Default S&W 422 Target What is it Worth?

I am looking at a Model 422 Target. It looks to be in great shape. The owner doesn't have the box, or paperwork. What would be a good price to offer for it?

Thanks!

There is no such thing. The 422 & 622 models were offered with fixed or adjustable sights. The 2206 was offered with fixed, adjustable, and a target version. The 2213 & 2214 models had fixed sights. There was also a 622 with a vent rib available one year.

A nice 422 with adjustable sights and wood stocks would bring $300.00+ in my area. I sold one for that a few months ago. I personally would not pay half that for one in need of refinishing.

I have owned nine of this series of pistols, still have six of them. Why S&W dropped them is beyond me.

I paid $225 for this one almost 2 years ago. It's a 1993 vintage and came with 1 12 round magazine, no box, and most of the paperwork, including the original buyer's sales receipt. He acually paid almost the same amount 17 years earlier. Condition was very gently used.

I love that it uses the same magazines as my model 41. Trigger is a little gritty and heavy, but it actually shoots quite accurately. Fun factor is very high!!

I think S&W made a mistake dropping this model.

These were prone to about a 4% FTF and FTE at some big shooting events.

I also paid $225 for my almost NIB 422 last year with all paperwork and a 2nd magazine. 6" adjustable sights and walnut grips (actual wood, not the plastic version). I probably got a little discount however as I bought a 2214 NIB at the same time...also for $225. I've found the 422 to be a lot more reliable than my 22A-1.

Just want to point out, according S&W manual, they do refer the adjustable version of 422 and 622 as "Target" version. It just not label on the box nor mark on the gun.

Congrats, the wood grip is getting difficult to find now. I just put my money down for a 2206 and will pick up some time around the end of next month.

On 3-15-89 I paid $169.11 out the door from Bass Pro in Springfield, Missouri. Don't know why, but it has only had maybe 200 rounds through it. Just sits in the safe and looks at me.

Last month I found a 422 , 4" barrel, adjustable sights, with the wood grips at a gun show. It was a private seller for $225.

I paid $199+tax about 5 years ago for a six-inch 422, fixed sights, but a previous owner had added the wooden grips. It has wear-marks, but I didn't care, I haven't seen too many 422s around here.

Love this pistol, my kids handle this one like pros.

Ditto the comments about a "Target" model...I'd thought that back in the late '80s / early '90s when the 422s / 622s were in their heyday, the adjustable sight / wood grip versions were considered "target-grade" and the fixed sight / plastic grip versions were considered "field-grade" models. This recollection may be coming from an article by Terry Murbach in the old "Handguns" magazine, where he compared several .22 handguns...that article inspired me toward my first 422 purchase in the 1990 timeframe.

Could someone please give me a current price for my used S&W 422 Target pistol? No box or paperwork but does have 3 10-round mags and 1 12-rounder. Thanks for any help!

Griz, as you probably know, there are several answers to your question. What I'd pay for a gun and what I'd sell it for are two different things. Since you said it was yours, I'd guess you're asking for the value for sale or trade.
You have nice condition, wood grips, adjustable sights, and the harder to find 4.5" barrel all to your advantage. Unfortunately for you no box, which takes most of the collectors out who would be willing to pay on the high end for those qualities.

I find these sell for more than book values I've seen, but that's all a LGS is going to pay. To an individual, if I could get 325, I'd probably let it go. Anything lower than 250, I probably would not consider it. Anything in between might depend on the deal.

Does that tell you what you were looking to know? Pretty gun BTW.

Just reread your post. Extra mags are worth about 30 bucks each, 12 rounders a little more.

Thanks for your reply! I am considering selling/trading it and getting an M&P22 to have a .22 more like my 9mm's. Sounds like with the extra mags I might be able to get ahold of a new one and have a few bucks to go towards some new sights.

I wish I would have found this site years ago. I'm actually looking for More Custom grips for my Smith & Wesson model 422. I presently have a Pair of Rosewood Thumb Rest Target Grips that I purchased in 1998. I Purchased my 422 with OEM Box, Papers, Cleaning Kit and Six 10-round magazines for $119.00 at B & B Gun Sales in North Hollywood, Ca. that Same Year. I AM a Smith & Wesson Fanatic and will NEVER have anything bad to say about S&W. As a matter of fact I had a Smith 645 in my Holster the day I Retired. Still looking for grips and anything you have to say.

Depending on where you live as the price can be higher in some area's like Canada. Here that 422 with those options would go for around $400.00 to $500.00 in that format. They are a real sweet shooting gun and you can not go wrong owning one at any time.

Average price for 422 in nice shape, adj sight & wood grips = $300. If
you get one for less you lucked out, if you pay much more, you overpaid.
Field model with fixed sights -$50. Exta mags & box will bring a little more
new mags still available at about $25@.

These are some of the most common wood grips(other than the factory wood), clockwise from top left:

Eagle Grips - Rosewood
Altamont - Laminate
Factory S&W - Target grips, still available(sorry, just a pic I had)
Factory S&W - Target grips
