Why, Dammit? 59 slide stop in a 39-2
Pawn shop has a 90%ish 39-2. It has a couple freckles on the slide and a few minor scratches. Other than that it is in decent condition except someone has replaced the slide stop with one from a 59. Just don't look right with 3/8ths inch of pin protruding from the right side of the frame.
Time to check Numrich to see if they have a proper one in stock.

Seems like it would be easy enough to cut it off.

First I must have been asleep when I posted this otherwise I don't know how it managed to end up in the long gun section. Perhaps one of the mods will be kind and move it.
The thing that I was worried about was if the dimple in the pin that the detent in the recoil spring guide sits would be in the right place. I took the one out of my 59 and tried it in another 39 and it will be ok.
Looks like I'm on my way to the pawn shop.

My guess is that a previous owner had a 39 and a 59 and maybe cleaned them at the same time... It is easy to intermix parts when they look pretty much the same. Although... the slide stop for a 59 would be a little too short in the 59 frame and as you know, the 59 slide stop in the 39 sticks out too far.

some of the first double stack 9mm's are found with what appears to be a short slide stop, barely protruding on the other side. I left those alone. I'm assuming in the very beginning of the double stacks they used a standard 39 slide stop, perhaps only notching the detent a bit differently. That detent mark should tell you if it is correct or not regardless of the length. Similarly I have found many later single stack 9mm's with what appears to be a slide stop that seems too long, but these were purchased brand new. If it "locks" in at the proper place, I'd say leave well enough alone.

Could be the slide stop for a no dash 39, they stick out quite a bit, the 59 slide stop is quite a bit different than a 39. The 39 slide stop has a " flat top", the 59 is round.....also, if it is an early -2, it probably came with a no dash slide stop. The early dash twos had some no dash features, like the hole in the hammer...

The slide stops for Model 39s that were grooved for the dust cover stuck out on the right side farther than other 39 slide stops. The dust cove fitted around the right side of the slide stop to hold the dust cover in place. At one time I had the figures for the amount of protrusion for the two different 39 slide stops but can't find it now.

Update on this since it has recently come back to life. The 39 in question was in the glove box of my car when the wildfire came through here a few months after I bought it.
I never did get a final determination on if it was an original for the dust cover or a replacement.

Wow, not that it matters now, but from what I can see, it is a correct early slide slide stop, they did stick out quite a bit. What a bummer.....
