Default 4566 sa/da conversion?

I just purchased a 4566 from a gun show and was told at the time it was a da only and I was really in the market for a 4506but have found them hard to get around here so I settled for the 4566. since owning it I have looked online and found other 4566's with a sa hammer, on the day I bought the gun while sitting with friends we noticed it looked possable to convert over to a sa/da gun is this true? and what parts do I need and where can I find them? thanx

If you have a 4566 that has not been modified, it is DA/SA.

Here is a Model 4586 which is the DOA version of your 4566.
Notice there is no safety/decocker levers and bobbed hammer. If yours have the levers it is a SA/DA.

It sounds like you have the bobbed hammer. I think the 4566 was offered with both bobbed and spurred hammers, with the spur hammer more popular. As others have said, the 4566 was DA/SA so yours should be also.

You can check by racking the slide. If the hammer stays back then the gun is DA/SA. If the hammer falls the gun is DAO unless the internals are worn allowing the hammer to fall without pulling the trigger.

I must have the bobbed version and it is a DA/SA but what I meant I guess was after decocking with a round in the chamber the first shot has to be DA so I guess from what you guys have said I should be able to just get like a 4506 spurred hammer for it and it should fit right in right?

Yep, bobbed hammer DA/SA. Yours is a twin for the one on my belt right now.

Mine has the same serial prefix, just a few numbers later. Nice slick configuration for a commander sized 45.

Is yours decock only? The spurred 4506 hammer will fit.

I'm curious, why do you want a spurred hammer?

Nice 4566! Doesn't get any better than that in a S&W 45. Regards 18DAI.

My 4566 has spurred hammer and has the decocker only, once decocked it returns to fire position.

thanks, I was just wanting to have the option to fire first shot as a SA as the trigger pull is a lil long I'm not totally sure though I kinda like the bobbed hammer nice and clean look that way. and yes it is decock only but it has the lil detent hole machined in it so with the detent in the decocker it should stay on I would think. it is in great shape bought it from a dealer at the show who had several s&w's in a group overheard they were bought from one person. they wee asking $480 I got it for $425 and it has night sights, hardly any wear marks even inside on the slide I think it was prolly a safe queen.

Hmmm Now you've got me thinking (always a dangerous thing).

I just went through a 2 day tactical class with my 4586 (DAO), and although my trigger finger didn't complain too much with that much exercise, my accuracy wasn't what I'm used to with the DA/SA guns.

I'm thinking that a 4566 decocker-only with the bobbed hammer might be the best of both. I don't mind the weight for carrying (I'm pretty big myself), and I like the size. big enough to notice, and still small enough to be concealed with smart cover choice.

Maybe trade time...
