The Model 41 I had completely forgotten about
You know you're getting old when you find a gun in the safe that you didn't know you had. With a little memory ransacking and paperwork inspection I realized that I had bought this one a few years back from the range where I usually shoot.
The A-prefix serial number dates it to the late '70s. [ADDENDUM: I am informed that this pistol actually shipped in June 1980] The box label has the same serial number but makes no mention of the 5.5" barrel; this was sold as a 7" pistol. There is a separate small sticker with the printed code 1950, but I haven't found that as a kit or package code for a two-barrel sales unit. Also, the foam liner looks too good for 40 years old. I wonder if the shorter barrel was a later purchase along with a foam insert that would let both the pistol and the alternate barrel reside comfortably in the original box. No tools or paper came with the package when I picked it up.
I don't think I ever fired this. I should get to the range soon and try it out. I have long heard that 41s can be finicky until a few hundred rounds have gone through them, and I appreciate all the info in the current thread about ammunition preferences, chamber smoothing, and alternate spring sets for problem specimens. I like the weight of the pistol in my hand, and I look forward to comparing its performance to a Ruger Mk III target and a Colt MT (second model, 1949) that are also in my safe.

I don’t think they ever had foam like that or a two barrel set.
Check that foam as it can hold moisture and rust that fine weapon.

Hello David
I've seen the later versions of the M-41 with the same foam so the package could be right with exception of the second barrel and cut out for it.

Thanks for the caution. I keep dehumidifier packs in the vicinity of all my guns; the foam is dry and the gun with its extra barrel are rust-free.

Thanks, Sam. I have seen 41 boxes with raised cardboard floors and cutouts for both the pistol and the extra barrel. Maybe if I had spent as much time with the pistols as I have on revolvers I would know more about their packaging.

Yeah, I thought that too when I was pushing 70. Now I’m looking at 75 in a few months and wondering what 80 will bring!

S&W used that foam for a short run of Model 52 boxes in the 1980’s and the 41’s and 52’s used the same size box so it stands to reason that they used that foam in 41 boxes also. I can’t say about the two cutouts however.

As a point of reference on the foam interiors, my 52 dates to March, 1978, and I know of another that dated to October of '78 that was also shipped with a foam interior.

I have boxes with the foam insert both M52’s and the M41. I’ve seen SN A482XXX through SN A700XXX with the foam. I’ve never seen any boxes with the cutout for an extra barrel.

Andy, I hate to tell you, but it does happen. I found a 34 Hand Ejector 3" (Pre 30) the other in the box stacked in all the empty boxes. I had to check my records to remember when I got it. But, I'm getting closer to 80.
