Default model 52-2 recoil spring

Hello,i'm new here as a member but have been reading in here for awhile, lot of information and nice ppl.
My dumb question is that i bought a used 52-2 last saturday and taking it apart i noticed that the spring is tapered on one end and the smaller end is facing the back of the barrel,is that correct?I called wolf and they said their springs are the same on both sides.I bought one of these, new, along time ago and like a idiot,i sold it and can't remember the proper way the spring sets on the recoil rod.Does it even make a difference? Thanks.

cyber,

In viewing the AGI S&W-auto armorers DVD, I don't remember any mention of a specific fore-and-aft spring diameter variance. The example shown did not seem tapered. Upon re-assembly, 'ol Bob just stuck the spring on the guide, he didn't seem to pay much attention to either end, as I recall.

Numrich has an exploded view that doesn't seem to show a smaller/larger spring-end.

Regards,
Mike

Usually when one end of the spring has a smaller ID at one end that is the end that goes on the guide rod first. The tighter ID keeps it on the recoil spring guide rod during assembly. At least that is the way it was on my 52-2 (and several other pistols) when it had the original recoil spring. I replaced it after 30 years with a wolf spring and it was the same on both ends - no taper.
