Default Removing rear sight on 4506?

Hello all:

I have a 4506. I think it's the second generation (?) as it was the first model to have the full polymer grips, as opposed to the previous model with the conventional metal mainspring housing.

In any event, mine has the simple, fixed blade rear sight. I've read here that there may be a slight difference in the width at one end, necessitating punching it out in only one direction. However, I did a quick measurement with some calipers and couldn't discern an obvious difference. Is there a known direction that I should punch out the piece?

Also, when I put it back on, won't it be a little more prone to slippage? Do I need to peen it a hair, or do something else? Or will the tolerance still be so tight as to not really matter?

Thanks!

Talking Rear sight remove

Hi, rear sight drifts left to right to remove. A good German silver or brass drift and a squirt or WD 40 helps Usually takes a decent hit to get it started. At the factory they are pressed in dry by machine.

Thanks so much! Just to make sure that I'm totally clear. From the shooter's perspective, it would be hitting it from the port side (L) TOWARDS the starboard (R). Correct?

Should I be concerned about looseness when re-installing. Or is that a non-issue?

Just finished the complete tear-down, refinish on the flats, and reassembly. Didn't have any leftover pieces either! ;-)

Getting the rear sight off and back on proved to be a cinch. Don't know why I was even worried about that.

Glad yours came off easily. My 4566 required a sight pusher and then was still a bear to break loose.

I guess I was lucky. I also didn't even use sensible tools. Just a small piece of wooden dowel, struck by a small tack hammer. But it worked, nonetheless!

I'll have to post some pics of the gun with the updated finish on the sides. It's quite a looker, if I do say so myself.
