Default is there 3 gen guys who prefer steel?

I have been on a tear with 3rd gens
I picked up a really nice 4516-2 with box etc
I was going to post in classifieds WTT for a 4513
Is there members who would prefer steel frames?
Just curious what to expect?

Thanks Hank

I have a 3rd Gen. 9mm and like the steel to hold down the recoil. Plastic is nice for CCW but I live in the confused state of Illinois, so CCW is not an option. The prices are right also.

I see a lot more 4516's for sale than 4513's, I believe this is because they made a lot more 16's and/or because 13 owners tend to keep them. The compact alloy frames are desirable for CC, the mid and full size not so much. IMO you would have better luck if you were willing to trade for a 457 or 457S which are also great guns and a lot more common than 4513's.

I like the steel guns for fun on the range, but when carrying, I definitely prefer the alloy frames. I find the weight savings more tolerable for all day wear.

Same here. I like both types of 3rd gens (a lot), and prefer either alloy or steel over polymer any day.

My current two go-to 3rd gens are a mint 5906 that I mainly use for range work, and if needed, for home defense. My daily CCW carry is a 4014 with alloy frame.

Next I want a 3913 or 4513 for sure, and then I want an even better choice for all metal lightweight carry - a scandium framed 3rd gen 4040 PD. If I can't find one of those LNIB/NIB I'll probably bu the 1911 e series scandium bobtail.

The all steel guns aren't too bad for OWB carry. I definitely prefer the alloy framed guns for IWB.

I have several 3rd Gens. They are mixed steel and alloy. I prefer the steel models but I don't carry either. I would not make a lot of difference in either but for range shooting I like the steel.HECK I just like all 3rd gen.

I have one in each caliber and mine are all steel. Stainless steel, that is. I prefer the weight and durability. Don't concealed carry any of them, so the weight isn't an issue.

Out of all four of my 3rd generation only my 4566 is all stainless steel. The others I have are 5904, 3913, an 909.

I like all 3rd gens, regardless of what they are made of. During the cold months I will carry my 1066 in an IWB holster without any problem as the extra weight tends to become less noticeable after getting used to it. I don't carry it during the warm months due the the fact that lighter clothing tends to print the larger frame over my 4040 and not because of weight issues.

On another great note about the SS 3rd gens, they are even more tank-like than the alloy framed models and will run forever as opposed to nearly forever with the alloy framed versions. Either way you go you will end up with a great pistol.

Also, I really enjoyed my 4516-2, it was a great gun, and if I were a .45 guy, I would probably carry that instead of my 1066 or 4040.

I had a S&W 5904 and it had a pronounced muzzle flip compared to the Steyr M9-A1 I now have. Metal, plastic doesn't matter as much as how low the muzzle axis sits in your hand.

Well I agree that the steel is best at the range I dont carry often but I like to be able to and the Alloy makes me think I can

I guess that settles it I will be delighted to keep the 4516 and will be on the hunt for a nice reasonable 4513

When I had to send my 642 in for repair, my 4513TSW no rail became my EDC. You can keep your heavyweight.

my favorite 3rd gens are the single-stack 9's. I've got 4 - all aluminum frames. I stay on the lookout for a good deal on a 3906. I'd LOVE to see a 3916!

Ah, The Riddle of Steel . . .

Quote:
“...And the secret of steel has always carried with it a mystery. You must learn its riddle, Conan. You must learn its discipline. For no one - no one in this world can you trust. Not men, not women, not beasts. (he points to the steel) This you can trust." ~ Conan's Father, Conan the Barbarian

"Crom is strong! If I die, I have to go before him, and he will ask me, 'What is the riddle of steel?' If I don't know it, he will cast me out of Valhalla and laugh at me." ~ Conan, Conan the Barbarian

But . . .

"What is steel compared to the hand that wields it? . . . Contemplate this on the tree of woe." ~ Thulsa Doom, Conan the Barbarian

That said, alloy's okay, too.
