Default Ambi controls

There have been a few threads previously about slimming down 3rd gens by removing the weak side controls.

I never really considered it as I carry IWB with really no problem with the ambidextrous decockers, etc.

After something that happened this weekend- I've even more convinced it's probably a nice idea to have ambi controls and to practice more weak side one-hand shooting (and holtering/unholstering)....

I had a freak accident in the kitchen when a large chef's knife (and I keep them very sharp) started to fall/flip towards me after getting caught on the edge of the slot in the knife block, when I was pulling it out. I instinctively shot my right hand over to catch this object, and the tip of the knife went into my palm at the base of my thumb about 3/4".....

5 stitches later after a trip to the ER (it was amazing how much blood was pouring out and how hard it was to stop it - fortunately I'm pretty good with first aid and my wife is a Nurse Practicioner) I had a very sore hand and realized it will be pretty hard to shoot right handed for a few days. Also thank God that it appears no nerves or tendons were damaged.

What do most of you think about ambi controls and weak side one handed practice? Fortunately I do practice occassionally one handed with either hand. But up until now I haven't given it a whole lot of serious thought as to needing this skill.

Glad you are OK! An aquaintance did the same thing, but was less fortunate. He has severe nerve damage.

As a lefty, I'm pro ambi safety!

Yes, it is important to practice with your weak hand. Very important. I recall back in school the firearms instructors told us stories of incidents where officers were hit in their strong hand during gunfights. We were required to show proficiency with our weak hand, unsupported.

We also shot from awkward/unusual positions as well (prone/prone looking up/back sitting/squatting)

We also were trained to reload our pistols one handed. Skills it is important to have - whether you are a cop or not.

You might try some IDPA matches in your area. While it is a game and not training, it is good gunhandling practice and FUN! Every match I've attended also had at least one stage where you were required to shoot weak hand only. Hope this helps! Regards 18DAI.
