Thing still jamming

Well I cleaned this gun (model 41) super good chamber with solvent and brush. I could take a live round and it would just drop right in the chamber. I could load a magazine and cycle the slide by hand and it would work great through the mag full. The slide feels pretty smooth and silky. I am shooting CCI sv. I shot about 15 rounds and then jam. I tried a live round in the chamber and it would only drop in about half way. If I let the slide close slow it would not put the round in the seated position. If I just let the slide go it would get it home. It seems as though the chamber just gets dirty quick and causes the stove pipe jams? I shouldn't have to clean the chamber that soon. If so this is not the gun for me. Like it or not. Any Ideas?

I Am guessing an M&P 22, If I am right it needs the High Velocity ammo if it is the m&p 15-22 definetly high velocity.

I believe the OP is referring to his Model 41.

This sounds like it might need a new stock-strength recoil spring. Failure to chamber the new round could be a weak spring.

Is there any aftermarket buffers in the pistol, from someone accomodating high-velocity .22 ammo ?

It is the Model 41 pistol and it is pre-owned but looks like it was hardly used. Far as I know everything is as it came from the factory. I cleaned it good and you can put a full magazine in the gun and by hand cycle the rounds right through without a problem. Looking inside the barrel it looks like the chamber end and where the barrel starts are somewhat misaligned. You can see more of an edge where the barrel starts on one side more than the other side. Hope that makes sense. Just seems to get the chamber dirty real fast. Maybe this don't mean anything but I thought I would bring it up.

How old is your 41 - SN will help determine. S&W had some periods of quality problems with bbls. Tough to photo, but may help. If you can try another bbl to see if results are same/similar.

You mention "misaligned"?
I believe there were various breach blocks manufactured for the model 41 to allow for slight misalignment. It's possible your barrel has been swapped the new barrel causing a misalignment issue?

Or it was never aligned correctly in the first place.

Cedarfluteman can you give us a date of your serial no's. This will help us determine possibly what is going wrong with your pistol. Even tho your gun looks new in the box it may have a well used spring in it which will cause these type of problems for you. I have had this issue myself. Also remember even CCI-SV can and will have the odd stovepipe as well but should not have very many. I had 3 last week myself with it in a 150 round shooting session. I have around 15000 rounds on this spring at the moment so I do not get too upset with this many. Pics will help a lot as well if you can also.

From what I can tell the gun is a 2007 model. I do have a factory slide return spring , extractor and extractor spring coming. Another thing I noticed it looks like the round feeding into the chamber scrapes across the round under it in the magazine leaving a scrape on the lead bullet. Don't know if that causes trouble or not , but I wish it didn't do it?

Could someone have dry fired? Get a mag glass & look close. Also try a small drop of oil on the first bullet. If it will run a full mag it should be easy to fix. Everyone I shoot with has had a 41. I bought a new one at Wally World in the early 70s for seems like $235 with a suppressor. Also try another magazine if you can.

I had one that made me crazy then someone smarter than I suggested that.

Having oil getting into the chamber and barrel seems like that would mess up the accuracy? Does it?

The oil should not affect accuracy to a noticeable extent anyway. Keep in mind that an excessive amount of oil in the chamber and firing could be an issue.
Feeding problem can be over come by using lubricated ammunition. The likes of RWS, Eley and others sell lubricated ammo that may resolve you problem. The ammo is coated with a waxy/grease type material, it is good but also messy to use.
I would try lubricated ammo if that doesn't work it could indicate an issue with the gun.

I would suggest trying a different magazine with this gun and see what happens. The drop of oil trick really is a good idea as well. You should not have any scrape marks on any of the bullets at all. Just might be a defective magazine even tho it enters the gun correctly.

I think when the gun cycles fast like when shooting it don't scrape the bullet. It is when you cycle it by hand is when it shows up.

I have been using CCI standard velocity and they have a good bit of wax on the bullets. Has been working much better since the temp has warmed up. I have been cleaning the gun real good. I think the slide spring will help. It seems to shoot the little higher powered rounds better, but maybe not as accurate. Do most 41 owners have different springs to tune the gun?

I purchased a 41 used and had a jamming problem with it. I got it for a decent price. Returned it to Smith, they charged me $100.00 for the repair but its worked great ever since. They didn't tell me what they did to repair it. So far it digests everything that I put thru it, and it was repaired several years ago. I had a 5 inch model before I bought the 7 inch gun and the 5 inch worked great too. Their are gunsmiths that specialize in this gun. You could check the computer. Turn around time might be better than Smith.

Jamming update. I changed the extractor and the extractor spring and the gun works perfect. I have shot probably a whole brick of cci sv and not one jam. The old extractor was a little high on the casing and the tip of it was angled a bit. The new one fit closer to where it was needed to be and the tip was nice and straight. The old extractor spring was about 1/8" shorter than the new one. Together it made the gun perform like it should. It went from being my least favorite gun to my favorite gun.
