Default Need help with 645 issue

So I traded for a 645 as part of a deal and now have a question. With the slide off, it will double action and single action with no issue.

When I put the slide back on, the hammer will stay cocked only if on safe and will fall as de-cocking when taken off safe and will not DA.

So before I haul it to a gunsmith - what am I doing wrong? am I putting the slide back on incorrectly? Is a magazine required to be in the gun? If so, all my 45 mags don't work so is there a difference with the mags from a 1911?

Thanks in advance...

The 645 is equipped with a decock safety, meaning that it drops the hammer when activated. It also has a magazine disconnect, meaning that a magazine must be inserted in order for the trigger to activate the hammer. Yes, the 645 and 1911 magazines are different.

Unless I'm misreading this, or my hat's on backwards, the OP says it's operating the opposite from what it should?

Your answer confirms what the OP seems to know what is correct decocker action, but his isn't doing that. I don't have any 2nd Gens but you're not saying they work opposite of a 3rd Gen are you?

The OP needs to clarify "and will not DA." Is that with or without the magazine in.

I understood him to mean that the hammer stays back when the decock lever is in the up position, and falls when moved down. As it should.

I've been trying to duplicate the O.P.'s issues with my Model 645. My pistol was bought new by me and it's never been to a gunsmith or bubba'd.

"With the slide off, it will double action and single action with no issue."

With the slide off my 645 frame, and WITHOUT the magazine inserted, I can pull the trigger in DA. In SA, once the hammer is cocked, It wont fall unless the magazine IS inserted. So, right off the bat the O.P.'s pistol has an issue.

"When I put the slide back on, the hammer will stay cocked only if on safe and will fall as de-cocking when taken off safe and will not DA"

When I re-install the slide onto the frame the hammer stays cocked and will not fall unless I insert a magazine and pull the trigger or activate the safety which will decock the hammer. I can't duplicate the O.P.'s issue with my pistol so it definately has issues.

"all my 45 mags don't work so is there a difference with the mags from a 1911?"

Reading this I figured no way a 1911 7 round magazine will even go into the magwell. Well, I was wrong. A standard 7 round 1911 magazine not only goes into the magwell, it get's locked in place by the magazine release. However, the 7 round 1911 magazine is quite a bit shorter than the 8 round Model 645 magazine and will not chamber a round.
