I was in a lgs today and ,city gun and pawn.I stated to the owner that the older smith semis are drying up around here.he said that is because they are junk.I said really why is that.he said its because the extractors break all the time.I asked if that was all the models. he said no only the 9mms.I said well I have a 6904 that I shoot IDPA and carry daily and it works perfect.he then said well its mainly the 5906 that were junk.I said oh not the 12 shot 6900s then.he said smith just couldnt get it right that is why no law enforcement agency carries smith & wessons anymore just glocks.I just said oh ok. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha what in the world.where did he come from russia. a bigger crock I have never ever heard.

I have to agree with your lgs. Smith semi-autos are not worth owning, that being said, and in the spirit of living "green", if you would all box up your Smith semi-autos and send them to me, I will make sure they are recycled into something useful.

You should have him just give you any S&W semi-autos when he gets one in trade, since they are such terrible guns he shouldn't risk his reputation by selling one to unsuspecting and unknowing customers.

sw44spl,

I missed the fact that you are also in North Carolina, you have to post or PM the name of the shop. I will make sure to wonder in sometime. I love to spend time with the firearms experts in our midst.

he is also the same guy that told me one day 2 years ago how the beretta tomcat 32auto is junk and it wont fire half the time.that he wont take one in because he assumes it wont fire.I said wow I carried one for a year as my backup and it shot and worked great not a hickup and I put hundreds of rounds of different ammo through it. and I looked in his gun case and there sat a blued tomcat .

A lot of bad info comes out of lgs's. When I go into gun stores I like to look around and listen at what is being said. So much bad info. There is good info too but those who don't know will be swayed by bad info from so called gun experts.

Gunstore commandos, gotta love em.

Usually I hear; "yea those S&W pistols are junk...well except for the M&P."

When they start telling me how nice the plastic junk is, I feel compelled to humiliate them. 100% of the time they have neither owned nor fired a 2nd or 3rd generation S&W pistol. 90% of the time they have not actually fired the tupperware gun either.

But they always have a cousins brother in laws nephew who has. Regards 18DAI.

S&W semi-autos are garbage. If you have any you want to get rid of just send them to me for proper disposal. I'll even pay shipping

Gentlemen,

I see a win-win situation here for you and the store. Of course all of you are right. I usually think I am so why shouldn't you? That you are as unlikely to change the store owner's opinion as he is to change yours is not the only reason it is not in your best interest to try.

I hope you don't mind my bringing a revolver into the wrong forum to explain how I see it. I ocassionally go in a LGS that, at least as far as handguns go, may as well be a simi-auto store. The only exceptions are 5 shot snub-noses, mostly Taurus, and the ocassional larger revolver taken in trade. I once watched the owner tell a would be seller that no one wants a .44 magnum and they could only be sold in the week before the high-power deer season opens. Consequently, he could only offer a price that allowed him to make a profit reselling a .44 magnum at a price that would be an "obvious buy it now for the odd ball revolver shooter that probably won't wander in anyway". The would be seller left with a grimice and I silently with a smile. About a year ago I wandered in and found a different .44 magnum priced like no one would want it except for the odd ball ... me! I never tried to disuade the owner from his negative opinion of big .44 magnums. I just paid his asking price and left with a minty 5.5" Redhawk, 2 HKS speed loaders, and very nice holster and speed loader pouch for $350 OTD, and for frosting on the cake, I'd swear it had a profesional trigger job.

I hope the store owner continues to hold his opinion for a long time.

Best Regards,
Gil

SW44SPL, that is one of the funniest posts I’ve seen in quite some time! And to think in all of my 3rd generation Smith’s I’ve NEVER had any extractor issues and I can’t even begin to think of how many thousands of rounds I’ve put down range. The former Mecklenburg County Police here in Charlotte carried 5906’s before moving up to the 4046 that the Charlotte Police were already carrying back in 1993. During the time the 5906’s were in service I never heard of a single extractor “breaking” and again we are talking thousands of rounds through those pistols.

BJJr1966, your post was also pretty funny. And had the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police known you were into recycling metal framed pistols when they transitioned to the M&P’s they could have saved a bunch on shipping. When we transitioned to M&P’s back in 2008 all of the surplus pistols that weren’t purchased by individual officers were shipped all the way back to Springfield where the pistols were once again mailed off to be recycled by a distributor who then re-sold them to new adoptive parents, I mean owners. You would have been MUCH closer!

Lgs in my neck of the woods are fun places, many guys in there are helpful, and like to talk guns, and dont talk like they know about something unless they have had experience with it. But some are not that way. I think some times guys are just trying to sell something and will say any thing to do it. One time i was in a shop, and the guy behind the counter was trying to sell a Romanian PLS to a guy who wanted to know the difference between it and a Russian SVD, his answer there the same rifle ***, oh well i just chuckled to my self and left.

forsmithers yeah CMPD were the first to issue the 40sw I think. we went from the 686 to the 4046dao then to the glock22. but that guy at that lgs never has any used S&W autos from 1st,2nd or 3rd gen.he does carry the new M&Ps.the lgs across the road they are alot nicer and dont try to tell you something that isnt true.they will tell you they dont know if they dont know the answer.they have a 4043 there that I have been eyeing.

Let me guess...the stuff he has available for sale in his store is all better quality than, right? He only buys the best to resell to his customers.

I think a lot of that goes back to the feed problems the original 59s had back in the early 70s. My dad and a friend of his owned a gun store 71-73 time frame, and they had some problems with 59s they sold. They closed the gunstore in 73, S&W fixed the problems with the 59s, but my dad, until very, very recently would say Smith autos were junk. It wasn't until he fired my 5906 he said "this is a nice gun." Now he is hinting at getting one.

I also worked in three different gun shops, over an eight year period, during the late 80's to mid 90's. Unfortunately, you used to hear a lot of trash talk from customers, and some salesman, about Smith autos. I have always like the 3rd Gen series. I think S&W got it right the "third" time around, but it was bad timing, being in direct competition with the Glocks and other "radical" designs of the time. The thing that sold me the most was another employee I worked with was a retired LEO and certified Smith armourer. He showed me everything he knew about the 3rd Gen autos, how each part worked in detail, etc. His department carried 4506's at the time he retired. He was also the first person I knew who owned a 4006. I remember him always going on about what a great round the 40 S&W was, and that was at a time when most stores didn't even carry the ammo. So, I will always have that man to thank for me being a Smith nut.

As for your local gundealer's original statement, he sounds like the type of salesman that whatever he currently has in stock is the best and what he does not have is junk.

he is not a glock dealer nor is he a glock armourer.and he has a odd selection of guns.he is just plain and simple a know it all.I went in one time in uniform and asked to see a renickel Victory model. he asked if i had a permit. because he dont let anyone see a gun with out they hand him one. I said my job is more important to me that to run off with that dam pistol. he gave me a speach how he cant trust anyone.I guess I missed the news where there was gun stealing cops on the lose.
