Default new barrel for 915

Hello,

I'm looking for a new barrel for my 915. Smith's website doesn't seem to have them. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

I got my spare 910/915 barrel at GB. There's three of them up for auction now. I got mine from the Arizona seller. He was fine to work with.

Thanks, Guys.

Brownells doesn't have it (at least online they don't).

About GB, wouldn't you be a little nervous about getting a used barrel? What if somebody got killed with that barrel and eventually ballistics found a match with you! I don't think I could ever trust somebody's used barrel.

1. Why would a ballistics test be run on the used barrel unless it was part of a criminal investigation involving the current owner?

2. If you have documentation that shows the date and source of the used barrel, the investigation would point back to the seller, not the current owner.

Numrich has 910 barrels listed for 131.80 and say that quantities are low.
Numrich Gun Parts Corp. - The World's Largest Supplier of Firearms Parts and Accessories

I'm guessing that the 910/915 barrels are the same?

Numrich/GPI also lists the factory part numbers so you can compare them. I'd expect that it would be the same barrel for both, possibly the same barrel for any 4 inch 9mm.

Here are parts lists and they have different numbers for 910 and 915 (there are 3 listed).

http://www.smith-wesson.com/wcsstore...ist_Retail.pdf

Someone with more experience may be able to step in here as far as the barrels being interchangeable. Or just call Numerich or S&W and ask.

A ballistics test would be run if I had to shoot someone in my own home, and then someone else's dirty barrel could bite me. Seems like such a risk to take considering you could be really screwed if you lost the sale paperwork.

Thanks Dave. I see the part numbers at Smith are different for the 910 and the 915 but they run about $125. I guess my best bet is to get one from Smith.

Oh, and um, just showing my ignorance, Smith's website shows "Model: M915". I'm assuming that's the only 915 they have, right? There's no "M" on me heater.

Don't know why they do that, but you're right, just the one 915.

If you contact S&W I'd be interested in hearing what they say about barrel interchangeability. One of the barrels listed obviously comes with a barrel bushing but as far as I know none of the 3rd Generation Smiths had a barrel bushing.

I doubt that I'll ever need to replace my 915 barrel but I'd like to know j just for future reference.

Thanks, Dave. Ya, I don't need to replace my barrel but since it's such a sweet piece, I don't want to be "wishing I would have" in 20 years when I do need one. I might get another firing pin as well. I've been in survivalist mode considering the economy and politics and so just looking to prepare for the worst where I recognize it is a possibility. Being a citizen of California precludes me from the right to own what I want to own; the government wouldn't let me get a Kel-Tec because I live in California and every other state will support that so I can't even go to Arizona to purchase it; my vintage 17 round magazines for my 915 are illegal to purchase anymore in Ca; so I figure soon enough it will be illegal to buy a barrel and firing pin for it as well. A coupley-hundred for some peace of mind now is better than a thousand when I'd have to replace it with a new gun, if that will even be possible in the future.

Boy, glad I live in Colorado! Open or CC no problem.

Don't know if you've got lots of experience working on your firearms but there's quite a bit of info on the 3rd Gen S&W along with the earlier generations.

I always like to know how to tear these things apart for future reference. I consider that part of being prepared. Do some searches here and see what other parts you might want while you're ordering.

...you sure know how to rub it in, don't you Dave!

That's a good idea but I wonder how many hours I'll need to search to find good recommendations in all the posts. Hopefully someone can weigh in here or put up a link for what parts should be replaced at that point.

Before getting to this thread I had no idea that so many people thought this was such a cool Luger and that it was only made for about two years before the pinko lobby cancelled its ticket. I remember when I bought it I was just looking for a sturdy 9, didn't want no plastic glock, and it was relatively inexpensive being a Smith, not pretty compared to what was out there at the time, but I think it looks pretty darn good now.

I'm not even really into guns although I have six, don't shoot much but like to have something for as many purposes as I can. I even just found out what parabellum means, pretty cool.

Thanks for the thoughts.

I was able to order one from S&W, $140 delivered. They are still manufacturing them, interestingly enough, but I thought I'd get mine before they pull the plug on it.

Default new barrel - sort of

Well, I received my new barrel and decided to make sure it fit, and sure enough, it did not. The hood on the receiving end was about 40% too wide and would not fit into the slide. Called S&W and found out that my barrel is a revised barrel and is not currently being manufactured, and it may or may not ever be again, considering the limited production and age of the gun. However, the rep was very helpful as he had previously worked in production for many years, and he got together with his buddy and figured out what I could do. The new barrel is identical to the revised one except for the hood. He informed me that I could file away the excess hood if I was reasonably careful and then it would work just fine. Of course there is not warranty then, but it was an option instead of having no barrel at all. The other option was to return it for a refund. So I'm opting to keep it as a project piece when I have time and make it work. Not what I expected, but at least it is better than: "Sorry, too bad". I guess I'll post again after it's complete (or ruined).

Sorry to hear it won't work, but at least you have a project to work on.

Go slow and take pictures. If you do some searches you can probably find info on barrel fitting. You might want to buy some polishing stones to do the final finishing.

Good Luck!

There was a useable 915 barrel in a pile of rusted 915 "parts" on Gunbroker last week.

Check on Gunbroker, it should not be hard to find a 915 barrel there. Regards 18DAI

OK, I finally got it done. Now I'll try to upload the pics. If it comes up. that will be the picture before any grinding, the new barrel with the oversized hood is on the right.

All right, it worked. Here are the other pics after the job was done. I took a little too much material off but it wasn't critical and it didn't seem to care as you'll see from the target shots to follow.

Then I got it to the range. Haven't had the 915 running for at least ten years. I think this is good but I don't really know what's reasonable to expect since I don't shoot much. These are my best shots after warming up for an hour or so.

This is a 9" plate with a 5" "inner circle". Ten shots at 30', deliberately slow. Since I became fairly consistent at 30', I moved the rest of the practice out to 50'.

This was 10 shots at 50'. I completely missed the plate with the first DA shot and the following 9 were SA, all slow and deliberate. I don't know why but I seemed to be the only one using the 50' distance; everybody else was staying at 20' to 30' even with rifles. Maybe they don't like to miss.

This final target was five "rapid" fire shots at 30' although it wasn't really that rapid; the range requires 1 second intervals and I probably had 2 second intervals.

Anyway, the barrel job worked out well and now I'm actually shooting better than I ever remember and having too much fun. I guess I'm going to be shooting more often now!

If you want more 17 rd mags, Midway is suppose to have them instock sometime after April 3, 2014. It seems like a long wait, but worth it for a couple extra rounds before reloading.
And I hope you enjoy your 915. I love mine. Just got it Christmas. Always thought the mod 59 was best.. I know the 915 is the "value" model, but not a whole lot of changes from the 59.
