Default Can a 2nd Gen. trigger get to 3rd Gen. greatness?

Howdy folks,

Not new to guns-but new to S&W autos, and a true convert to boot.

The 3rd. Gen. guns have great triggers-2nd Gen. guns are more than serviceable-but not as good.

I really like 3rd Gen. guns-adding more as funds allow-but I have really developed an affection for 2nd Gen guns.

Can the trigger of these 2nd Gen. guns get to 3rd Gen. standards? I realize they can be fixed up, but are there physical limitations to the design that limit how good they can be?

If spending a few bucks just makes them a little better, I'm more than leaving them as is. If a few bucks can make them feel like a 3rd Gen. trigger, I'll pony up some coin.

Best,

Heekma

Mechanically, there is not a whole lot of difference in the lock work parts of the 2nd & 3rd gen pistols, which makes them feeling different a head scratcher for me.

I have a 559 and when I compare it to my 4006, what I notice the most is the difference in the shape of the trigger (559 is wider and more angular) and the slimmer grip profile on the 4006.

It might be a case of the 3rd gens having lighter springs than the 2nd gen pistols.

The differences in actions between the 2nd & 3rd generation include machining differences in the frames and the various parts of the lockwork.

Some of the changes can be duplicated with handtools, like reaming the trigger return spring tunnel. Others......

In short, you can get real close, but without considerable work and parts replacement, you can't duplicate it. The Performance Center can probably come real close.

WR,

That's what I was wondering. It's not like putting lipstick on a pig by any means-the second gen. triggers are good as they are, but the third gen. triggers are uniformly better.

I'll keep 'em as is, shoot 'em, enjoy 'em and when I feel the need.for something better in terms of trigger pull I'll reach for a 3rd. Gen.

Best,

Heekma

Someone mentioned the performance center on the subject of improving triggers. I sent my 1066 to them for the 3rd gen auto pistol package which includes a tuned action. It didn't feel any different then before I sent it in. The refinish was great, but the action work? Don't think I'll do that again.

Well my 639 actually has a better trigger than most every 3rd gen I've owned or shot and that probably numbers in the vacinity of 2 dozen. I haven't handled many other 2nd gen guns so maybe mine has just had the **** shot out of it and is nicely broken in. The outside of it had lots of "character" but I assumed it had been carried a lot and shot a little. Who knows, but to answer your question I think the answer is yes, but it maybe a **** shoot on how good of parts/fitting the gun has.
