S&W Model 41- Five Inch Barrel
I recently purchased an older S&W Model 41 with a five inch barrel. As you can see the sights on my gun differ from current Model 41s. I have been told it is all original, that it left the factory this way. The serial number is 70037. My SC of S&W isn't a lot of help, it only says it is pre 1970 vintage. If anyone can help by pinpointing the date of manufacture it would be appreciated. Feel free to post your 5 inch Model 41's here as well. Many thanks--

Probably 1965 but Jinks can verify ship date and which bbl was shipped. The 5" bbl came in ramp and patridge front sites. The 5" bbl came with several variations of sites and under bbl configs. Several pictures of bbl can help date range it.

PbRx - that is *very* nice. One of the best looking 41 mods I've ever seen.
I have an old 41 the needs a short barrel. I bought it new around 1968 or '69, and it just has the 7 3/8 without the muzzle brake. That went missing in the 70s, along with the box and kit.

PBRX - great looking bbl - when was it done and by whom? Seems I remember that someone has done some recently. Reminds me of some of the Loveless work.

Hi Tom,
It was done by a machinist/collector who frequents the RFC forum. I don't think he wants to have his name posted. Email me and I can forward it to him if you want. The refinishing job was done by Ford's in Florida. I wish I can find (and afford) a Lovelace.

PbRx,
Wow, your gun is a real looker. I know from memory my gun has front and rear sights exactly like yours. I will post a picture or two of mine in a few days.
Tom Beckwith,
Thanks for your help. I was estimating around 1965 vintage as well. The gun I bought is shooter grade, I don't think it would justify the expense of having it factory lettered.

The factory made a few 5" light barrels. I had one that I foolishly sold years ago. I've regretted it ever since. They can be duplicated by cutting a 7&3/8" and changing the sights but it is an expensive proposition. You can sometimes find these original barrels for sale but ,that too, is an expensive proposition.IIRC, Loveless, made some "field safetys" and some other ancillary parts that made this target gem into a premier field gun.Nick

You have what many 41 shooters call the 5" Skinny barrel.
My first 41, I was in the 9th grade, was the 5.5" Heavy barrel. I bought it for Bullseye pistol shooting.
Many years later, I wanted a 41 for field/small game hunting. I could not find a 5" Skinny barrel, so I bought the 7" version, it is a Skinny barrel too.
You have a very good Mod 41.
