Smith 22A vs Walther P22
I want to get back into frog gigging and need a way to do this one handed, and the thought of a .22 pistol has crossed my mind. I just had surgery yesterday (owww) and a facing a long recovery. Since using a light is legal, I am thinking of mounting a light to a pistol, and either a 22A or a Walther P22. Can you mount a light to either?

The P22 has a dustcover rail that can be used for mounting devices. It does not however fit standard devices, it's a Walther proprietary rail which means you will have to buy the Walther laser/light to fit.
Someone may make an adapter, not sure.
Have fun and be safe.

I've seen your posts leading up to surgery; here's wishing you a speedy recovery. Sounds like you're ready to go out and hunt for a delicacy. Good luck on both counts. TACC1

The Walther SP22-M3 has standard picatinny rails on top and bottom but at almost $500 you might just go with the walther with the walther light....

No experience with the Smith, but my P22 shoots like a house a fire. Adj. Sights, decent trigger, interchangeable backstraps, and great reliability. Nice gun for the money. I have several Streamlight TLR1 LED weapons lights, and they are outstanding in their quality and brightness. They come with 3 or 4 adaptors to allow fitting to most any makers rail system, though I don't know for sure if the Walther is among them (I never save the instructions). The light is about $100.00, and worth it. I use one on my .204 bolt action for night coyote hunting.

Actually, I had two. The first one had about 3k rounds thru it. Never malfunctioned. A retired, handicapped buddy of mine liked it, so I gave it to him. He shoots about a brick a month thru it in his back yard range, and it is still working fine, several years later. My second one, with about 5k thru it has never FTF, not once. How many have you owned, and what problems did you have?

Mine has been great, too. I would guess 1200-1500 rounds of flawless function.

I've had a P22 for six years that I use in steel challenge matches, never had a single malfunction.

The problem with the P22 is the slide is prone to breaking. Walther America will replace them under warranty, but I'd rather avoid the hassle.

no issues with over 2000 rounds in my P22 except for my ignorance in clipping the hammer spring too close so i had to replace. mine is suppressed still no issues with sub sonic ammo, hollow points, nada! i did do a quick fluff and buff when i first cleaned it but it fed so well that the feed ramp just needed a shine to it. shot it this past sunday 200 rounds along with my 22a-1, 300 additional with it, and neither one had a problem. had one stove pipe on my M&P15-22 but it was not seated correctly, my bad.
now on to frog gigging.......loved to do it back in Indiana growing up with either a trident gig or a pellet gun and a head lamp. I'm thinking once you have them shined you would need a red dot of some kind to keep in sight. the P22 can accept just about any light. take to your LGS when buying. I have an XML on mine. you can add additional 'rails' to the underside with a dremel and a cutting bit a little smaller than the rail of the light that you are putting on. just lay the dremel bit across, start slow to make an indentation and then hog out until it is deep enough. mine takes the XML and the TLR1-s.
Shoot silenced if you can have a can (LOL) in your state. or use CB caps at about 500 FPS pretty quiet and accurate and can kill a cat, just don't ask me how it happened.
i would say go old school with a bb/pellet gun and get them legs.

Nice gun (P22)but the slide cracked on mine after 12-15K rounds. Twice (~25K second time). It was replaced under warranty both times. And that DA trigger is terrible! But it's reliable up to 500-1000 round before cleaning depending on what I shoot. It loves the federal bulk packs. I'm getting a Ruger to replace it and its going into the safe until I move back to one of the free states, where it will get a can attached.
I always take it to the range for that guy who is introducing his girlfriend to shooting with a big bore auto...
