S&W or Ruger P95 twin auto set?
Hi to all, this is my first post here but I have been around for a while. Nice place you have!
I have one 915 and would like to complement it with another auto. I would like them to share the same magazines to simplify things.
The options I have are to find a used 59 series or another 915, or to trade the 915 and buy two new P95s.
I have shot the P90 in 45 and liked it, but never a P series nine. I have been asking and reading some and even when the Rugers are solid and well built they seem not to be recognized by their starling accuracy. But then neither my 915 is superb in that department.
So what do you think? Do any of you sport this two (or more) auto and same magazine combo?
Thankīs in advance for your input!
Regards:
Schnellboot.

Multiple guns of the same make, type, caliber, finish, etc? Sure...it's just another symptom of the affliction. Later on you'll be looking for different guns that go with the decor in your house. In your case, I'd go with another 915...easier and probably less costly than trading it off and trying to get into two new guns. Then again if you like the .45 there's the Denzel Washington Training Day 4506 option, or the Bruce Willis Last Man Standing 1911 option. So don't limit yourself...you may find that having just one set of paired up pistols isn't going to be enough.

A friend just bought a P95. They are a highly underrated pistol built like a tank. Probably one of the best buys on the market too. You should shoot one at a rental range and see if you like it.
Although to be honest I am a big fan of 3rd Gens. To be mag compatible you might consider a LEO trade in 5906. They should be in the same price rang too.

I would base it on how they fit your hand, and any financial benefit one way or the other. Both are ridiculously reliable. I put about 5500 rounds through a P95 years ago with absolutely zero malfs. If the Ruger was a decock only that might make a difference.

I agree with you, I have been checking the P95 an looks and feels strudy as the P90. The trigger is ok and the safety decoking lever works just as well as the one on the 915. The mag release button is quite stiff out of the box but it may get better with use. Points well but feels a bit bulkier than the 915. Shoots without the mag as oposed to the 915. Metal surface of the mags could be better finished.
Itīs notable how wide it is over the slide release lever area.
What do you think about the 915? Itīs just a cheaper version of the 59 series because of less refinements or just an inferior gun?
Iīve been told the 59īs are capable of good accuracy. My 915 does not make things easy for me.

I don't see how you can go wrong either way. I don't have a P95, but have owned a P89 since 1996 and it has been a great gun. Bud's has the P95s for $300 shipped.
On the other hand I love my 5906 and CDNN has LE trade-ins for $300. Since you already have the 915, this is the way I would go. If you want to stay with another 915 or 910 there are some on Gunbroker for less than $250.

The hands down biggest nod to the P95 IMHO is that the extra magazines if you are stocking up will come much cheaper than any S&W magazine. Short of one time deals, I can’t even find Sigma magazines cheaper than $35 each not including shipping.
But the S&W 915 should have better resale, better accuracy, and I just prefer all metal guns to half plastic guns. Being a discontinued design though is never a good thing for longevity of parts availability, service, or much in general.
With the intro of the Ruger SR9, I can’t help but be curious if the P95 is going to get the axe just like the P90 did. Perhaps a better vs. would be a Sigma/SD9/M&P 9 vs. a Ruger SR9/SR9c.

Thinking about your replies, the suggested way to test a rented P95 seems clever. I would really be tempted to let go the 915 if the Ruger would let me group better.
Right now the best groups I can do off hand at 15 yrds with the 915 are 2" in a good day if Iīm doing my part, but thats with reloads and after some development. Factory ammo sometimes drives me nuts. They tend to group around 4" regardless of brand and weight, and I always get a flyer, something that proved to be rare with the P90 I mentioned before, but that may be a matter of gun and caliber combination.

I sold a 5904 so i could get a 5903, same gun just in SS. So it would match the 6906 i was also getting from the same place, they can use the same 15 round mags, they also have mag adapters for the 6906. So i know what you mean when you say you want twin or matching pistols that use the same mags. I have been thinking about Ruger P-series for some time, iv looked at a KP-91DC a my LGS. I like pistols that have slide mounted safty/decockers, just my thing. I also like the Beretta to. As for the P-95 I dont know im not a big polly fan but for the price, and i am shure it is a great pistol, just not my thing. Good luck.

I had a P95 and it was a good gun...not great, but good. It always worked, not a single malfunction, but I could never get over the creep in the trigger. Ended up selling it. Now I've got a S&W 59 and 6906 and it's a match made it heaven. I love my 6906, makes a great carry gun, and I have my 59 just for fun and have a bunch of mags for both.

I like the 915. IIRC the differences of a 5906 to your 915 would be: nicer finish (seems like they had less tool marks), stainless steel frame, ambi decock/safety, 3dot sights, front strap checkering and two mags (well originally anyway).
I think I would give a slight nod in accuracy to the S&W's while a slight nod to the Ruger in terms of sheer ruggedness. Not much help, no? At least you can't go wrong with either.

I agree with this on all points, my ex had a P89 and I still have one on my list for eventual acquisition, great guns. In fit and finish I think the 3rd Gens beat them, but in function it's a draw (in my opinion).

Did you REALLY just ask if folks would rather have two Ruger P-95's over two Smith and Wessons on the Smith and Wesson forum?

In my opinion, if Ruger was inferior to S&W anywhere it would be fit and finish. Ruger prides itself on well made and well designed guns. I love my S&Ws, but Rugers are great guns too. For a low cost gun I love my P 95. Rugers service department is light years ahead of S&Ws.

Was issued a P89 BUT the P89DAO version. Totally turned me off to the P89. Later they were starting to be replaced with the P95DAO as I was getting ready to retire. Shot my last qualification with the P95DAO.
Having said that, the Ruger P family are well made, accurate, injection molded/investment cast guns. They are more top heavy than the metal framed S&Ws and the slide sits higher up which all adds up to slightly more felt recoil and muzzle rise on the Ruger.
If it was me, I would get one of the 5906 trade ins and not look back.
