Default Serial Number data base

Does anyone have a link to a source where You could type in a S&W serial number and get the approximate date of manufacture?

Or have a data base that will give the ranges of serial Numbers issued in a given month and year?

Thanks.

Not that I know of. You're best bet is to get yourself a copy of the "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson". It's an outstanding book. The 3rd edition is the latest.

I've also had good luck by just calling S&W...the customer service phone number is on the website. I've called and asked for info like that before and once I spoke to Roy Jinks directly.

No such database exists.

The Standard Catalog, though far from perfect, is an excellent reference source and is filled with lots of good information including a fairly extensive list of serial numbers. The 3rd Edition is getting long in the tooth though and I'd like to see a new edition published.

VYY2280 puts the pistol in 1996. This I got from the factory when I owned it. Model 5946.

Can you give me a range that would have pistol serial numbers in 1997. Say from April through December?

Okay, so this is what I was told by S&W.

The serial numbers are a matrix that run continuously and can be on any pistol manufactured.
So for example, a 4006, a 3913, and a 5946, could all be listed in numerical order.

According to S&W, the first group of Serial numbers starting in 1997 would begin with VZV.

Hmmm?
Well it's a start.

Information is scanty on the three-letter serial prefixs that Smith & Wesson started to use in March 1984.

The only info given on them in the Standard Catalog is that VAMxxxx was used in 1994, UAMxxxx was 1997, and VHNxxxx was 1998. As you can see, the letters weren't used sequentially which makes things even more difficult.

TVC ended in 91 and TZU started in 93, so you're somewhere in between.

Does anyone have a year for the EKY prefix used for the semi-auto Chiefs Specials? My CS40 Chiefs Special serial number is EKY7225.

You have to remember that the prefix letter were not used to completion or in sequence, or could be set aside for special production.

So, although you may be able to narrow it down, the best way to get a date on a three letter prefix is to call S&W CS.

Here's two of the same model and the first one
(THD)actually shipped before the second (TFM).

The factory told me that the labels are produced when the guns are getting ready to be boxed and shipped. The serial numbers are not necessarily in order because of this.

Are your boxes above 1991, or 2001?
Looks like April 12 for THD33 (1102)
and April 23 for TFM36 (1113)

I don't know about shipped but boxed and added to their available inventory, yes.

1991 for both and I agree on the dates.

THD was 'boxed' 11 days earlier than TFM but has a serial number that is, what, about 50,000 higher?

I just call S&W customer service for specific details. IIRC they quoted me a price of $50 for a detailed history on the weapon, otherwise the most they can tell you on the phone is the year and month of birth. It seems unlike other companies the S&W serial numbers were issued one step removed from total random.

I just emailed Smith and Wesson Customer Service to get the "birthdate" on my 5906. The reply I received stated it was manufactured in January of 2000. Kinda odd when it was my personal duty weapon carried from 1995 til 2000, and was used when I received it. Not sure how they manage their database. Guess I will keep searching.

Did what Boing suggested. S&W said my 4506 (TDD0xxx) was built 9/19/89 and sold the next day.

Default M52-2 numbers

I recently purchased a 52-2. The serial number is A769XXX. I called S&W customer service and was told it was manufactured in early 1982.

One thing I found out about your serial numbers and wanting to know when they were made:

(And we'll see who pays attention by the posts that follow this one!)

Your serial number MAY fall between others in a book that were made during one year to the next, BUT that doesn't mean your gun was made during that year.

While discussing my 3913 I found out my serial number was dated as an early one, BUT a call to S&W placed the ACTUAL manufacture date AFTER 3913's weren't made any more.

I found out my gun was made during a special production run for LEO's. Most were marked but mine is not. It seems S&W will just skip numbers and then go back and use them a decade later!

Keep this in mind if you really want to know when your gun was made, call S&W's toll free number and ASK THEM.

You may learn something kind of different and cool!

I read somewhere that S&W will give you the "shipping date" as opposed to a "build date". So it is possible for models to sit on their shelves for a time and then ship later on. If they have many of a certain model that they need to get off their shelves they may come up with a special promo to get rid of them......as most businesses do.

When I called S&W, they gave me the build date AND the shipping date. Mine shipped the month after it was built. So I'm just guessing, but my serial number falls in the range that were made for one group and laser etched BO###, but mine was sold a month later to a prison guard in Maine without the etching...

After perusing this thread, I come to the conclusion that there are many more 3913s out there than 3914s. Might this be a correct assumption or are 3914s just not as popular. I really like my 3914, but I notice not as many questions are asked about them.

It's probably easier to just spring for the SCSW 3rd edition. I recently put the Kindle edition on my tablet for $15.99 Well worth it if you are into anything S&W.

Serial # range for '84 - '85 was TAA1985 thru TAD9549
1986 began with TAK7879.

I would suggest you submit the request form I posted above on 01/02/13 and you will receive a letter containing the history of that particular model plus any information pertaining specifically to your gun. The cost is $50.00 and well worth it. Or you can call them and they will just give you the date.

Call S&W and ask for a manufacturing date. It's free.

Default SN date request

Hi all, I am new here and would like to know if someone can look up the DOM for my S&W M36, #2424XX. I know it has to be at least pre 1965.

OK..........forget it I called S&W and they told me 1960 was the DOM.
