Default Model 41, should I drill and tap?

I have a model 41 built in the early 90s. It is in like new condition but is not drilled and tapped from the factory. I would like to mount a base and red dot on it. Should I find a gunsmith to drill and tap it for me? Should I by another s&w barrel that is already tapped? Do most of these s&w barrels drop in or do they require gunsmithing?
Thanks in advance for your opinions and info!

Welcome to the forum.

I'd keep the gun original and buy a second barrel.

Personally? You couldn't talk me into drilling it. Maybe a cheap 22A?

I wouldn't drill and tap your original barrel. I would buy a second barrel that is already drilled and tapped, then mount your optic or red dot. Then you can switch back and forth whenever you want. The new barrel should fit no problem.

Agree with above. D&T will run $15 to $25/ hole - and possible alignment problems.
