My New (to me) Model 39!
I was just at my favorite LGS in Clackamas, The Gun Broker. They had a blued Model 39, no dash, ser.#868xx, about 95%, with original box and instructions. They were asking $399. It came home with me! My first S&W auto, and I'm pretty pleased. I had been leaning towards another BHP, but couldn't pass this up.
Pictures later!

Where's the "this thread is useless without pics" animation????
If I ever came across a 95% 39 for less than $400, I wouldn't last long....

I'd say you got a good deal on a great semi-auto and a piece of S&W history.
I don't think you will ever be sorry you bought it.

Okay, a couple photos of my purchase yesterday. I got out and shot it today, and it shot just as expected. About 1.5" at 15 yards, offhand, and no hitches whatsoever. Except with the ammo I put through it, American Eagle 115 gr., it shot about 5" low at 15 yards. Aside from trying a heavier bullet, does anyone have any thoughts about how to correct this? Does someone make a higher rear blade to replace the existing one?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Does it really matter?
Ball ammo practice load.
Shoot it for groups, or add Kentucky windage, and call it good.
Shoot heavier ammo if you plan to shoot it competitively or if you REALLY need to carry it as a CCW piece.
Considering that any self-defense shooting is likely to be at EIGHT FEET or less, I doubt the sight regulation issue is any issue whatsoever.
You need a better camera more than you need new sights.
I love my 39's
They're my knock-at-the-door-late-at-night guns.

Very nice find for $400. I just bought one made in the early 1970's for $399 at Gander Mtn. It's near perfect with the box, etc. I also had a problem with another Model 39-2 except that it was shooting about 4" high at 15 yards with 115 FMJ. I filed the rear sight down a bit and now it's about 2" high. I bought an extra Model 39 rear sight blade at Midway USA and I think they still have them. Lots of luck.

Great Gun - Great Price
I bought this same gun about 4 years ago. I love it!
It only came with 1 magazine (8 round) and am thinking of getting a couple more. Any idea where to find these magazines or is there something compatible? This site S&W Model 39-2 magazine said that a current 9-round magazine (#20075) would work and only protrude slightly from the well. Have any of you went this route, and if so, any problems?

You do know that part of the 900 steel framed models were found in the 80000 range? I'm sure the gun shop checked..but ya never know...
