Default Model 52-2 extraction problems.

Hi folks
Having some extraction problems with my model 52 -2 that I am hoping to pick your collective brains on.
The pistol will fire fine and then randomly jam with an empty case in the breach, when this occurs the pistol is left fully cocked and with the next live round partly stripped from the mag and jammed against the back of the fired case in the breach, making the mag hard to remove.
When it first started I found the tip of the extractor was chipped so I have made and fitted a new extractor finger. I have also lifted my powder charge slightly in case it wasn’t cycling hard enough, but so far no success.
What I do not understand is, if it is ( as I thought ) the empty case being blown back out of the breach that pushes the slide back and cycles the pistol. How does the slide get cycled with the case still in the breach ? Or does the 52 operate on a different principle.
Thank you in advance for any help. All suggestions will be much appreciated.
Dave

Based on what you are saying, the problem seems to be very localized to the extractor.

The slide cycles by blowback pressure which should push the case back and the slide. If the extractor hangs onto the brass long enough for it to clear the breach, the case should be ejected. If the extractor slips off prior to clearing the breach, the brass could stay there and the slide would still cycle.

I have been fighting my newly purchased magazines for months now so I have been doing a lot of cycling of the slide by hand to watch the process with dummy rounds. If you have tested your new ejector by hand cycling and all works well, I would trying doing it faster by hand is possible.

Another thing I would check is if you brass is in good condition - after it is fired. If the brass gets a bulge, that could cause the brass to move a little ways our of the breach, then get stuck too.

The 52 is a finicky gun, when it is working happily, it is very accurate. When it is in a "mood", it is enough to drive a man to drink.

Chris

Hi Chris and thanks for the response. I have just loaded 100 rounds with some new brass which I will try next weekend.
What I find so frustrating is the gun has run reliably for years, with any old brass with hardly a jam, now it will jam 3 or 4 times every mach. Will also buy another bottle of scotch.
Cheers Dave

Do you have these problems with standard, commercial ammo, or only with your reloads? If you haven't tried it, maybe you should.

Hi Armyphotog, and thank you for your input. Thats not something I have tried yet but was speaking to a mate today who said he would bring me a box of factory stuff into the range. Sowill let you know if it makes a difference when I try it. In the mean time I have put a quick thirty rounds reloaded with new brass through the gun without a jam, not enough to prove any thing yet but maybe the rims on my old brass have seen better days, it has all been well used,
Dave.

Hi folks, looks like the problem might be solved. I had a very helpful pm
From a member ( Mike ) pointing out that if the lips on the mag got loose,
and allowed the next round to sit up a little at the front it can trap the spent
case in the breach pulling it out of the extractor and cause the problem I
have described.
I have closed down the lips on the mag and put 50 rounds through with
my old brass and all looked good.
thanks all for your participation its been a great help.
Dave
