Cool S&W 1006 Grips - OEM vs. Hogue Rubber vs. Hogue Rosewood >>

Hello gang,

Unfortunately, no targets were harmed in the production of this posting. That will have to be another day, work kept me late, it was raining, and I had some trouble fitting some of these grips. Soon, I promise!

The first set I tried on were the S&W replacement curved hard plastic grips. I could not for the life of me get the mainspring pin to back in the hole with these grips.

I tried everything I could think of, but no go!

Here is a picture of the original flat hard plastic grips on the left, and the new curved replacement grips on the right. Maybe one of you experts can spot something I missed!?!

I guess I'll have to send those back! I hate it when you wait for something cool to come in the mail, and get ****!

Next I tried on the Hogue rubber grips. The fit was perfect, and these are quite a bit "fatter" than the original grips, but seem like they are going to very comfortable. (Especially when the 'hot' ammo from Double Tap get here - I hope Mike loaded mine with the right bullets!)

Oddly, it felt like I could get a higher grip with these than with the OEM grips, which I wouldn't think would be true, but it felt that way. Someday I'll have go back and forth to really check that.

Then I tried the Hogue checkered Rosewood grips. Wow, these looked great and felt awesome! The checkering is nice and crisp and it felt like I had a fantastic grip on the gun, even more secure than with the rubber grips.

They felt like they were the same size and shape as the rubber ones, quite 'hand filling'. But the weather in my kitchen wasn't sweaty hot and humid, nor was it freezing cold and wet, so time will tell what grip I leave on this hunting weapon, but I really, really like these checkered rosewood grips.

One possible issue, I had a problem with the screw holes in these wood grips not lining up exactly with the threaded mainspring holder that you have to use with the Hogue grips. I eventually got the screws to tighten to at least flush with the grips, but there is "side load" on the wood near the holes due to the misalignment and I don't like that. I hope it won't cause the grips to crack later, under the force of recoil.

Anyhow, that's all for tonight. I'll try to take them shooting tomorrow after work, and let you all know how it goes. I hope I can shoot at my preferred 'pit' I would hate to get the beautiful rosewood grips muddy!

Thanks for reading!

- Thomas

I suspect the short Delrin grips you got are for a 4516.
Those Rosewood grips look nice. I've never liked the Hogue rubber grips on a 10xx, if I wanted a fat pistol I'd have a Glock 20.

I don't know what model gun the curved grips are for, but it isn't yours. They are noticeably shorter than the stock ones in your picture.

I'm the opposite of Davek610. The stock grips are too thin and don't let me get as firm a grip as I like. The extra fatness of the Hogue's works better for my hand.

No one has mentioned the HandAll slip on rubberband grips with the finger indexes moulded in. I have a set that I have used with several of the grips. These can be shifted to add to the indexing of your grip because of the finger positions. Have a look see...

Thomas,

I had exactly the same problem. Did you order your grips directly from S&W or from a distributor? I ordered two from a major distributor and, like you, got the short ones which didn't fit even though they were marked with the correct S&W part number.

In any case, after the replies to my grip question on the other thread, I'm leaning very strongly towards ordering the Hogue grips, myself.

Please keep us posted!

Cheers!

I've run in to this problem while modifying the CT grips. CT, Big Dog and Hogue all use a plastic block with threaded inserts to support the mainspring cup and to secure the retention screws. Sometimes these blocks can have a bit of flash on them which misaligns them just a bit in one direction or another.

With a bright light, you should be able to see through the screw hole which direction you need to move them to line up the threads with the screw hole in the grip. Just a bit of light file work to knock off the flash or allow a bit of movement in the frame "fingers" might be all you need. Try moving the block with an awl.

Best,

John

To Hill_Country,

I think it is the grips that need modification, not the mainspring retainer, as the mainspring pin holes lined up perfectly. I think I see some material at the top of the wooden grips that is not on the rubber grips, that if I remove will allow the wooden grips to mount slightly higher, and the holes will therefore line up.

But thanks for the suggestion, I will "measure twice and cut once"!

Default Curved grip

The one they sent you is for the compact. It isn't going to fit your gun. Don't know where you bought it, but they shoud take it back and replace it. Make sure it is for 1006, AND 4506. The one you got is for the 4516. We have the camera packed for our trip tomorrow, or I would post a pic of my curved grip that I haven't installed yet. Am kind of enjoying the hogue one right now.

Well you've certainly got quite a selection to choose from. I give the best looking award to the checkered rosewoods, wow. Although, the standard rubber hogues might prove your favorite when you hit the pit.

You've got some great choices, but I'd make sure that the set that you choose is the one that works the best for you, even if it doesn't look the best. Let us know how it goes. Nice gun.
