Model 39 serial number range
Howdy! I have a pristine Model 39, SN 84181. I believe it is an alloy frame. Any help on dating it would be greatly appreciated!

It's just beyond the serial number range for the last batch of steel frames, so it has an alloy frame.

That is probably going to be either 68 or 69. S&W didn't ship pistols in order of SN or production, so you really can't get more accurate without a factory letter.

Thanks Tom, So mine being a 374xx would pre-date Sep-63 somewhat?

i10fwy - because of the way batches are processed your specific M39 may have been shipped earlier OR later than those I show. Think of a box with 100 frames - first in - last out - then - on the ship shelf - first in last out. Net result numerical order does not indicate SHIP order which is what S&W/Jinks supplies. On slow moving items there may be 2-3 years difference. Remember rule 1 of S&W: There ain't no rules.

I'm also considering buying a S & W Model 39 with the serial number 399XX - can anyone tell me when this gun was manufactured.
Thanks,

Rainbow452,
Welcome to the forum! I'm pleased to give you your first "like"!
According to the SCSW it appears the gun you are considering is from the 1977-1978 period making it a Model 39-2. Some positive changes were made from the Md 39 to the Model 39-2 which might make it a bit more desirable than the Md 39.

Model 39 Info Search from New Member
Have a 39-2 I believe (alloy) purchased it used I think in 1967, markings are Mod 39, and the serial No. is 62,XXX. I don't think it was used much, in great shape. I have the S&W Bible, 3rd edition but could not find anything matching the serial number to any year. There are no letters preceding or in the serial number. Anyone have a clue or know where I can research short of the $50 to S&W? Thank you, I have enjoyed reading through this thread and many others - Milrose

You have a mod 39, no letter preceding SN. A 39-2 would have an A in front. I have a m 39 dated 1966-1967 sn 67xxx

Hi all,
New to the forum as well. After reading many post on the age of model 39s I understand there are no certain dates in relation to serial number but after the readings I make the assumption that a serial number 878xx will be around 1968? The reason I ask is because there is a model 39 with that serial for sale with the original box, papers, cleaning rod and one mag for $900 and I will like to know if that is too much. The gun is in good condition. Thanks in advance.

878XX possibly 1968 but very likely 1969 - remember things are NOT consistently shipped in SN order. Jinks/S&W for your ship date.

Welcome to the Forum Mr. Tex. There are a lot of 39-2 lovers on this site you are among friends for sure. Welcome aboard from Nebraska. I keep an eye out for 39-2's on Gun Broker and there is always at least a page full of them. On the front $900.00 does seem like a bunch of cash, I have seen several for $500.00 to $600.00 range that are in pretty good shape. I think you could probably beat the 900 number and get the shooter you are looking for. Good Luck. Wiz

At $900, I would stop and look. Would I buy, I dont know, to many factors to consider. I was working a show last week down here in SoFo with my
FFL buddy. A dealer had a LNIB Mod-39 in his case. I stopped and asked the price, reply was 3. I asked 3 what? His reply was 3000.00. The medics
arrived and I was OK. I kept walking. Good hunting.

Put a magnet on the frame. Sounds like a steel frame. I have Sn. 63037
as a steel frame shipped Fall 1966.

A couple months ago I found a LNIB 39-2 for $600. Appears to have never been fired.
A few weeks later, I found a very nice 39-2 at a local pawn shop for $300. If you're looking to shoot it, you can do lots better than $900. If you are a collector and you wan't one "unfired", $900 still seems a bit high.

Well....since this thread has been resurrected by others, I don't feel too bad about asking since I've not seen any near my serial number being commented on. I have a Model 39 with the serial number 1059XX that I would like to know the approximate date of manufacture. Thanks in advance for your time.

Hi there,
I picked up a model 39 a few months back, and I was hoping I could get a little information about the date of mfr. Serial is 109258. Someone put dang pearl grips on the thing. I need to find some originals.
The SA reset on these guns is ridiculous.
Thanks!

I know this is an older thread but hoping someone still checks it out. I have a model 39 handed down from my grandad and was hoping to get an idea of the manufacturing year. S# 86xx

Hello ewms, I have Sn.8000 shipped Feb. 24, 1959. This is not a mfg. date.
S&W recorded ship dates in no specific Sn. order. A nice early mod-39.
If you shoot it, only chamber a round from the mag. It saves the extractor.
Good shooting. Mike

Welcome aboard, ewms. I'm sure lots of folks would be interested in learning more about your early (from the very low serial numbers) Model 39. It is sufficiently special that you might want to start a new thread for it and post pictures - see instructions in stickies - we love photos here.
My personal heirloom 39 is a Model 39-2 from my Dad... I'm sure yours will be well loved in your family. I'll give the you the same advice I give to anybody in a similar situation, write down everything you can about the gun and its connection to your grandfather. When and where he bought it, why he had it, any adventures or misadventures he might have had with it, that kind of thing. Your children and grandchildren will appreciate your effort and the gun even more.
Regards,
Green Frog

Thanks for the great info and helping me learn a bit more about my model 39 gm and frog, it’s greatly appreciated since both my grandad and father have passed away so I’ve lost any access to information on the pistol.
Great advice on documenting what the guns been through for future generations, I’ll have to make a note to do that so that the history isn’t lost to the next one who has it.
I’ll also check out the rules on creating a new post for it and get one up so others can enjoy it as well.
Thanks agian

A22oXXX Dec. 1973
A1285XX Apr. 1971
Of course these are est. from my ship date data list.
Get a SDR or a Letter. Sometimes these guns hung around for a long time from mfg. to being shipped.

Nickel makes it worth more. Serial numbers ran from A175001 in 1973 to A235000 in 1974.

Can anyone help date my model 39
My brother recently passed away and I have inherited his model 39, the serial number is only 4 digits starting with 62XX, any ideas?

Hello james, sorry for bro passing. Happened to me last year.
His 62XX is an early mod-39, 1958 ship date. Do me a favor and tell me the configuration of the follower of the magazine. thanks, Mike
PS pics are great.

Not sure what you mean?
I don't know a lot about guns, I do know it has an anodized aluminum bottom and steel upper, black. Let me see if I can upload a photo. My brother was an MP in the airforce in the early 80s and I believe he acquired it back then. I'm not seeing any way to add a picture , if I'm missing it somewhere please let me know.
Thank you for your condolences

There were quite a few Model 39s in that SN range shipped in 1969 to the Army and Air Force Exchange. Why they were shipped 10-12 years out of sequence is a mystery. Might your brother have bought it at the BX?

So, is it safe to say that 5746 should be around 1957?

I would say 1958 is more likely but these pistols (like many S&W) were sometimes shipped way out of sequence so the only way to know for sure is to letter it.
