Model 439
I've had a 9mm model 439 for some 20 years now. I absolutely love this gun. Can someone explain to me if this is an M&P or Sigma. All I see on the gun is Model 439, Serial # starts with A775___ . I'm trying to buy some rear Laser sights for this and I want to get the correct fit on the first try? Also, what generation gun is this from the 39? Any help would be appreciated.

Taterch,
You own a Smith and Wesson second generation 39 series gun. The 439 has an alloy frame and blue steel slide. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-8/1059823/439.jpg Other members of this family are, the 539, which is all steel with blue finish, and 639, all stainless steel. Your gun is neither a Sigma nor an M&P. Those are different guns entirely. |
I would add that by the serial number range you give, yours is a pretty early 439 at that. Unlike the one pictured, I'd bet yours has the older style rounded trigger guard.

Yes. Some of the older 439's also had the wide extractor. |

All i can add is that i have a really accurate one, if that isn't the case for the entire series?
The 439 fits the hand perfectly, the trigger is OK. Accuracy with the Hornady HAP 121gr over 4,3gr N320 was around 3 inches @ 25m, overall very good for this class of pistol. Will shoot it less often so to keep it in good shape :-) |
Thanks for helping me win my bet!!! Now, would you know if there are variances on the width of the rear sight between my 439 and the M&P and Sigs? I'm looking for a laser to mount on my rear sights and all I'm finding are sights for the M&P and Sigma models. I hate buying online and returning products without being sure they will work or not. Any advice on what sights may work???

Yes it is.

Neither the M&P nor Sigma rear laser sights will fit a 2nd gen. From the various catalogs available to me I have yet to find any one making a laser for them. Crimson Trace makes a grip laser for the third gen and newer, nothing for the first or second gens.

How do you spell "envy" ?

I believe this is the Second generation Smith. The 39 was the First, then the 439, 639 and the Third was the 3904. I owned a 639 stainless and have just purchased a 439 version. I also own a 6904, which is a 3", 12 shot auto. Not sure about the laser sights.
