Default Help! Why can't I disassemble my 39-2?

I just got a 39-2 in a trade. It only came with two mags,
and no manual nor papers. I went online looking for help
on disassembling it and this was what I found:

1. With safety on, remove the magazine from the weapon.
2. Cycle the action (pull back and release the slide) to eject any round still in the gun.
3. Pull back the slide until the slide lock (on frame) is under the slide lock notch (on slide).
4. Press the slide lock pin (sticks out of the right side of the frame) inward, toward the left side.
5. Remove the slide lock lever from the left side of the gun.
6. Release the hammer forward gently.
7. Pull the slide forward until it comes off the frame.

Reassembly is pretty much the same process in reverse.
NOTE - The 39-2 has a decocker instead of a safety. When you pull back the slide
you must line up the pin end of the slide lock with the slide lock notch.

----------------------------------------

I guess it's the "you must line up the pin end of the slide lock
with the slide lock notch
" that gets me a little confused...
the notch is quite wide! Which end do I align the pin end to?

Bottom line is I've tried the tip of a Sharpie pen, the end of a
wooden handle of a small hammer to try and push the pin while
holding on to a "frisky" slide that's under spring pressure. All to no success!

Hi

The slide only needs to come back about 3/4" to get the pin to line up with the notch.

I usually use my left hand over the top of the slide, web between thumb and forefinger propped against the rear sight pushing the slide back, and left forefinger wrapped around the backstrap. It's fairly easy to get the slide to move backwards the required amount. You can use some additional support from the right hand to get the slide moved, then retain it the proper position with the left hand.

Then the right hand can push the pin out part-way, grab it and pull it the rest of the way out, then control the slide and hammer drop as you relax your left hand.

You are starting this process with an empty pistol, and the slide fully forward? I have the safety off as well.

This is hard to talk through - it's such second nature I had to think a bit about how I do it.

On re-assembly, there are a couple of levers that need to be pushed down into the frame to let the slide pass over them. Something non-metallic works as a pusher if they fight you a bit.

The slide stop lever is under pressure by a spring loaded plunger that presses up on it from the trigger, and it can be stubborn to move.

When you are removing the lever, don't be tempted to wiggle it up & down while pulling on it, or you will quite likely end up with the classic "idiot scratch/mark" on the side of the frame.

For the disassembly, line it up so it looks like this:

YouTube has some helpful disassembly videos. Here is one for a 915. Same procedure.

A common mistake is made when people line up the slide catch slot with the pivot pins catching end,

The notch in the slide should be lined up with the pivoting shaft (forward) end of the take down pin allowing the take down pin to pass through the frame by pushing it from the opposite side.

I would add that when you pull the takedown pin through the frame you can wiggle it to help it come through the frame but be carfeul not to rotate it in a circle or the end of the pin will scratch the finish...
Happens on 1911's as well.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Still, nothing beats the old "show and tell"
method of teaching! That first photo showing
where the slide notch should be aligned to the
slide lock was what I needed (since I've been
so used to a "separate" notch in a 1911 slide)!

After that, the slide lock came out, albeit "grudgingly." Hehe!

One sour note: I forgot to "ease the hammer
forward" and it snapped rather forcefully! I was
afraid it might have cracked the frame, but it
didn't, mercifully!

Thanks again, guys! You made this 39-2 newbie
ever so grateful to you and to the forum!
