5906 Good & Bad?
I just picked up a 5906-seems like a good deal to me. I went out and put 100 rds of winchester thru it and no problem. Seems like a heck of a deal to me. They are a little heavy but other than that?

They are a wonderful deal. It took me a minute to realize that the weight is offset by the balance. When in use, the recoil is minimal so it comes back to point of aim quickly. I've had mine for less than a month and discover more to like each day.
Congratulations on a fine choice!

Can't go wrong with a 3rd gen pistol... discontinuing them is one of the biggest mistakes S&W has made in recent times in my opinion... but then they might make a resurgence, just like when they dropped all blued revolvers from their catalog a few years ago and then added them back again due to demand.
What else is the to say that hasn't been already mention on this forum... built like a tank, feeds just about anything you can stuff into a magazine.
There is one thing that does come to mind since parts are starting to become a bit difficult to get... the trigger free play spring is the weakest link (lots of post about this on the forum) in the 3rd gens, since they are cheap enough I'd probably order one and the rivet just to have it on hand.
When that spring breaks, while it doesn't affect the overall operation of the gun, it sure makes the trigger pull feel really ****** with an annoying CLICK accompanying it.

Following the good advice of members of this forum (thanks again for that), I bought one a week or two ago, used but in perfect shape. I could take it to the range for a test ride, with a few boxes of light home-made lead 120gr RN reloads. As told, it digested all of them without the shadow of a failure.
The gun is rather heavy compared to the so-called plastic wonders, but this is one of those guns of which you immediately feel as if it’s part of your body : the grip feels perfect, it’s recoil is PLEASANT, and has that look & feel that makes you confident – it means business ! And keeping it in mint condition must be easy being all stainless steel. Being used to SA auto’s, I had to get familiar the trigger, which is light and perfect compared to other DA autos I tried before.
So good luck from another happy newcomer in the 3rd gen S&W autos – B686

Glad you are enjoying it. I certainly am enjoying mine. And to say they are heavy is an understatement. They are tanks. Gotta love the lack of recoil as well.
