Stuck with plastic guns?
I was kinda frustrated that my move to "return to metal guns
and ditch the polymer" was derailed by the discovery that the
908S that I just bought is not really all metal! Geez! And I
thought that the plastic MSH of my 1911 was bad enough!!!
Anyway, would anyone tell me where I could buy metal
versions of the following for my new/old 908S: PLASTIC
front and rear sights, PLASTIC trigger, PLASTIC mag
release and heavens know what else??? Thanks!
.

3913/3914
The same parts from models 3913 and 3914 should fit. Should be able to get those parts from S&W. There may also be some other sources.

Not true, I know the mag releases are different and I believe the sights are also. Are you sure the trigger is plastic? I think they no longer make the mag release in plastic, I order them from Brownells and they are metal now, but the mag catch nut is still plastic and have to be as they are a push on fit to the mag release.

My bad! I was so frustrated with the plastic sights and mag release that I presumed the trigger
is plastic, too, because of the "joint" in the middle section of the topmost part of the trigger.
But I ran a strip of refrigerator magnet and it sticks to the trigger.
But the mag release and sights are still plastic, though.

IIRC Novaks makes a set of metal sights for the 908. Regards 18DAI.

Thanks! I checked out the Novak site and S&W sights
are classified by "generation." What generation would
the 908 belong to? Thanks again.

The 908 is a 3rd generation pistol.
It was part of the "Value line", a series of pistols with less finishing, cheaper manufacturing, cheaper parts and a cheaper price tag. Sort of like todays current production S&W handguns - except for the reasonable price tag!
Most of the plastic parts should be interchangeable with the non value line models - in your case the 3913. I'd be surprised if they are not. Regards 18DAI.

I'm surprised! If the Value Line is meant to be sold cheaper,
why did they make a stainless version of the 908 (the 908S,
which is what I got)? I presume the 908S would cost more.
How much higher was the price of the 908S when brand-new
compared to the "blue" one, I wonder?

I called S&W customer service this week to order some pinky extensions for my "new" 908 mags....we got to talking about replacing the polymer parts with steel (3913) ones, but I was talked out of it, for now.
We agreed that if it ain't broke, don't fix it.....I can live with that....for now.

I just got a reply from Kevin of Novak:
"Sorry, we do not make sights for the 908."

OK, found some for you.
Trijicon - model TJ-AP-SWSA27-SA27
Meprolight - Product # 611219
Both are night sights for the S&W 908. Hope this helps! Regards 18DAI

Midway's page says "discontinued by manufacturer."
I might buy the Trijicon, but it's $140 +.
Have to save up for it first.
Thanks for all the help!

Not sure what they sold for new, but I recently bought a blued 908 for $320. On your list of plastic parts you failed to mention the recoil spring guide rod. The 3913 guide rod will drop right in. I still have the plastic one in mine.

I bought my 908S last Monday, for $375. It came in the (hard to open) S&W blue box with stickers that matched the gun's
serial numbers, three stainless and one blue mags, a metal guide rod (plus the original plastic one), the owner's manual
and the brown envelop with the fired case enclosed (dated 11-03-03), plus a Hogue rubber grip set (seller couldn't find the
original S&W grips, though. Bummer! ).
I bought my blued 908 back in 1997 for around $200, so accounting for inflation...
Since it already came with the metal guide rod, I didn't include it in my list of plastic parts that I'd like to replace anymore.
