Default Hawaii-Five-0

Hi!

I was watching an episode of (the new) Hawaii-Five-0 last night and noticed that two of the main characters are using 3rd generation S&W's. According to IMFDB they were a 5906 and a 3913 Lady Smith. Just curious to know whether the real Honolulu PD actually uses 3rd gen S&W's.

Thanks!

I believe the 5906 is still the standard issue for HPD.

Default HPD sidearms

Most, if not all the officers I have seen recently do carry the S&W 5906. Lived there for 12 years and have visited often. The HPD is relatively easy going and somewhat laid back so I don't know if they will make a move to 40 S&W like most mainland PDs have done.

Default Thanks!

Thanks for all the answers. My wife thinks I'm crazy but I've developed a real fondness for those 3rd gen pistols. In fact, I just got news that I won an auction for the next piece of my collection -- a like new S&W 1006 w/4 magazine, box & papers!

Whoo hoo!

I think one of the characters on Blue Bloods carries a 3rd gen S&W.

McGarrett carries a P226 in the episodes that I have seen, which makes sense given his Navy Seal background. Bob!

A blued M36 Chiefs Special was the first off-duty revolver I ever bought. It was also the first brand-new handgun I ever bought. I remember I paid around $85 for it.

Ok I'm confused and yes I know I'm getting into this wayyyyyy too deep and yes its just a tv show but ok I know its a new unit and considering its size there wouldn't be an issued firearm but... Ok Steve runs a Sig 226 due to his navy background and Chin Ho time a 5906 cause that's what he had on HPD, Kona runs a 3913 because I'm sure to the tv staff a 5906 looked like a monstrosity in her hands so they said close enough with a 3913, but as an HPD detective, shouldnt Dano have a 5906 too? He looks like he's running a glock or something close.

Are you talking about Dan-O? If so, I believe he had a SIG 229 in the first few episodes, now he's using an HK P30.

Sorry I edited that once. Damn phone. Yes dano. When he left his nj pd he was on he would have had to turn his issue weapon in. And upon coming in to HPD he would have been bound by their firearms policy and issue weapon

I couldn't sit through the first episiode of this truely inane program long enough to see the iron...

Didn't McGarrett slam shut a Dick's Special in the closing credits of the origional series?

I'm pretty sure I identified a "Fitz Special" Detective Special on Commissioner Reagan's nightstand - played by Tom Selleck, who knows his way around guns.

For the uninitiated, the "Fitz" guns, as modified by Colt employee and exhibition shooter F.H. Fitzgerald in the '30s and '40s, were primarily marked by the forward part of the trigger guard being cut away. These were usually snubbies with bobbed hammers and rounded butts, as well. Fitz's take on the modifications was that it made them faster to get into action.

I would not be surprised if the gun on the TV show actually belonged to Selleck. It would fit perfectly into the show as a legacy gun handed down from father to son for generations. Nice touch, really.

In one of the episodes grandpa tells the commissioner, I see you're carrying your grandfathers fitz special, you know you'd get a lot more firepower out of one of those semi autos. Commissioner says dad I have a lot of guys who can shoot for me, I like it. It gives me a sense of tradition.
I can't remember the proper quote but that is something close.

And yes I just read a headline that the fitz special is sellick's personal gun.

He (Jack Lord) was seen a couple of times with a Colt Detective Special, but, in the vast majority of the episodes, both he and his men carried the Model 36 Chiefs Special.

Regarding Honolulu PD arms, I think they're irrelevant. If I understood the premise (from the original series), Five-O is an elite STATE investigative unit, similar to the Texas Rangers. Is that right? McGarrett used to report to the Governor, not the mayor or HPD chief.

They'd probably have their own firearms policy, although TV may not follow it.

Spent a week in Honolulu working for the ProBowl. On game day, my staff & I had to coordinate with HPD (and others) for their communication exercise. I was in heaven seeing all those 5906 still in use!

In the original series, McGarrett carried his revolver in a shoulder rig with no back strap or any other visible method to stop it from coming off of his shoulder. I guess he could have used velcro (was that even around then?).

Right but the unit is a start up so I'm sure all policies are not in place and both Danny and kona are Hpd. Cause even after she was 5-0 kona still had to graduate from HPD academy (2nd or third episode cause they give her a KT pf9 as a graduation gift)
I know right now everyone is going "jeezus will you lighten up its just a tv show"
I used to bitch every episode of Detroit 187 b/c they were carrying glock and DPD had already transitions to m&p's

Donnie Wahlberg's character on Blue Bloods carries a 5946, which is one of the service pistol choices for NYPD. It's nice to see the 5946 pop up in the fictious NYPD, they always have everyone carrying Glocks.

Default Product Placements

It's gratifying to see the producers or directors of these series emphasizing realism over profit in their choice of weapons. I don't know whether Glock engages in product placements, but I know it's common for automobiles, soft drinks, etc. (i.e., we'll feature your product in our movie if you give us money ).

Of course, that's not to say that the plots, always, are all that realistic.

Yeah, but I recall seeing Dano driving a Mustang in the pilot episode. And I believe he was carrying a CZ P07 in one episode too. Dale

I dealt with the Chief and Deputy Chief of HPD a few years ago. They both had new Glocks. The Deputy Chief told me they were transitioning from S&W's to the Glocks because they were no longer available and getting worn out.

Worn out from what? Sitting in a holster?

I imagine the real reasons are 1) weight and 2) the perennial "need" for change.

Well, we still have the 5906...if we get a new pistol, I hope its the M&P, I think the Big Island Police have glocks, but not sure. I hear that the Sheriffs are going to the M&P.
Some of our pistols must have been in service for 20 years by now.

Since the thread kind of drifted to Blue Bloods, remember the show where Commissioner Reagan was shot and the family gathered at the hospital? Grandpa was wearing his old revolver, with the grip wrapped with rubber bands. I was impressed with the accuracy, because when I first started in law enforcement back in the '70s, there were no Hogue handalls, and a lot of the old coppers used rubber bands to create a palm swell and better grip on their revolvers...

I really figured that I was the only one that tried to determine the handguns of choice on movies and tv shows. I love it that others do as well. Keep up the good work!

Hell I know some old cops that still do that with their off duty gun.
