexican jingle with lyrics praising the wisdom of a .38 ACP and three full magazines (Skeeter thought that meant three magazines in addition to the one that comes with the pistol.)
Assuming you're not parachuting into a taliban training camp, how many magazines do you find prudent to have for your S&W auto?

Sigma: 2 Extra
M&P9c: 1 Extra
But my Sigma is used for different reasons vs my compact thus more mags.

I'm getting all I can for my 6906 just because I can and I have a source where they are easily available. Right now I have 5 12rd mags and 2 15rd mags, and I've got 5 more of the 15rd mags on the way.

AMAP, as in, As Many As Possible. 5-10 makes me feel good, along with new springs for backup. I think I have 9 for my 4566. I usually carry the one in the gun, and two extras. If I need more than 25 rounds of 45, the S has HTF.

I have a total of over 100. I think the least I have for any handgun is 4, and 30 for my Sig is the most.

A good goal is a lifetime supply. Only you can answer how many that is, taking into account possible wear, damage, loss and future availablity the correct answer is "more".

While I don't have a S&W auto, my magic number for magazines is 5. I have four Glock's a 26,19,17 and a 34 I have 5 mags per gun. I have 3-33rd mags as well that fit in all the guns just for fun. One in the gun and four extra seems right to me for some reason.

I like to have 3 for each handgun, makes range sessions a little easier. I have 3 for my 2206 & 1911, and 4 for my 5906.

I have a few range bags that will hold 7 mags so I'm filling up.
So far:
6906 - 10rnd(1), 12rnd(4)
5906 15rnd (5)
CS45 8rnd(3)
4506-1 8rnd(4).

I have 16 or 17 12 round mags and 3 15 round mags for my 6906. A friend had 12 mags he no longer needed and I bought him a box of Sierra 69gr. HPBT bullets in exchange for the mags.
Everything else has at least 3 mags per gun.

I like to have five to seven mags per pistol. I have a Hi-Point (LOL) with only one mag. I have two model 41s with a total of about 14 mags. I really don't think you can have too many mags. It's a lot more fun at the range when you don't have to stop and load mags all the time.

I have an 5903 and '06 and a Marlin Camp 9 so have several mags for each, 3-4 I think. a couple are ProMag or some brand 30 rd that I've never used so need to get them out to check over, oftimes some of those need a little 'tweaking' to get to do good. MecGar 20 rd are fine, I have a couple.

I generally maintain 6 magazines per auto-loader except for my duty guns where I like to have 9-12 to rotate through. When I am actually on duty I carry 2 spares and keep 2 spares in my duty bag. After that I intend to be holding a shotgun or rifle and not a handgun. Plain clothes and off duty I only carry 1 spare (and of course a BUG).

On duty in uniform I carry a 4506 with five magazines (one in the pistol and four on my belt) plus a 649 .38 with five in the cylinder and a spare reload (Safariland Comp1) in a pocket. I wish it were practical to carry more but for me it's not. I still keep a select-fire Colt Commando 5.56 on the front seat and we each have eight magazines for those. 14" Remington 870s in the trunk with 100 rounds too.
For my normal everyday carry (plainclothes detective) I carry the 4506 or 4516 with three magazines (one in the pistol and two on my belt) plus the 649 .38 and reload.
I have about 30 .45 S&W mags for the full size guns and 15 for the 4516s. I have 30 for the 10mm S&Ws and maybe 15 for the 4006 series.....can't have too many magazines.

The magazine is the heart of an auto loading weapon. So . . .
I have at least 20 for anything that is primary. That means a Shorty 45 for me.

I'm afraid to count them. I have 3 to 6 for my plinkers. 6 to 12 for SD autos and (drum roll please) 110 for my 4043. I got a little carried away. If anyone needs 11 rd 4006 mags send me a PM. I think any auto should
have 3 mags and SD a minimun of 6. That said 110 is a bit much, but it was a good deal, I think.

I usually will have 1 for the gun usually a Glock 19 or 26 and an extra 2 for backup for personal carry. Gotta love my concealment vests cause it keeps that weight off by beltline by eliminating dual mag pouches but still very accesible when needed. I carry a Bodyguard 380 for backup in the inside pocket of the vest designed to secure another gun and 1 extra mag in the elastic areas for accesories inside the vest.
But the truth is you can never have too many for any gun!

# of Mags
M-52(x3) = 15. M-41(x2) = 6. Walther PPK = 5. M-952 = 5. M-39 = 3. No such thing as having too many magazines. Only thing is you never get you money back @ trading time. ;(

All depends. When I'm carrying my 9mm it's one in the gun and 2 extra, in .40 it's one in gun, three on belt. And in .45, it's one in gun, 2 on belt, 2 in cargo pocket. I always carry 5 spares in my patrol bag, too.

I likely have 50 for 1911 guns.
I have over 30 for Glock 22 (.40cal)
Three for Glock 27.
Five for Glock 17
Eleven for Glock 19.
Maybe 3 each for a dozen various type autoloaders in the gun room.
Just remember that a semi is a very expensive single shot handgun if the mag becomes defective or lost. Always have a spare available and I am not talking about carrying one around on you all the time. I am old enough to recall a several years ago when there were few mags on the market and those that were was being sold for super high prices.

For all my guns, I buy as many OEM mags as I can find/afford, especially the range guns. I also buy mag springs and Wolff spring kits for every gun I have, if they are available. I don't leave my mags loaded, except my concealed carry gun (of course). I also disassemble and clean my mags after every range trip.

Ill chime in here,,,
For my 4013tsw I have 5 total. one in the gun, one in the car, (carry on me) three waiting for the range.
I also want to 5 or more for the next gun I buy.
And since we are on the topic of mags, lemme ask ya this... Does it matter if you have the mag fully loaded, -1 round or empty for storage?? How often should ya rotate full to empty mags??

About 5 per gun. Exceptions are about 45 GI mags from when I had a gun for them and over 50 for the Beretta 92.
Fell into a deal on the latter thinking I could sell them for a small profit but have had no such luck so I suppose I'm stuck...or extremely ready

I have from 6 to 10 magazines for every semi-automatic pistol I own.
Depending upon which type magazine the pistol I'm carrying uses, I will normally carry one extra double-stack mag or two extra single stack mags.

Two for everything else I guess.

1911's use a "standard" mag so there are 25 @ 45 acp, 6 @ 9 mm, doublestacks vary between 4 and 9 for each weapon, and sufficient rifle mags for sporting activities. Each 22 LR has at least 5 -- loads 50 count box at a time. I guess I'm magged out.

Semper fi, BoingBoing
I find that I like at least 5 per weapon. Having more helps with drills at the range. I think I have 7 for my Colt .22 Conversion unit, for example. Less loading, more shooting.
During the long civil war in Lebanon I had occasion to visit the city of Beirut on behalf of Uncle Sam as a member of our amphibious forces a few times.
When going ashore on an errand, I would draw a 1911A1 from the ship's armory. They would provide two magazines with 5 rounds of ball ammo each. (Didn't want to stress the magazine springs, don't you know).
I would always ask for two additional magazines from the young gunner's mate. On my first visit he asked "Sir, why do you need all of those extra magazines?" What I wanted to reply with was "Well, duh! young man. Everybody over the age of 12 in Beirut has an AK with a 30 round magazine, that's why.", but I was able to restrain myself.
What I would then do is go up to my stateroom where I had a genuine Colt magazine and a box of military ball ammo. I would then top off all of the magazines and go ashore.
The Colt magazines were always more reliable than the contract magazines, so the Colt mag would go in the pistol as the first one up.
Today I use Wilsons in every 1911 I have, regardless of make, and so I have at least 12 of them floating around, but none are specific to any particular pistol.

Have or carry? I think it prudent to have "several" for a gun. Whether that is 4, 5, 10 or more depends on the gun, what you do with it, your wallet, your fears, and so on. You never know when one will be lost or damaged or replacement mags will become difficult, impossible or overly expensive to obtain so I feel pretty good if I have 4-5 mags for a gun. Since many of my guns use the same mags, I actually have a lot more than that in many cases.
Carry...my carry days began with a six-shot revolver and two speedloaders, with extra rounds in the car along with more meaningful armament for those unusual situations. To tell you the truth, only when I let my imagination get the better of me did I think I needed to carry more than 18 rounds on me. Maybe if I had been working in some remote outpost somewhere where backup would be a loooooong way off I would have felt differently.
Then came the ability to carry 7 or 8 rounds in the gun and another 14 on the belt and for most cops and claw abiding citizens within the U.S. it is hard to imagine that not being enough. (I don't find most double stack guns to fit my hand that well). I know people who think they need to carry 17 in the gun and another 34 on their belt and there are others who will double that. The chances of needing anything close to that are so small I see no point, but if they are happy then I don't care.
Not wearing a uniform anymore, a gun and one mag seems plenty to me. Now if I were working for the Gov't. in the Middle East, Asia, Mexico, South or Central America, doing drug interdiction in the Everglades or elsewhere, etc., then things would be different.

I have one 12 round mag and two 15 round mags with adaptors for my 6906, and three 15 round mags for my 5903, and four 11 round mags for my 4006TSW. Then 11 other mags of different size, for different pistols. Im still adding to the collection though.
